Yankees claimed RHP David Herndon off waivers from the Blue Jays.

Toronto had claimed Herndon off waivers from the Phillies, but he was removed from the 40-man roster to make room for Scott Maine. Herndon will remain sidelined until June as he recovers from Tommy John surgery. The 27-year-old right-hander owns a career 3.85 ERA and 1.48 WHIP over 117 career innings at the big league level.

Herndon only made five relief appearances with the Phillies this season before undergoing Tommy John surgery in June. However, the 27-year-old right-hander could be an option out of Toronto's bullpen at some point during the first half of next season. He owns a 3.85 ERA and 1.48 WHIP over 97 relief appearances in the majors.

David Herndon underwent Tommy John surgery on his right elbow Tuesday.

Rumors surfaced earlier in the day that he may need the operation, but apparently he's already gone under the knife. Herndon will be sidelined until around midseason next year.

According to MLB.com's Todd Zolecki, David Herndon "could be on his way toward Tommy John surgery."

Herndon has been out of commission since late April with a strained muscle in his pitching elbow. It's not getting any better through rest and rehab, and the right-hander may have no other choice but to go under the knife. Tommy John reconstructive surgery would keep him sidelined through most of the 2013 season.

David Herndon (elbow) will visit with Phillies team physician Michael Ciccotti next week.

Herndon's recovery from a flexor pronator strain in his right elbow has gone slower than expected. We should have a better idea what his status is following the visit.

Phillies placed RHP David Herndon on the 15-day disabled list with a flexor pronator strain in his right elbow.

He'll be shut down for three weeks but is not a candidate for surgery right now. Herndon gave up two runs in two innings during his most recent appearance Sunday and owns a 4.70 ERA and 8/1 K/BB ratio over 7 2/3 innings this season. The Phillies will make a corresponding roster move Tuesday.

David Herndon pitched three scoreless innings of relief on Thursday to earn his first victory of the year.

Following a two-hour and 20-minute rain delay, Herndon allowed only one hit while striking out four, matching starter Vance Worley's earlier dominance. He now owns a solid 3.79 ERA and 1.21 WHIP.

He was sent out to make room for Jose Contreras on the active roster. Herndon, 25, has a 6.32 ERA over 14 appearances with the Phillies this season and pitched 2 1/3 innings in Wednesday's marathon against the Reds.

With Joe Blanton (elbow) headed back to the disabled list, Herndon will take his place on the Phillies' 25-man roster. In 10 2/3 innings over 11 appearances earlier this season, Herndon was awful, posting a 9.28 ERA and 1.97 WHIP. His use will be limited.

He was cleared to make room for the newly-activated J.C. Romero on the active roster. Herndon has really struggled so far this season, posting a 9.28 ERA and 3/7 K/BB ratio over 10 2/3 innings.

Phillies selected RHP David Herndon from the Angels with the 22nd pick in the Rule 5 Draft.

Herndon, 24, was drafted in the fifth round by the Angels in 2006. The big right-hander was 5-6 with a 3.03 ERA and 11 saves in 50 appearances last season with Double-A Arkansas. He's known as a control pitcher, averaging just 1.4 BB/9 in 132 professional appearances. Still, he's a longshot to stick with the big club in 2010.
