Marte was sporting a 2.78 ERA and 23/9 K/BB ratio in 22 2/3 innings at the Triple-A level. The right-hander will function as a middle reliever for the Cardinals.

He was sent down to make room for Brian Fuentes on the active roster. Marte, 31, has a 4.46 ERA and 33/13 K/BB ratio over 38 1/3 innings this season. He figures to return to the major league level later this summer.

Cardinals purchased the contract of RHP Victor Marte from Triple-A Memphis.

He'll take the spot of Scott Linebrink (shoulder). Marte pitched well at Triple-A last year for the Cards, posting a 1.44 ERA over 55 appearances, and he allowed just one run over 10 innings this spring. He's 31, though, and holds a career 9.30 ERA and 26/27 K/BB ratio over 39 2/3 big league innings. Needless to say, we're not expecting much.

Cardinals acquired RHP Victor Marte from the Royals for future considerations.

Marte has an awful 9.30 ERA over 30 major league relief appearances, but he'll at least provide some depth at the Triple-A level. The 30-year-old right-hander managed a more respectable 3.32 ERA and 29/15 K/BB ratio over 40 2/3 innings with Triple-A Omaha last season.

Marte was designated for assignment last week. He's posted a 9.30 ERA and 1.97 WHIP over the last two seasons for the Royals. The 30-year-old simply isn't a major league quality reliever.

Marte managed to last about two and a half months with the Royals last season despite posting a 9.76 ERA and 1.92 WHIP over 27 2/3 innings. The 30-year-old will have to settle for a minor league deal somewhere.

Royals optioned RHP Victor Marte to Triple-A Omaha.

It's absolutely incredible that Marte has managed to stick around this long. He has allowed a grand total of 24 runs in 9 1/3 innings over 10 relief appearances this month, resulting in an obscene 23.14 ERA. He has an ever-so-slightly less awful 9.76 ERA over 22 total relief appearances this season.

Marte will replace the injured Gil Meche, though not in the rotation. Bruce Chen has been tapped to take Meche's next turn with Marte joining the Royals bullpen. Marte was 3-1 with a 3.46 ERA and a 1.31 WHIP at Triple-A Omaha.

Well, that didn't last long. Marte was called up on Thursday and allowed one run over 2 1/3 innings against the Rays. He was cleared in order to make room for Chris Getz's return from the disabled list.

Marte posted an 8.25 ERA and 2.08 WHIP in eight relief appearances as a September call-up last season. The 29-year-old right-hander managed a 2.13 ERA with Triple-A Omaha in '09 and posted a 3.48 ERA over his first six appearances before Thursday's promotion.

Royals re-signed RHP Victor Marte to a minor league contract.

Marte was called up to the big leagues in September of last season and posted an ugly 8.25 ERA and 2.08 WHIP in 12 innings of relief. The 29-year-old righty had a 2.13 ERA and a 53/25 K/BB ratio in 42 1/3 frames during his time at Triple-A Omaha, though, and could find his way back to the majors this season.

Marte signed with the Royals last December after spending the previous three seasons in Japan. The 28-year-old right-hander had a 2.24 ERA, 1.17 WHIP in 39 games between Double-A Northwest Arkansas and Triple-A Omaha this season.
