Severino had been designated for assignment in order to clear a spot on the 40-man roster for Cesar Izturis. He'll return to a 2.72 ERA over 40 games at Syracuse this season.

Nationals designated LHP Atahualpa Severino for assignment.

The 27-year-old southpaw was booted from the 40-man roster to make space for newly-acquired shortstop Caesar Izturis. An amateur free agent originally signed by the Expos who remained in the organization after the move to D.C., Severino could very well clear waivers. He's posted a 2.91 ERA over seven seasons in the minors and is left-handed, however, so it also isn't out of the realm of possibility that another franchise could put in a claim.

Severino allowed two runs over 5 1/3 innings this spring while striking out four and walking a pair. The 27-year-old southpaw appeared in six games with the Nats last season and will continue to serve as relief depth in the minors.

Severino, 25, had a 3.55 ERA and a 35/22 K/BB ratio in 50 2/3 innings out of the pen for Syracuse. Lefties were hitting .288 off him, compared to .205 for right-handers, so he's definitely not going to be a specialist for the Nats.
