Red Sox re-signed RHP Anthony Varvaro to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.

Varvaro logged just 11 innings with the Red Sox this past season prior to undergoing Tommy John surgery in May. He'll likely be sidelined until around the All-Star break next year.

Anthony Varvaro has elected free agency.

Varvaro was sidelined by elbow woes in late May, ultimately undergoing Tommy John surgery. Prior to the injury, he appeared in nine games with the Red Sox, allowing five runs on 14 hits over 11 innings. The 31-year-old right-hander likely won't be ready to pitch until some time during the summer of 2016.

Red Sox transferred RHP Anthony Varvaro from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day disabled list.

Varvaro underwent season-ending elbow surgery on Tuesday. The right-hander posted an impressive 2.63 ERA, 1.079 WHIP, and 50/13 K/BB ratio in 54 2/3 innings last year for the Braves, but he had a mess of a 2015 campaign.

Red Sox placed RHP Anthony Varvaro on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to April 29, with a torn right flexor tendon.

This is an interesting one. Varvaro was claimed off waivers by the Cubs early this month after the Red Sox designated him for assignment. Chicago eventually removed him from their 40-man roster, as well, but he's now back in Boston because it's been discovered he suffered the elbow injury while with the Red Sox. Varvaro isn't expected to return this season, but at least he'll draw a major league paycheck now.

Cubs sent RHP Anthony Varvaro outright to Triple-A Iowa.

He made it through waivers unclaimed this time after being designated for assignment twice within a couple weeks. Varvaro will provide relief depth in the minors for the Cubbies.

Cubs designated RHP Anthony Varvaro for assignment.

It's the second time in the last week that Varvaro, who never made an appearance with the Cubs, has been designated for assignment. He could pass through waivers this time.

Cubs recalled RHP Anthony Varvaro from Triple-A Iowa.

Varvaro was claimed off waivers from the Red Sox over the weekend and could be an asset for the Cubs in middle relief. The 30-year-old righty had a career ERA below 3.00 before his rough first month with Boston.

Cubs claimed RHP Anthony Varvaro off waivers from the Red Sox.

Varvaro had a rough month for the Red Sox, but his sub-3.00 ERA for his career entering the season pretty much assured him of not passing through waivers unclaimed. He'll report to Triple-A Iowa for now but should get a shot with the big club before long.

Red Sox designated RHP Anthony Varvaro for assignment.

Varvaro lost his roster spot after allowing four runs over his last three relief appearances. He had a sub-3.00 ERA for his career entering the season and could draw some interest on waivers.

Red Sox acquired RHP Anthony Varvaro from the Braves for RHP Aaron Kurcz and cash considerations.

Varvaro was designated for assignment by the Braves several days ago. He's been a solid bullpen contributor, posting a 2.99 ERA over 153 appearances in the last four seasons. In 2014, he put up a 2.63 ERA. He should serve as a quality arm and supply the Red Sox with a nice depth piece.

Braves designated RHP Anthony Varvaro for assignment.

It's a surprise move given Varvaro's 2.99 ERA over 153 relief appearances for the Braves over the last four seasons, including a 2.63 mark last year. The right-hander will either be claimed off waivers or traded.

MLB.com's Mark Bowman reports that the Braves plan to designate Anthony Varvaro for assignment when their deal with Alberto Callaspo becomes official.

Varvaro, 30, holds a 2.99 ERA over 153 relief appearances for the Braves over the last four seasons, so he figures to draw some interest on waivers. He posted a 2.63 mark with 50 strikeouts over 54 2/3 frames last season.

Braves activated RHP Anthony Varvaro from the paternity leave list.

Gus Schlosser has been sent down in a corresponding move. Varvaro has been excellent for the Braves this season, posting a 2.29 ERA and 39/9 K/BB ratio over 39 1/3 innings.
