Nationals purchased the contract of LHP Fernando Abad from Triple-A Syracuse.
Abad, 27, had a 1.06 ERA and 12/2 K/BB ratio in 17 innings over 17 appearances in Triple-A. The Nationals are lacking a true left-handed specialist, so there's a chance that he could stick around. However, Abad owns a 5.10 ERA in 88 appearances in the majors. May 21 - 8:51 AM

Fernando Abad has elected free agency.

He'll look around for a new job rather than accept a minor league assignment. Abad posted a 5.06 ERA over 46 innings for the Astros this season while splitting time between the bullpen and the rotation.

Fernando Abad (oblique) faced two batters, retiring one, Wednesday in the Astros' season finale.

Abad hadn't pitched since leaving his start on September 24 with a strained right oblique muscle. The 26-year-old finishes the season with a 5.09 ERA and 1.65 WHIP.

Fernando Abad left Monday's start with a strained right oblique.

Abad suffered the injury in the second inning. Oblique injuries can be pretty tricky, so it's very possible he'll be shut down for the rest of the season.

Fernando Abad left Monday's start in the second inning with an undisclosed injury.

Abad threw a pitch to Daniel Descalso with two outs and one on in the inning before the Astros' trainer came to the mound and eventually led the lefty to the clubhouse. The team should update his status soon.

Fernando Abad was blasted for five runs -- four earned -- on six hits and three walks over just four innings in Wednesday's loss to the Pirates.

He needed 87 pitches to get through the four frames. It's fair to say the Astros' experiment with Abad in the rotation hasn't worked, as he's been drilled for 11 earned runs over just 12 1/3 frames in his first three starts. Assuming he's still in the rotation, he'll face the Cubs next week.

Fernando Abad was destroyed in Friday's loss to the Reds, surrendering six runs on nine hits over 4 1/3 innings.

He walked two and struck out only one in the poor performance. Zack Cozart got the Reds on the board with a two-run homer in the third inning, then they broke it open with a four-run fifth inning, highlighted by a three-run blast off the bat of Jay Bruce. He'll look to improve upon his 0-2 record and 4.83 ERA in his next outing against the Pirates in Pittsburgh on Wednesday.

Abad will make his first major league start Saturday against the Mets. The 26-year-old was recently moved to the starting rotation in Triple-A, where he's posting a 4.50 ERA and 9/3 K/BB in 14 innings (three starts). Abad has appeared in 81 games out of the bullpen, including 30 this season.

The Astros will recall left-hander Fernando Abad from Triple-A Oklahoma City to start Saturday against the Mets.

Abad has never pitched as a starter in the majors, but the rebuilding Astros have plenty of reason to experiment. The 26-year-old southpaw was recently moved into the rotation in Triple-A, posting a 4.50 ERA and 9/3 K/BB in 14 innings over three starts. He shouldn't be trusted in fantasy leagues, even against a struggling Mets squad.
