Red Sox president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski indicated Tuesday that the club will tender a contract to reliever Fernando Abad.
Abad struggled to the tune of a 6.39 ERA over 18 appearances after being acquired from the Twins in August and was left off the postseason roster. However, he's only projected to make around $2 million in his final year of arbitration eligibility, so the Red Sox will take their chances on bringing him back. The 30-year-old had a 2.65 ERA and 29/14 K/BB ratio over 34 innings prior to the trade. Nov 9 - 11:47 AM

Red Sox acquired LHP Fernando Abad from the Twins for RHP Pat Light.

Abad will presumably join the Boston bullpen on Tuesday, unless he can make it to Seattle before Monday night's series opener. The left-hander has registered a 2.65 ERA in 34 innings this season while holding left-handed hitters to a .163/.192/.265 batting line. It's a nice quiet addition for the Red Sox.

Fernando Abad has been traded to the Red Sox, according to Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports.

It's a nice low-key addition for the Boston bullpen. Abad, 30, has registered a 2.65 ERA, 1.21 WHIP, and 29/14 K/BB ratio in 34 innings this season for the Twins and he's been especially lethal against left-handed batters. He'll be eligible for arbitration this winter. Pat Light, a 25-year-old right-handed reliever, will head to Minnesota in return.

In his 288th major league appearance, Fernando Abad notched his first save by retiring all four Phillies he faced on Wednesday.

The Twins mentioned that Abad could see some save chances after Kevin Jepsen was pulled from the role. Brandon Kintzler still looks like the favorite for saves at the moment, but Abad, who might serve as the team's All-Star this year, could pick up the odd opportunity.

Twins activated LHP Fernando Abad from the bereavement list.

Abad has been away from the team since Saturday. The southpaw has tossed 4 1/3 scoreless innings so far this season to go along with a 4/2 K/BB ratio.
Apr 19 - 8:30 AM

Twins placed LHP Fernando Abad on the bereavement list.

Abad will be away from the team for a day or two. The 30-year-old southpaw has been terrific this season, hurling 4 1/3 scoreless innings while posting a 4/2 K/BB ratio. Ryan O'Rourke was recalled from Triple-A to replace him in the Twins bullpen for the time being.
Apr 16 - 11:00 AM

Twins selected the contract of LHP Fernando Abad from Triple-A Rochester.

The Twins' Opening Day roster is now set. Abad earned the last bullpen spot by recording a 2.61 ERA over 10 appearances this spring. He'll be used in mid relief, probably as a lefty specialist.
Apr 2 - 6:41 PM

Twins signed LHP Fernando Abad to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.

Abad struggled to the tune of a 4.15 ERA over 47 2/3 innings with the A's in 2015, but the left-hander had a tremendous year with Oakland in 2014. It's a worthwhile gamble for the Twins, who entered the offseason in need of a couple bullpen upgrades. Abad, 30, should be able to land an Opening Day roster spot in Minnesota if he pitches halfway decently in the Grapefruit League next spring.

Fernando Abad has elected free agency.

He refused an outright assignment after being removed from the Athletics' 40-man roster. Abad holds a 2.90 ERA, 1.16 WHIP and 128/44 K/BB ratio over 142 2/3 relief innings across the last three seasons, so there will be interest in him.

Athletics sent LHP Fernando Abad outright to Triple-A Nashville.

It's a minor surprise that he cleared waivers, but apparently no one wanted to pay his roughly $1.5 million arbitration figure. Abad holds a 2.90 ERA, 1.16 WHIP and 128/44 K/BB ratio over 142 2/3 relief innings across the last three seasons, so the A's will gladly keep him around for depth.

Athletics designated LHP Fernando Abad for assignment.

Abad pitched well enough in relief for the A's during the 2015 campaign, holding a 4.15 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 45/19 K/BB ratio across 47 2/3 innings. The 29-year-old southpaw has had enough major league success that he should latch on elsewhere in a middle relief capacity.

Fernando Abad (back) said that he feels OK after falling off an exercise ball last week.

Just a minor injury and apparently Abad is fine. Be wary of exercise balls.

Athletics and LHP Fernando Abad avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $1.0875 million contract.

It's a nice raise for the 29-year-old hurler who will more than double his salary from a season ago. He's coming off a fantastic 2014 campaign where he compiled a 1.57 ERA, 0.86 WHIP and 51/15 K/BB ratio over 57 1/3 innings.

Fernando Abad requested $1.225 million and was offered $850,000 from the Athletics when arbitration figures were exchanged.

The 29-year-old southpaw did a terrific job out of the A's bullpen in 2014, compiling a 1.57 ERA, 0.86 WHIP and 51/15 K/BB ratio over 57 1/3 inning. MLBTradeRumors.com projects Abad to earn $900,000, which is very close to the A's offer and would still represent a nice upgrade over his $525,900 from a season ago.

Fernando Abad was ejected from Sunday's game against the Orioles for allegedly throwing at Manny Machado.

With the A's holding a 10-0 lead in the eighth inning, and Manny Machado trying to instigate trouble since the first game of the series, it doesn't take a leap of faith to believe that Abad was indeed throwing at Machado. Both benches wound up clearing after the incident, though no further trouble came from it.
