Date:

Ryan Rowland-Smith is scheduled to throw for major league teams on Wednesday in Peoria, Arizona.

Rowland-Smith is hoping to get invited to a major league camp. The 30-year-old left-hander hasn't pitched in the bigs since 2010, when he posted an ugly 6.75 ERA and 1.69 WHIP in 109 1/3 innings with the Mariners.

Cubs signed LHP Ryan Rowland-Smith to a minor league contract.

The 29-year-old left-hander failed to reach the major leagues last year with Houston and had a brutal 6.75 ERA in 109 1/3 innings with the Mariners in 2010. He will function as organizational relief depth for the Cubs.

Astros re-signed LHP Ryan Rowland-Smith to a minor league contract.

Rowland-Smith was designated for assignment by Houston at the end of spring training and elected free agency, but he drew little interest and is now back with the organization. He'll try to climb his way out of Triple-A.

Astros designated LHP Ryan Rowland-Smith for assignment.

Rowland-Smith entered spring training in the mix for a rotation spot, but posted a lousy 6.23 ERA and 5/7 K/BB ratio over 13 innings during exhibition play. The Aussie will try to latch on elsewhere.

The Astros will designate left-hander Ryan Rowland-Smith for assignment on Thursday.

Rowland-Smith posted a 6.23 ERA in 13 innings this spring, failing to secure a spot in the Astros' starting rotation or bullpen. He'll look for a shot somewhere else.

Ryan Rowland-Smith shook off a first-inning homer to hold the Tigers to one run over three innings on Sunday.

Magglio Ordonez took him deep in the first, but Rowland-Smith was otherwise solid. He's battling Nelson Figueroa and Jordan Lyles for one spot in Houston's rotation. Two would make it if Wandy Rodriguez needs to go on the DL.

Ryan Rowland-Smith yielded two runs over three innings Wednesday against the Mets.

Rowland-Smith walked three and struck out one. The only hit he allowed was a two-run homer to Josh Thole in the second inning. The Aussie is currently competing for the fifth spot in the starting rotation, though Nelson Figueroa and Jordan Lyles have looked better so far.

Ryan Rowland-Smith gave up three runs and four hits in two innings Friday in a loss to the Cardinals.

Nelson Figueroa pitched well yesterday and Jordan Lyles looked good in his spring debut, so Rowland-Smith might be pitching himself into a hole early. He wasn't impressive at all facing a lineup minus Albert Pujols and Matt Holliday. Three of the four hits he gave up were to left-handed batters (and the other was to Gerald Laird, who might want to try hitting left-handed). He also walked lefty Skip Schumaker, a career .206 hitter against southpaws.

Astros signed LHP Ryan Rowland-Smith to a one-year, $725,000 contract.

He'll have an opportunity to earn more through incentives. Rowland-Smith was terrible with the Mariners this past season (6.75 ERA and 49/44 K/BB ratio over 109 innings), but he pitched relatively well the previous three year. He'll have a shot to earn a spot at the back of the Astros rotation.

According to Zachary Levine of the Houston Chronicle, the Astros have signed Ryan Rowland-Smith.

It's reportedly a one-year deal. Rowland-Smith, who turns 28 in January, posted an awful 6.75 ERA and 49/44 K/BB ratio over 109 innings with the Mariners this past season. He'll likely battle for a rotation spot during spring training.

According to Brian McTaggart of MLB.com, the Astros are interested in Ryan Rowland-Smith.

Rowland-Smith was non-tended by the Mariners last week after posting a lousy 6.75 ERA and 49/44 K/BB ratio over 109 innings this past season. He'd probably benefit by switching to the National League, but don't forget that he would also be leaving a pitcher-friendly environment behind.

Mariners non-tendered LHP Ryan Rowland-Smith.

The Australia-born lefty turned in a miserable 6.75 ERA and 1.69 WHIP over 109 1/3 innings for the Mariners this year. He wouldn't have commanded a salary of more than $1.2 million, but the M's couldn't justify paying him even that given his lack of recent success. He's now a free agent.

Ryan Rowland-Smith will start the season finale Sunday against the Athletics.

He'll take the place of Felix Hernandez. Rowland-Smith has been limited to bullpen duties since returning from a lower back strain in early September. The Aussie has a bloated 6.90 ERA in 26 appearances (19 starts) this season and should be avoided in all formats.
Fri, Oct 1, 2010 07:48:00 PM

Mariners activated LHP Ryan Rowland-Smith from the 15-day disabled list.

Rowland-Smith was pretty awful during his extended rehab assignment from a lower back strain, but allowed just one run over seven innings for Triple-A Tacoma on Thursday night. He'll pitch out of the bullpen for now, though Mariners interim manager Daren Brown hasn't dismissed the idea that he could be used as a starter eventually.
