Alex Wilson yielded three earned runs over 2 2/3 innings Sunday in a Grapefruit League start against the Nationals.

Wilson also struggled in his Grapefruit League debut last Tuesday and is sitting on a 20.25 ERA through four official innings this spring. He did pitch well in an exhibition versus Florida Southern on February 22. The 31-year-old right-hander is attempting to make his case for a move from the bullpen to the rotation this spring in Tigers camp. He's not doing a great job of it so far.
Mar 4 - 2:18 PM

Alex Wilson was lit up for six runs in 1 1/3 innings by the Phillies on Tuesday.

Rhys Hoskins and Roman Quinn hit homers off him. Wilson, auditioning for a spot in Detroit's rotation, struck out five in two perfect innings against a college team (Florida Southern) his first time out. Of course, that doesn't count in the official spring stats, so Wilson is now sporting a 40.50 ERA.
Feb 27 - 5:31 PM

Alex Wilson struck out five of six batters in two perfect innings Thursday as the Tigers beat Florida Southern 6-1.

In all, Tigers pitchers struck out 18 batters today, allowing just one hit to the Mocs. The 31-year-old Wilson has started only one game in 231 major league appearances and hasn't regularly started games since he was in Double-A in 2011, but the Tigers have nothing to lose by giving him a chance at the rotation this spring.
Feb 22 - 4:23 PM

Alex Wilson will start the Tigers' exhibition opener against Florida Southern College on Thursday.

Wilson will throw no more than two innings in the game. The 31-year-old right-hander is attempting to win a spot in the Detroit rotation after spending virtually all of his career coming out of the bullpen for the Red Sox and Tigers. As is the case with all starters, he'll be stretched out more and more as the spring rolls along.

Alex Wilson will be given a chance to claim a spot in the Tigers' starting rotation this spring.

Wilson asked for the opportunity and the rebuilding Tigers granted his request. The 31-year-old right-hander has made just one career start at the major league level (and 230 career relief appearances), but he possesses a four-pitch arsenal and might be able to pull off the transition. His low strikeout rate will probably keep him irrelevant in most fantasy leagues no matter how this shakes out.

Tigers and RHP Alex Wilson avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $1.925 million contract.

Wilson was eligible for arbitration for the second time this offseason. He posted a 4.50 ERA across 66 relief appearances in 2017.
Jan 12 - 1:43 PM

Alex Wilson (leg) expects to be ready for the start of spring training next February.

Wilson suffered a non-displaced fibula fracture in his right leg Saturday when he got struck by a Joe Mauer line drive. He'll be in a cast for 4-6 weeks and will need about three full months of rest and rehab. The 30-year-old setup man is arbitration-eligible for the second time this winter after earning $1.18 million in 2017.

Alex Wilson has been diagnosed with a broken right leg.

In more technical terms, it's a non-displaced fibula fracture. Wilson suffered the injury Saturday when he got struck by a 103.8 mph line drive off the bat of Joe Mauer in the top of the eighth inning. The setup man is obviously done for the year and this injury will have at least some effect on his offseason regimen.

Alex Wilson was removed from a relief appearance Saturday versus the Twins after taking a Joe Mauer line drive off his lower right leg.

Mauer smoked one 103.8 mph off the bat in the top of the eighth inning, striking Wilson around the shin. He needed help getting off the field and into the home clubhouse at Comerica Park. X-rays are likely forthcoming.

Alex Wilson was charged with four runs in an inning and took a blown save and the loss Tuesday against the A's.

Wilson was a valuable 70-inning reliever in both 2015 and 2016, but with righties hitting him surprisingly hard, he's sporting a 4.42 ERA in 59 innings this year. He could be in jeopardy of being non-tendered this winter.

Alex Wilson will begin serving his suspension resulting from last week's brawl with the Yankees on Saturday.

Wilson has had his ban lowered from four games to three on appeal. He received the suspension for admitting that he intentionally threw at Todd Frazier after both benches had been already been warned.

Major League Baseball has suspended Alex Wilson four games for his involvement in Thursday's brawl with the Yankees.

Wilson admitted after the game that he intentionally threw a pitch at Todd Frazier after warnings were issued, so his suspension comes as no surprise. Still, he will appeal and try to get it reduced. Tigers manager Brad Ausmus was given a one-game suspension, as well, as a result of Wilson's actions.

Alex Wilson was ejected Thursday against the Yankees for hitting Todd Frazier in the eighth inning.

Tigers manager Brad Ausmus was also tossed. New York and Detroit have spent much of the afternoon exchanging bean balls, resulting in several bench-clearing incidents and countless ejections. Wilson worked a scoreless inning before hitting the showers.

With Justin Wilson needing the day off, Alex Wilson pitched a scoreless ninth inning for his second save Thursday against the Orioles.

Shane Greene got five outs to set him up. Both right-handers have ERAs in the mid-1.00s, so the Tigers have alternatives if they want to put Wilson back into a setup role at some point.
