Tigers released INF Gustavo Nunez.
The 25-year-old couldn't hack his way out of a rose garden this year, batting .194 with four RBIs in 61 games at Triple-A Toledo. Nunez's calling card, of course, is his glove, which some consider to be the best in Detroit's organization. Nunez spent the 2012 season on the disabled list with the Pirates, who plucked him in the Rule 5 draft. He was returned to Detroit last winter, but is now free to sign with any team. Don't be surprised if he surfaces on a big league bench next season as glove-first, -second and -third utility player. Tue, Nov 5, 2013 03:36:00 PM

INF Gustavo Nunez has been returned to the Tigers.

Nunez was a Rule 5 pick of the Pirates last offseason but missed all of the year while recovering from right ankle surgery. He was then claimed off waivers by the D'Backs in October, but they've opted not to keep him around. The 24-year-old will return to the minors for the Tigers.

Diamondbacks claimed INF Gustavo Nunez off waivers from the Pirates.

Nunez was a Rule 5 pick of the Pirates this season but missed all of the year while recovering from right ankle surgery. The same Rule 5 rules apply for him in Arizona. He should be fine for the start of spring training.

Gustavo Nunez (ankle) began a rehab assignment with the Pirates' Gulf Coast League team Monday.

A Rule 5 pick, Nunez has been out all season while recovering from right ankle surgery. "We're just happy to finally get him on the field," Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said. Nunez must be on the Pirates' active roster for 90 days in order to be kept, though that number can carry over to next season.

Pirates placed SS Gustavo Nunez on the 60-day disabled list with a right ankle injury.

The move clears a spot on the Pirates' 40-man roster for new starter A.J. Burnett. Nunez, a Rule 5 Draft selection back in December, will miss the start of the season.

Pirates selected SS Gustavo Nunez from the Tigers in the Rule 5 draft.

Nunez is very good with the glove, but it's a stretch to think he'll ever be of much use with the bat. The 23-year-old batted just .276/.333/.386 with five homers, 26 RBI and 18 steals (while being caught 13 times) between High- and Double-A in 2011. The Bucs will try to keep him around as a utility infielder.
