Surkamp is working his way back from Tommy John surgery, which is a shame because he'd probably be in the rotation following Ryan Vogelsong's (hand) injury. As it is, Vogelsong will likely be ready before him.

Eric Surkamp underwent season-ending Tommy John surgery Wednesday.

Surkamp was originally placed on the disabled list during spring training with what was termed as a flexor tendon strain in his throwing elbow. The 25-year-old southpaw attempted to ramp up his throwing program, but the discomfort persisted. He'll now be sidelined until the second half of 2013.

This was done to make room for Brad Penny on the 40-man roster. Surkamp is currently shut down after suffering a flexor tendon strain in his throwing elbow at the end of spring training. He's been slow to make progress and his ability to return this season is still uncertain.

Surkamp suffered a flexor tendon strain in his throwing elbow at the end of spring training, then a setback in mid-May. The left-hander is looking doubtful to return before the All-Star break, and you'd have to think surgery will soon become a serious consideration.

Eric Surkamp has experienced a setback in his recovery from a strained left elbow tendon.

When asked Thursday whether Surkamp might need surgery Giants manager Bruce Bochy replied simply: "Obviously there's concern." The 24-year-old left-hander has been out of commission since the end of spring training and might not return this season.

It's good news, but it will likely still be at least 10-14 days before he can throw from a mound. The young left-hander will be part of Triple-A Fresno's rotation once he gets healthy but will be on call as the Giants' "sixth starter."
