Pirates signed C Sebastian Valle to a minor league contract.

The 24-year-old backstop heads across the state after spending his first eight minor league seasons in the Phillies organization. Better regarded for his defensive prowess than his offensive skillset, Valle slashed just .238/.262/.346 with five homers and 32 RBI in 75 games between Double-A Reading and Triple-A Lehigh Valley in 2014.

Phillies sent C Sebastian Valle outright to Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

Valle was designated for assignment Wednesday but has cleared waivers and will remain in the organization. The 23-year-old hasn't progressed with the bat as hoped, but the Phillies will be happy to keep him around.

Phillies designated C Sebastian Valle for assignment.

The 23-year-old's bat hasn't yet acclimated to the high minors, but it wouldn't be a shock if Philadelphia some day regrets letting Valle walk for free. The Mexican catcher was considered the team's best position player prospect just two years ago. Valle has been swinging a decent stick in the Mexican League this winter and has experimented with playing the outfield. Because catching is so sparse around the league, there's a chance another franchise could take a shot on him through the waivers process.

Phillies prospect catcher Sebastian Valle suffered a small fracture on his right ring finger.

The injury didn't stop Valle from participating in drills Tuesday, so it doesn't sound like a major concern. The 22-year-old batted .253/.271/.428 with 17 home runs and a .699 OPS between Double- and Triple-A last season and was ranked as the organization's No. 14 prospect by Baseball America over the winter.

Phillies recalled C Sebastian Valle from Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

Valle batted just .253/.271/.428 but slugged 17 homers between Double- and Triple-A this season. The Phillies are high on the 22-year-old's future.

Phillies optioned C Sebastian Valle to Double-A Reading.

Valle is a nice prospect but is coming off an injury-shortened 2011 season, appearing in just 91 games while batting .284/.312/.394 with five homers for High-A Clearwater. He needs at least another full year in the minors.

Phillies purchased the contract of C Sebastian Valle from High-A Clearwater.

It's a move made in order to protect him from the Rule 5 draft. The team's best position player prospect, Valle had an injury-plagued 2011 season, appearing in just 91 games while batting .284/.312/.394 with five homers for Clearwater. He probably would have made it up to Double-A if not for injuries and could conceivably make it up to Triple-A this season.
