Chase d'Arnaud left Wednesday's game against the Red Sox after taking a line drive off his cheek.

D'Arnaud, playing center field for some reason, dived for a liner and caught it -- with his right cheekbone. He'll have a black eye at the very least, and the Pirates will likely order an X-ray in the coming days to make sure nothing is broken.

Pirates sent INF Chase d'Arnaud outright to Triple-A Indianapolis.

The veteran infielder had been designated for assignment last week to clear a spot on the roster for Brent Morel. He cleared waivers and will continue to function as organizational depth for the Pirates.
Mar 1 - 2:47 PM

Pirates designated INF Chase d'Arnaud for assignment.

The move clears a spot for the newly-claimed Brent Morel on the active roster. D'Arnaud, 27, hit .233/.288/.350 with four home runs, 20 RBI, and 17 stolen bases in 61 games at the Triple-A level last year after returning from thumb surgery.

Pirates activated INF Chase d'Arnaud from the 60-day disabled list, optioned him to Triple-A Indianapolis.

D'Arnaud is recovered from March thumb surgery but will have to work his way up through the minors. He has an ugly .208/.232/.275 batting line during his time with the Pirates.

Chase d'Arnaud (thumb) will move his rehab assignment Saturday to Triple-A Indianapolis.

D'Arnaud has been out all season after undergoing surgery in March to repair a partially torn ligament in his thumb. The Pirates are expected to send him to the minors when he's healthy enough to return.

Chase d'Arnaud (thumb) began a rehab assignment with High-A Bradenton on Thursday.

d'Arnaud has been sidelined since undergoing left thumb surgery late in spring training. He figures to need a few weeks' worth of rehab at-bats but could be optioned to Triple-A after that.

Pirates placed INF Chase d'Arnaud on the 60-day disabled list with a thumb injury.

Pirates recalled INF Chase d'Arnaud from Triple-A Indianapolis.

Pirates optioned INF Chase d'Arnaud to Triple-A Indianapolis.

The 25-year-old infielder had three hits in 10 at-bats this spring. He batted just .217/.242/.287 with six RBI, 12 stolen bases and a .528 OPS over 151 plate appearances at the big league level last season. He'd be an option if the Pirates suffer any injuries to their infield.

Chase d'Arnaud has been successful on all nine of his stolen base attempts this season.

The 24-year-old infielder doesn't draw enough playing time currently to warrant a spot on a mixed league fantasy roster, but he's certainly flashed impressive base-stealing ability in the few chances he's seen. That could come in handy if d'Arnaud is able to take on a bigger role in 2012.

Pirates activated INF Chase d'Arnaud from the 15-day disabled list.

d'Arnaud hasn't played since July 26 due to a chip fracture in his right pinkie finger. The 24-year-old will likely serve as the primary backup to Ronny Cedeno at shortstop, but he could also see playing time at third base. He is batting just .225/.245/.294 with a .539 OPS over his first 108 plate appearances in the big leagues .
