Indians designated RHP Fabio Martinez for assignment.

They needed to clear some 40-man roster space in preparation for the Rule 5 Draft. Martinez posted a hideous 10.24 ERA while walking 40 over 29 innings at High-A in 2012. He's put up nice numbers in the past, though, so someone will take a shot on the 23-year-old.

Indians claimed RHP Fabio Martinez Mesa off waivers from the Angels; optioned him to Class-A Carolina.

Martinez Mesa has been limited to just 10 appearances (eight starts) over the last two seasons due to shoulder problems. This season, he was 0-5 with a 10.72 ERA over eight starts for Class-A Inland Empire. The 6-foot-3 right-hander was one of the top pitching prospects in the organization prior to his injury woes, but the Angels decided to preserve a spot on the 40-man roster and abandon his development. The 22-year-old isn't close to major league ready, but you need to look only at his career 11.8 K/9 rate in the minors to see his potential.
