Chris Owings (foot) took at-bats in a simulated game on Thursday.
Owings had been hoping to be playing in rehab games by now, but he is making progress. "That’s a step in the right direction," Diamondbacks manager Chip Hale said of the simulated game. Owings should be cleared for game action soon if all goes well. Jun 24 - 9:14 AM

Date:

Chris Owings (foot) could begin a rehab assignment with rookie league Arizona by the middle of the week.

The hope is that Owings will be ready for activation from the disabled list sometime during the Diamondacks' homestand, which begins on June 27. He's missed over a week of action with plantar fasciitis in his left foot but has apparently made progress in recent days.
Jun 19 - 11:52 AM

Diamondbacks placed OF/IF Chris Owings on the 15-day disabled list with plantar fasciitis in his left foot.

The move was made retroactive to June 6 so it's possible Owings could be back in less than two weeks. He's had a bigger impact than expected, hitting .285 with eight steals in 54 games. David Peralta will continue to man center field in his absence.
Jun 11 - 5:43 PM

Chris Owings (foot) is out again Wednesday.

This will be the third straight day off for Owings, who has been bothered by foot discomfort. Diamondbacks manager Chip Hale suggested Tuesday that it might be plantar fasciitis, which can nag for months and even years. David Peralta is starting in center field and batting cleanup Wednesday afternoon against the Rays.
Jun 8 - 12:46 PM

Chris Owings is out of the Diamondbacks' lineup again on Tuesday due to foot discomfort.

It's the second day off in a row for Owings, and Diamondbacks manager Chip Hale acknowledged that the center fielder is showing "the possibility of" plantar fasciitis. There should be an update coming Wednesday.
Jun 7 - 8:43 PM

Chris Owings went 2-for-4 with an RBI double in Saturday's loss to the Giants.

Owings burned Giants starter Jake Peavy for an RBI double in the second inning. It was his sixth of the young season. The 24-year-old outfielder is slashing .295/.347/.402 with the six doubles, three triples, five steals and 14 runs scored over his first 112 at-bats this season. Owings has shown improvement this season after a rough 2015.
May 14 - 11:58 PM

Chris Owings finished 3-for-3 in Friday's loss to the Giants.

He was the only Diamondback with multiple hits tonight. Owings doesn't have a homer yet, but he is hitting .287 with five steals in 108 at-bats. He's pretty much an everyday guy in center field now.
May 14 - 12:57 AM

Chris Owings went 2-for-4 with an RBI double and a run scored in a win over the Rockies on Tuesday.

Owings' run-scoring double got the Diamondbacks on the board in what turned out to be a four-run sixth inning. He still doesn't have a home run yet this season, but he's now got five doubles and two triples to his name. The shortstop-turned-center fielder is hitting .268/.330/.361 with five steals in 31 games.
May 11 - 1:02 AM

Chris Owings went 3-for-5 with three RBI against the Cardinals on Monday.

Socrates Brito hasn't shown much to date, opening the door for Owings to get more time in center. Owings isn't really tearing it up either, but he does have the solid .283 average (though just a .673 OPS) and he's 4-for-4 stealing bases.
Apr 26 - 1:57 AM

Chris Owings will start in center field Monday against the Giants.

Owings will get the first crack in center field with Socrates Brito in the minors. The 24-year-old is batting .200 (6-for-30) with zero extra-base hits through 11 games this season, so the leash might not be very long. He's batting eighth Monday while Jake Lamb will bat second.
Apr 18 - 5:49 PM

Chris Owings went 0-for-3 on Wednesday and has a .200/.200/.200 line after 25 at-bats.

It's right back to 2015 form for Owings after his big spring. He'll be in there against a most lefties, but he's not going to see much more action against righties until he shows he deserves it.
Apr 14 - 1:29 AM

Chris Owings is not in Tuesday's lineup against the Dodgers.

Owings made the start at shortstop on Sunday, but Nick Ahmed is back in the lineup and batting ninth. Socrates Brito has now started three out of the last four games in center field.
Apr 12 - 12:51 PM

Chris Owings will draw another start in center field Thursday against the Cubs.

It's his third start there in four games. Socrates Brito was expected to get most of the playing time in center field but that hasn't been the case early on. Manager Chip Hale said he likes Owings' matchup against John Lackey, which is a little misleading since he's never faced him before. Owings is only a .244 career hitter but he does have some speed (16 steals last year). A.J. Pollock (fractured elbow) isn't coming back anytime soon, so expect Hale to do plenty of mixing and matching in center field.
Apr 7 - 6:42 PM

Chris Owings will bat second and start in center field for Monday's season opener against the Rockies.

Socrates Brito could also be in the mix, but Owings is getting the first chance to fill in with A.J. Pollock sidelined due to an elbow fracture. He could carve out some mixed league value if he sticks in the No. 2 spot. The full D'Backs lineup vs. Jorge De La Rosa: Jean Segura 2B, Owings CF, Paul Goldschmidt 1B, Welington Castillo C, David Peralta RF, Yasmany Tomas LF, Jake Lamb 3B, Zack Greinke P, Nick Ahmed SS.
Apr 4 - 4:46 PM

Chris Owings went 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBI as the Diamondbacks closed Cactus League play with a 4-2 win over the Royals on Saturday.

In his first start in center field -- the position he's expected to man on Opening Day in the wake of A.J. Pollock's elbow injury -- Owings hit a three-run home run in the seventh inning to give the D'backs the victory. He leaves spring with a .368 average, three home runs and 13 RBI and has some mixed league juice if, like he did Saturday, he bats second in a still-potent Diamondbacks lineup.
