Chris Owings (head) finished 1-for-2 with a pair of walks and a run scored in Saturday's game against the Padres.
Owings and A.J. Pollock collided in the third inning Thursday and the outfielder was diagnosed with a head contusion. While he was back in the starting lineup, he still hasn't posted an RBI across the past 10 games. Owings got off to a quick start and can be a fantasy asset, but give him a game or two to straighten out before plugging him back into the active lineup. Apr 22 - 1:44 AM

Date:

Chris Owings (head) is available off the bench Friday.

Owings was involved in a collision with teammate A.J. Pollock in the outfield Thursday, but he passed a concussion test that night and again on Friday. He got off to a great start this season but is currently in a 2-for-22 skid at the plate.
Apr 20 - 5:59 PM

Chris Owings was diagnosed with a head contusion after leaving Thursday's win over the Giants following a third-inning collision with A.J. Pollock.

Owings crashed into fellow outfielder A.J. Pollock while making a catch in the third inning, taking a knee to the face in the process. He subsequently left the game and was later diagnosed with a contusion -- a fancy way of saying that he bruised his head. He said after the game that he has been cleared of a concussion, so it looks at least in the immediate aftermath as though he's dodged something of a bullet. It wouldn't be a surprise to see Owings receive a day or two off to rest up, though.
Apr 20 - 12:30 AM

Chris Owings left Thursday's game against the Giants after injuring his head in an outfield collision.

Owings left in the third inning after getting kneed in the face by teammate A.J. Pollock. Not only did Owings hold on for the catch, but he somehow had the presence of mind to throw the ball in despite being in obvious pain. Owings walked off on his own power but will surely be put through the concussion protocol. He went 0-for-1 in his lone at-bat before exiting. Jarrod Dyson will finish out the game in right field for the D'Backs.
Apr 19 - 10:29 PM

Chris Owings is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Giants.

Jarrod Dyson will get the start in right instead. Owings got off to a terrific start, but has just two hits in his last five games. Dyson doesn't offer the same type of pop, but he's a better defender in the outfield and also provides more value on the bases. Don't be surprised if Dyson takes more starts from Owings going forward.
Apr 18 - 5:16 PM

Chris Owings went 1-for-4 with two RBI in Saturday's loss to the Cardinals.

Owings picked up an RBI single in the third inning and an RBI groundout in the eighth. He was actually supposed to receive the day off, but with Nick Ahmed dealing with an illness, he ended up starting at second base. The 26-year-old is now working on a seven-game hitting streak.
Apr 7 - 5:37 PM

Chris Owings is now in the Diamondbacks' starting lineup on Saturday in place of Nick Ahmed (illness).

Owings was scheduled to get a day off on Saturday, but the illness to Nick Ahmed changed the D'Backs' plans. Owings will start at second base and bat sixth against Michael Wacha and the Cardinals.
Apr 7 - 12:15 PM

Chris Owings is not in the Diamondbacks' starting lineup on Saturday.

He'll get a breather as Daniel Descalso mans third base, Ketel Marte starts at second and Nick Ahmed starts at shortstop against Michael Wacha and the Cardinals. Owings is off to a nice start offensively, slashing a robust .429/.500/.667 with a homer, four RBI and a stolen base in his first seven games.
Apr 7 - 10:59 AM

Chris Owings went 3-for-3 with a double and two runs scored in Thursday's win over the Cardinals.

Getting a start at second base, Owings reached in each of his four plate appearances, also walking in the victory. Not guaranteed a regular spot heading into the season, he's forced his way into the lineup most days by swatting nine hits in his first 21 at-bats. He's got a homer and a steal in seven games. If he continues to get regular at-bats, the 26-year-old has the goods to be a fantasy asset, so it's a development worth watching.
Apr 5 - 11:28 PM

Chris Owings broke out of a Cactus League funk Sunday, going 3-for-4 with two stolen bases and a run scored in an 8-3 win over the Rockies.

Owings had one hit in his last 12 at-bats coming into the game, but batting leadoff and playing right field he picked up three singles on the afternoon. After his first, which led off the contest, he stole second and then third, scoring on an errant throw by catcher Tom Murphy. Owings was slated to start the year in a superutility role, and the demotion of Yasmany Tomas suddenly opens the door for the 26-year-old to find more time in the outfield this year as well. He's talented but a risky fantasy gamble given his playing time uncertainty, but if he does find regular at-bats he suddenly becomes a potential mixed league asset.
Mar 25 - 8:40 PM

Chris Owings went 0-for-3 as his spring training struggles continued against the Indians on Friday.

He did draw a walk in the game but his batting average fell to .205 through 45 plate appearances. Perhaps his slump can be excused due to the fact he got a late start in camp after undergoing a second surgery on his fractured finger in November. Owings is battling for the starting second base job but is expected to serve as a super-utility player to start the season.
Mar 24 - 12:39 AM

Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic writes that the Diamondbacks "seem to be preparing for (Chris Owings) to hold down a super-utility role."

The common feeling coming into spring training seemed to be that Owings would be the favorite to start at second base, but Piecoro says it will likely be Ketel Marte at second and Nick Ahmed at shortstop. Owings should still get a good amount of playing time with his ability to fill in all over the field, but this news obviously isn't great for his fantasy value.
Mar 5 - 8:34 PM

Chris Owings (finger) will be limited at the beginning of spring training.

Owings required a second surgery on his fractured right middle finger in November. He's on track to be ready for Opening Day but enters spring training behind the other Diamondbacks position players. Owings is the favorite to start at second base but could ultimately play a number of positions again.
Feb 18 - 10:45 AM

Diamondbacks and INF Chris Owings avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $3.4 million contract.

It was the second time that Owings was arbitration-eligible. It's a nice raise over the $2.3 million that he earned in 2017. Owings suffered a fractured middle finger at the end of July that forced him to miss the remainder of the 2017 campaign, but he's expected to be fully recovered and ready to go for the start of spring training.
Jan 13 - 9:10 AM

Diamondbacks activated INF Chris Owings from the 60-day disabled list.

Owings suffered a fractured right middle finger in July and was unable to make it back before the end of the season. He's expected to be fully healthy and ready by the start of spring training.
