Diamondbacks manager Chip Hale said Saturday that Chris Owings (shoulder) is progressing ahead of schedule.
Owings had been slated to miss the first 8-10 Cactus League games as he works his way back from surgery on his non-throwing shoulder, but it sounds like he could be ready sooner than that. "I don't have an exact (return) date," Hale said, "but he's past where I thought he was." Owings has bounce-back potential as a fantasy option if he's able to stay healthy. Mar 1 - 9:19 AM

Date:

Chris Owings (shoulder) is expected to be held out of the Diamondbacks' first 8-10 spring games.

But manager Chip Hale told reporters that the young shortstop should be able to catch up by the opening of the 2015 regular season. Owings batted just .261/.300/.406 with six home runs and 26 RBI in 91 games last season for Arizona, but he's a decent fantasy sleeper at a shallow position heading into 2015.

Diamondbacks manager Chip Hale said Monday that Chris Owings (shoulder) may not be ready for the beginning of spring training.

He did, however, say that Owings should be ready to go for Opening Day. Owings underwent surgery in October to repair the posterior labrum in his left (non-throwing) shoulder. It's an ailment that plagued him for much of last season, which could have contributed to his disappointing .261/.300/.406 batting line. Owings is slated to be Arizona's Opening Day shortstop.

Chris Owings will have surgery to repair the posterior labrum in his left shoulder.

Dr. James Andrews will perform the surgery. The Diamondbacks are expecting Owings to be ready for spring training. Owings hit .261/.300/.406 while playing just 91 games due to injury in his rookie year.

Chris Owings (shoulder) is not in the Diamondbacks' lineup Saturday night against the Cardinals.

Owings also missed Friday's game due to his sore shoulder. He may be available to pinch-run on Saturday, according to Diamondbacks interim manager Alan Trammell. Didi Gregorius will start at shortstop again.

Chris Owings was scratched from the Diamondbacks starting lineup on Friday due to a sore shoulder.

Owings initially injured his shoulder on a play at home plate last Friday, and it has bothered him off and on since then. Didi Gregorius will start in his place at shortstop against the Cardinals on Friday.

Chris Owings went 2-for-5 with an RBI, a run scored and a stolen base in Sunday's win over the Padres.

Owings had an RBI single and a run scored in the fifth inning. He also stole his eighth base in the inning. Since coming back from a left shoulder injury, the 23-year-old has struggled, going 9-for-43 (.209) with no extra-base hits. The injury derailed what was a decent rookie campaign.

Chris Owings went 2-for-5 as the D'Backs handed the Padres a 5-1 loss on Thursday.

Owings made his second start since being activated from the disabled list after missing two months with a shoulder injury. The shortstop notched hits in both. Owings has a .278/.312/.452 slash line with six home runs, 22 RBI, and seven stolen bases in 265 plate appearances.

In his first start since returning from the disabled list, Chris Owings went 1-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI via sacrifice fly in Wednesday's 6-1 triumph over San Diego.

Owings grounded out to shortstop as a pinch-hitter in the eighth inning of Tuesday's game, his first action since missing over two months with a left shoulder injury. On Wednesday, skipper Kirk Gibson penciled him in at second base -- Arizona is keen to continue evaluating (or showcasing) Didi Gregorius through the end of the campaign -- and the No. 2 hole. The Snakes will labor to keep Owings, their prized rookie, in the everyday lineup -- perhaps logging time at both second and short -- assuming his shoulder holds up. Owings is slashing .276/.310/.453 through 74 games.

Diamondbacks activated INF Chris Owings from the 15-day disabled list.

Owings wound up missing over two months with a left shoulder injury that was thought to be fairly minor at first. He probably won't be an everyday player for the Diamondbacks down the stretch as they try to get a few different players exposure on the infield.

Chris Owings is expected to rejoin the Diamondbacks when rosters expand on Monday.

Owings is currently on a rehab assignment with Triple-A Reno, where he's starting at second base. He's expected to share time in the middle infield with Didi Gregorius upon his return. A.J. Pollock and Daniel Hudson also look to be on track to join the Diamondbacks on Monday.

Chris Owings (shoulder) is starting at second base for Triple-A Reno on Saturday night.

The Diamondbacks might try to make Owings a little more versatile down the stretch this season as they consider their roster options for the 2015 campaign. He has been on the shelf since June 26 with a left shoulder injury and probably won't be activated for another week. Owings played six innings at shortstop for Reno on Friday.

Chris Owings (shoulder) will begin a rehab assignment with the Arizona League Diamondbacks on Sunday.

Owings will play four games with the rookie-level club before moving to Triple-A Reno on Friday. The D'Backs will give the shortstop a couple weeks' worth of rehab at-bats before activating him. Owings has been out since late June with a slightly dislocated left shoulder. "I think Owings will probably (return in) September," manager Kirk Gibson said. "He's been out a long time. We're going to have him play quite a bit."

Chris Owings (shoulder) will face live pitching on Friday.

It will be the first time he's done so since going down with a slight dislocation of his left shoulder in late June. There's no timetable for Owings' return, but he's finally making real progress. "We're moving as fast we can," Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson said. "We can't rush it."

Chris Owings (shoulder) took 30 swings in an indoor batting cage on Saturday and felt good.

It's another step in the right direction for the young shortstop, who has been out since late June with a slight dislocation of his left shoulder. Owings is expected to begin playing in simulated games late next week and then a rehab assignment will follow. He's likely to rejoin the Diamondbacks around late August.
