Chris Owings went 1-for-3 and swiped his fifth base of the Cactus League season as the Diamondbacks topped the Cubs 6-1 on Friday.
Owings was named as the team's starting second baseman on Friday, which will open up shortstop for Nick Ahmed and force Aaron Hill into a reserve role. The speed this spring has been an encouraging sign out of Owings who managed to steal just eight bases in nine attempts a season ago. Apr 4 - 1:13 AM

Chris Owings went 2-for-3 with a double and a triple as the Diamondbacks topped the Indians 3-2 in Cactus League action.

Even with the two-hit attack though, Owings is hitting just .222 (6-for-27) with no homers and five RBI on the spring, and could be in danger of losing his job to Nick Ahmed. The 23-year-old possesses an intriguing blend of power and speed, but will have to remain on the field to carve out mixed league value this season.

Chris Owings (shoulder) played in a "B" game on Thursday.

It was his first game action this spring. Working his way back from surgery to repair the posterior labrum in his left (non-throwing) shoulder, Owings will play in his first official Cactus League contest on Saturday. "It was good to get out there and play the game and not hesitate," Owings said. "Take full swings and get some ground balls. Slide at home. Those are all things that I've got to do for the first time, get it out of the way and then do it all over again tomorrow."

Chris Owings (shoulder) could make his Cactus League debut as soon as next weekend.

The Diamondbacks are bringing Owings along slowly as he works his way back from surgery to repair the posterior labrum in his left (non-throwing) shoulder. His rehab has gone well, though, and the young infielder still has plenty of time to get ready for Opening Day.
Mar 8 - 3:21 PM

Chris Owings (shoulder) took batting practice for the first time of the spring on Friday without any issues.

He's in the process of recovering from October surgery to repair the posterior labrum in his left shoulder. Owings is expected to miss the team's first 8-10 Cactus League contests but barring any setbacks should have no problem getting enough work in to be ready for Opening Day.

Mar 6 - 9:49 PM

Chris Owings (shoulder) is scheduled to take live batting practice Friday for the first time this spring.

Owings has already been ruled out for the Diamondbacks' first 8-10 spring games, but he should be nearing Cactus League action by the end of next week. The young shortstop underwent surgery in October to repair the posterior labrum in his left (non-throwing) shoulder. He'll be looking to take a step forward in 2015 after batting just .261/.300/.406 in 91 games last season.
Mar 5 - 3:21 PM

Diamondbacks manager Chip Hale said Saturday that Chris Owings (shoulder) is progressing ahead of schedule.

Owings had been slated to miss the first 8-10 Cactus League games as he works his way back from surgery on his non-throwing shoulder, but it sounds like he could be ready sooner than that. "I don't have an exact (return) date," Hale said, "but he's past where I thought he was." Owings has bounce-back potential as a fantasy option if he's able to stay healthy.
Mar 1 - 9:19 AM

Chris Owings (shoulder) is expected to be held out of the Diamondbacks' first 8-10 spring games.

But manager Chip Hale told reporters that the young shortstop should be able to catch up by the opening of the 2015 regular season. Owings batted just .261/.300/.406 with six home runs and 26 RBI in 91 games last season for Arizona, but he's a decent fantasy sleeper at a shallow position heading into 2015.
Feb 19 - 2:44 PM

Diamondbacks manager Chip Hale said Monday that Chris Owings (shoulder) may not be ready for the beginning of spring training.

He did, however, say that Owings should be ready to go for Opening Day. Owings underwent surgery in October to repair the posterior labrum in his left (non-throwing) shoulder. It's an ailment that plagued him for much of last season, which could have contributed to his disappointing .261/.300/.406 batting line. Owings is slated to be Arizona's Opening Day shortstop.

Chris Owings will have surgery to repair the posterior labrum in his left shoulder.

Dr. James Andrews will perform the surgery. The Diamondbacks are expecting Owings to be ready for spring training. Owings hit .261/.300/.406 while playing just 91 games due to injury in his rookie year.

Chris Owings (shoulder) is not in the Diamondbacks' lineup Saturday night against the Cardinals.

Owings also missed Friday's game due to his sore shoulder. He may be available to pinch-run on Saturday, according to Diamondbacks interim manager Alan Trammell. Didi Gregorius will start at shortstop again.

Chris Owings was scratched from the Diamondbacks starting lineup on Friday due to a sore shoulder.

Owings initially injured his shoulder on a play at home plate last Friday, and it has bothered him off and on since then. Didi Gregorius will start in his place at shortstop against the Cardinals on Friday.

Chris Owings went 2-for-5 with an RBI, a run scored and a stolen base in Sunday's win over the Padres.

Owings had an RBI single and a run scored in the fifth inning. He also stole his eighth base in the inning. Since coming back from a left shoulder injury, the 23-year-old has struggled, going 9-for-43 (.209) with no extra-base hits. The injury derailed what was a decent rookie campaign.

Chris Owings went 2-for-5 as the D'Backs handed the Padres a 5-1 loss on Thursday.

Owings made his second start since being activated from the disabled list after missing two months with a shoulder injury. The shortstop notched hits in both. Owings has a .278/.312/.452 slash line with six home runs, 22 RBI, and seven stolen bases in 265 plate appearances.

In his first start since returning from the disabled list, Chris Owings went 1-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI via sacrifice fly in Wednesday's 6-1 triumph over San Diego.

Owings grounded out to shortstop as a pinch-hitter in the eighth inning of Tuesday's game, his first action since missing over two months with a left shoulder injury. On Wednesday, skipper Kirk Gibson penciled him in at second base -- Arizona is keen to continue evaluating (or showcasing) Didi Gregorius through the end of the campaign -- and the No. 2 hole. The Snakes will labor to keep Owings, their prized rookie, in the everyday lineup -- perhaps logging time at both second and short -- assuming his shoulder holds up. Owings is slashing .276/.310/.453 through 74 games.
