Athletics signed LHP Rudy Owens to a minor league contract.
Owens made a spot start for the Astros this past season but spent nearly all of the year at Triple-A, posting a 4.33 ERA with 104 strikeouts over 135 innings. He used to be a decent prospect, but the soon-to-be 27-year-old is merely organizational depth at this point. Nov 14 - 2:39 PM

May 24 - 2:35 AM

Rudy Owens gave up five runs in 5 2/3 innings Friday to take a loss to the Mariners in his major league debut.

May 24 - 1:01 AM

Astros recalled LHP Rudy Owens from Triple-A Oklahoma City.

Owens will make his major league debut on Friday in Seattle. While the left-hander has put up a nice 32/8 K/BB ratio over his first 41 2/3 Triple-A innings this season, it's come along with a 6.05 ERA. He can be avoided in fantasy leagues.
May 23 - 2:31 PM

Rudy Owens will be sidelined for 4-5 months after surgery on Monday to repair a stress fracture in his left foot.

A tough break for the Astros' pitching prospect, as he had been a good candidate to see time in the big league rotation this season. As it is, he'll now be lucky to make it back before the minor league season ends.

Pirates optioned LHP Rudy Owens to Triple-A Indianapolis.

Owens tossed one scoreless inning in his only Grapefruit League appearance. The 24-year-old southpaw posted a 5.05 ERA and 71/32 K/BB ratio over 112 1/3 innings last season at the Triple-A level, but the Pirates added him to the 40-man roster in November. He has a chance of ending up as a back-end starter.

Pirates purchased the contract of LHP Rudy Owens from Triple-A Indianapolis.

Owens, who turns 24 next month, had an underwhelming 5.05 ERA and 71/32 K/BB ratio over 112 1/3 innings this season at the Triple-A level. His command was still solid, so the Pirates will hope for something closer to his breakout 2010 campaign next season.

Pirates president Frank Coonelly remarked that if Rudy Owens "is one of the top three starters coming out of Spring Training, Rudy will break camp with the Pittsburgh Pirates."

Coonelly continued, "Rudy was determined to work hard over the offseason and report to Bradenton ready to win a spot in the major league rotation. A jump from Double-A to the majors is unusual but would not be unheard of, and I certainly would not put it past Rudy Owens." The former 28th round pick posted a 2.46 ERA and 0.98 WHIP at Double-A Altoona last season. Joining a pitching staff that posted the majors' highest ERA last season, Owens certainly has a shot at making the team.
