Athletics signed LHP Rudy Owens to a minor league contract.

Owens made a spot start for the Astros this past season but spent nearly all of the year at Triple-A, posting a 4.33 ERA with 104 strikeouts over 135 innings. He used to be a decent prospect, but the soon-to-be 27-year-old is merely organizational depth at this point.

Astros sent LHP Rudy Owens outright to Triple-A Fresno.

Owens was roughed up badly in his one appearance at the major league level this season and he registered a disappointing 4.33 ERA across 135 innings at Triple-A.

Astros optioned LHP Rudy Owens to Triple-A Oklahoma City.

Astros optioned LHP Rudy Owens to Triple-A Oklahoma City.

Owens likely would have been demoted right away even had he outpitched Felix Hernandez on Friday night. He ended up allowing five runs in 5 2/3 innings in a loss.

Rudy Owens gave up five runs in 5 2/3 innings Friday to take a loss to the Mariners in his major league debut.

Owens was sacrificed as an offering to King Felix after Brad Peacock's sore arm got him scratched. He'll probably head right back to Triple-A now.

Astros recalled LHP Rudy Owens from Triple-A Oklahoma City.

Owens will make his major league debut on Friday in Seattle. While the left-hander has put up a nice 32/8 K/BB ratio over his first 41 2/3 Triple-A innings this season, it's come along with a 6.05 ERA. He can be avoided in fantasy leagues.

Rudy Owens will be sidelined for 4-5 months after surgery on Monday to repair a stress fracture in his left foot.

A tough break for the Astros' pitching prospect, as he had been a good candidate to see time in the big league rotation this season. As it is, he'll now be lucky to make it back before the minor league season ends.

Astros optioned LHP Rudy Owens and RHP Sam Demel to Triple-A Oklahoma City.

Owens was a candidate for a rotation job in spring training, but will open 2013 at Oklahoma City. Demel will be around as bullpen depth.

Astros acquired LHP Rudy Owens from the Pirates.

Owens, 24, has put together a nice year at Triple-A Indianapolis this season, posting a 3.14 ERA and 85/25 K/BB ratio over 117 1/3 innings. He was ranked before the season by Baseball America as the Pirates' 16th-best prospect.

Pirates optioned LHP Rudy Owens to Triple-A Indianapolis.

Owens tossed one scoreless inning in his only Grapefruit League appearance. The 24-year-old southpaw posted a 5.05 ERA and 71/32 K/BB ratio over 112 1/3 innings last season at the Triple-A level, but the Pirates added him to the 40-man roster in November. He has a chance of ending up as a back-end starter.

Pirates purchased the contract of LHP Rudy Owens from Triple-A Indianapolis.

Owens, who turns 24 next month, had an underwhelming 5.05 ERA and 71/32 K/BB ratio over 112 1/3 innings this season at the Triple-A level. His command was still solid, so the Pirates will hope for something closer to his breakout 2010 campaign next season.

Pirates president Frank Coonelly remarked that if Rudy Owens "is one of the top three starters coming out of Spring Training, Rudy will break camp with the Pittsburgh Pirates."

Coonelly continued, "Rudy was determined to work hard over the offseason and report to Bradenton ready to win a spot in the major league rotation. A jump from Double-A to the majors is unusual but would not be unheard of, and I certainly would not put it past Rudy Owens." The former 28th round pick posted a 2.46 ERA and 0.98 WHIP at Double-A Altoona last season. Joining a pitching staff that posted the majors' highest ERA last season, Owens certainly has a shot at making the team.
