Valdes could have elected to become a free agent, but the 36-year-old left-hander has decided to remain in the Astros organization. He was designated for assignment on May 4 after allowing five runs in 3 2/3 innings.

Jerome Williams was getting lit up in the top of the ninth inning, so the Astros turned to Valdes for the final two outs and he responded by fanning both batters he faced. Raul Valdes was shelled for nine runs in 3 2/3 innings Saturday in the Phillies' loss to the Tigers.

It was an ugly scene from the get-go. Valdes gave up five runs in the first inning, three runs in the second inning and one in the fourth. He did not walk a batter but he let up 12 hits, watching his season ERA rise to 9.72.
