Valdes will undergo surgery Monday. He seems likely to earn an Opening Day roster spot next year after posting a 2.90 ERA, 0.74 WHIP and 35/5 K/BB ratio over 31 innings for the Phils this season.

The Phils cleared a spot on the active roster by sending Eric Kratz down to the minors following Tuesday's game. Valdes has a 2.13 ERA and 13/1 K/BB ratio over 12 2/3 innings with the Phillies this season. He'll operate in middle relief.

Phillies purchased the contract of LHP Raul Valdes from Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

Valdes has been terrific for Lehigh Valley this season, posting a 3.86 ERA and 26/1 K/BB ratio over 21 innings. He holds a 4.58 ERA and 1.50 WHIP over 51 career major league appearances, though, so we're not expecting much.

According to Jon Paul Morosi of FOXSports.com, the Phillies have signed left-hander Raul Valdes to a minor league contract with an invite to spring training.

The Phillies have yet to confirm the signing. Valdes, who turns 34 later this month, allowed four runs on 14 hits over 12 innings this season between the Yankees and Cardinals.

Valdes was outrighted off the Yankees' 40-man roster this week and opted to refuse an assignment to the minor leagues. The 33-year-old southpaw surrendered 14 hits in 12 innings this season for the Yanks and Cardinals.
