Rays sent OF Jerry Sands outright to Triple-A Durham.

Sands had been designated for assignment on Monday, and he cleared waivers. Sands batted .190/.227/.333 in 12 games with the Rays in 2014, and he'll serve as minor league depth going forward.
Nov 5 - 10:21 PM

Rays activated OF Jerry Sands from the 60-day disabled list; designated him for assignment.

Sands hit just .190/.227/.333 in 12 games for the Rays before having his season end in July due to left wrist surgery. The 27-year-old used to be a decent prospect but hasn't done much in his chances at the major league level.
Nov 3 - 1:37 PM

Rays transferred OF Jerry Sands from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day disabled list.

The move clears a spot on the 40-man roster for the return of Wil Myers. Sands is out for the season following left wrist surgery.
Aug 20 - 3:20 PM

Jerry Sands needs season-ending surgery on his left wrist.

Sands simply wasn't recovering as hoped and it turns out he needs to get cut open. The outfielder picked up just four hits in 21 at-bats for the Rays this season.
Jul 11 - 4:14 PM

Jerry Sands (wrist) ran the bases on Tuesday.

Sands is a little over two weeks removed from straining his left wrist and is finally ready to do some baseball activities. There's no timetable for him to swing a bat, which obviously will be the biggest step for him.
Jul 9 - 9:38 AM

Rays placed OF Jerry Sands on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left wrist.

Sands has picked up just four hits in 21 at-bats since his promotion earlier this month. The Rays will announce a corresponding move prior to Tuesday's contest.
Jun 23 - 10:55 PM

Jerry Sands is expected to miss at least the next two weeks because of a left wrist injury.

An exact diagnosis has not been revealed, but Sands had his left arm in a splint on Monday evening. He is 4-for-21 (.190) since his June 1 promotion to the majors and will likely land on the disabled list Tuesday.
Jun 23 - 3:58 PM

Pinch-hitter Jerry Sands delivered a two-run homer off Brian Matusz in the bottom of the eighth to lead the Rays to a 5-4 win over the Orioles on Monday.

Manager Joe Maddon originally sent up David DeJesus to hit for Sean Rodriguez in a 3-3 game. When the Orioles countered by replacing Darren O'Day with Matusz, the Rays brought in Sands and Sands hit his first big-league homer since 2011. He had four in 198 at-bats for the Dodgers that year, but he's been given just 34 major league at-bats in the three years since.
Jun 17 - 12:22 AM

Rays purchased the contract of OF Jerry Sands from Triple-A Durham.

Sands earned the call-up after batting .268/.352/.474 with nine homers over 54 games at Durham. He's in the DH spot and hitting cleanup Sunday for the Rays and should see pretty regular playing time while Wil Myers (wrist) is out. Sands is worth a look in AL-only formats.
Jun 1 - 10:44 AM

Rays coach Dave Martinez said Saturday that Jerry Sands will get a look at third base this spring in an effort to further increase his versatility.

Rays manager Joe Maddon loves players who are versatile defensively, and Sands can increase his chances of making the team with each new position he can learn. He currently has the ability to man first base or either corner outfield spot. The 26-year-old is hitting .375 (9-for-24) with three homers and six RBI in Grapefruit League play.
Mar 15 - 1:05 PM

Rays sent OF/1B Jerry Sands outright to Triple-A Durham.

Sands cleared waivers after being designated for assignment earlier this week. The 26-year-old will receive an invite to major league spring training and should be useful depth to have around.
Jan 9 - 4:36 PM

Rays designated OF/1B Jerry Sands for assignment.

The move clears a spot for the newly-claimed Pedro Figueroa on the 40-man roster. Sands was just claimed off waivers from the Pirates before the holidays and could be on the move again soon.
Jan 7 - 1:32 PM

Rays claimed OF/1B Jerry Sands off waivers from the Pirates.

Sands, a former top prospect of the Dodgers, struggled in 2013 with the Pirates' Triple-A team and did not receive a major league at-bat. The 26-year-old is doubtful to make the Rays' Opening Day roster next spring.

Pirates designated OF/1B Jerry Sands for assignment.

The former highly-touted prospect spent the majority of the season toiling away at Triple-A Indianapolis, where he slashed a meager .207/.311/.329 with seven homers and 34 RBI in 106 games. There's still plenty of potential in his bat though, and it wouldn't be surprising to see another team willing to take a chance on him.
