Robbie Erlin is throwing bullpens at the Padres' complex in Arizona, but he appears unlikely to pitch in the majors this year after May 2016 Tommy John surgery.
Erlin's original hope was to complete his rehab around the All-Star break, but it hasn't gone that smoothly. Now it looks like he could pitch in games in the instructional league in October and compete for a rotation spot next spring. Aug 11 - 10:37 AM

Robbie Erlin (elbow) is hoping to return around midseason.

Erlin underwent Tommy John surgery last May. He's been taking part in fielding and bunting practice and hopes to begin throwing off a mound before the end of spring training. "I don't think there's really like a set date," Erlin said. "We kind of stay away from that so you don't get too jumpy. We just go based on feel. Right now, late June, early July is kind of what we're eyeballing, if everything goes well."

Erlin looked out of sorts in his last start, allowing six runs and eight hits over six innings Sunday in a loss to Arizona. To this point, Erlin has not undergone an MRI. It's been a nightmare injury month for the Padres, who have already lost Tyson Ross (shoulder), Yangervis Solarte (hamstring) and Cory Spangenberg (quad).

Robbie Erlin struggled in Sunday's loss to the Diamondbacks, giving up six runs on eight hits over his six innings.

Erlin walked one and struck out four on the afternoon. His biggest downfall was the long ball in this one as Yasmany Tomas launched a pair of home runs against him and Brandon Drury also left the yard. Even with the rough outing, he still sports a respectable 4.02 ERA, 0.96 WHIP and 13/3 K/BB ratio through 15 2/3 innings on the season. He'll look to get back on track against the Cardinals at home on Saturday.
