Yankees right-handed pitching prospect Rafael DePaula struck out eight batters in five innings for High-A Tampa on Friday.

DePaula scattered eight hits, one walk, and one hit batsman to limit the Charlotte Stone Crabs to one run. Opposing batters have a .257/.346/.350 line for the season. He has an 11.4 K/9 rate and a 4.3 BB/9 rate, which, combined with his history of injuries, could turn him into a high-leverage reliever with the potential to be an elite closer.

Yankees right-handed pitching prospect Rafael DePaula struck out seven batters while allowing only one run in six innings for High-A Tampa on Wednesday night.

He allowed two hits (both doubles) and two walks, lowering his ERA to 2.51 and his WHIP to 1.047. DePaula boasts an electric mid-90s fastball that has enough movement to generate strikeouts, but he has poor command and issues too many walks. The Yankees are using him as a starter, but the 23-year old DePaula is old for a prospect in High-A, and he could be in the Bronx in short order if he were to be moved to relief.

Yankees right-handed pitching prospect Rafael DePaula struck out six in five innings, allowing only two hits for High-A Tampa on Friday night.

For DePaula, who has 12 strikeouts in 8 1/3 innings to start 2014, the question has never been if he has the pitching ability to become a dominant starting pitcher. The question has been if he can stay healthy for long enough to have sustained success. DePaula has an 11.9K/9 ratio during his time in professional baseball, so if he can build on the 113 1/3 innings he pitched in 2013, he could be in the Yankees rotation in 2015. If injuries continue to cause him to miss time, he could be a legitimate force at the back end of a bullpen.

The Yankees have promoted Rafael DePaula to High-A Tampa.

DePaula posted a 2.94 ERA and 13.4 K/9 over 13 starts with Low-A Charleston, so it was only a matter of time before he was promoted. The 22-year-old right-hander has legitimate frontline starter potential and should continue to move quickly through the Yankees' minor league system.

Yankees prospect Rafael DePaula is averaging 15.7 strikeouts per nine innings and has a 2.70 ERA over 34 total frames this season at Low-A Charleston.

His 58 total strikeouts are the most in the minor leagues. DePaula spent all of last season in the Dominican Summer League, so the Yankees conservatively started him out at their Low-A affiliate. He has little left to prove there at this point and it's only a matter of time before he's promoted to High-A Tampa or Double-A Trenton. DePaula, 22, boasts legitimate frontline starter potential and has established himself as one of the Yankees' best pitching prospects.

Yankees prospect right-hander Rafael DePaula is scheduled to make his professional debut Saturday for Low-A Charleston.

DePaula originally signed with the Yankees in 2010, but didn't obtain his work visa until last March. The 22-year-old has top of the rotation potential and should progress quickly through the minors. He posted a 1.46 ERA over 14 starts in the Dominican Summer League in 2012.

According to Ben Nicholson-Smith of MLB Trade Rumors, Dominican right-hander Rafael DePaula has finally obtained a work visa.

The Yankees agreed to sign DePaula way back in November of 2010. He worked out at the team's academy in the Dominican Republic last season, but his pro career has been on hold because his contract isn't yet official. DePaula, who turns 21 this month, was previously suspended by MLB in 2009 after lying about his age and identity.
