Padres purchased the contract of LHP Juan Oramas from Double-A San Antonio.

The 23-year-old southpaw finished with a 2.87 ERA with a 1.21 WHIP and 79/18 K/BB ratio in 62 2/3 innings between Double-A and the Padres' rookie league affiliate. Oramas' addition to the 40-man roster protects him from being selected in December's Rule 5 Draft.

The move protects him from December's Rule 5 Draft. Oramas, 21, posted a 3.49 ERA and 106/29 K/BB ratio over 108 1/3 innings this season between Double- and Triple-A. He's only 5-foot-10, but has three average or better pitches, including a plus-curveball. The southpaw should begin the 2012 season at the Triple-A level.
