Sam Freeman (shoulder) will return to Grapefruit League action Sunday.

Freeman hasn't appeared in a game since February 25 due to an impingement in his pitching shoulder. He wasn't going to make the Opening Day roster, anyway, and should be fine to start the Triple-A season on time.

Sam Freeman has been diagnosed with an impingement in his left (throwing) shoulder.

It's not an ideal diagnosis, but it could have been worse. The left-hander will be shut down for a couple of days. He has little chance of making the 25-man roster.

Sam Freeman plans to "see a doctor in the coming days about renewed discomfort in his biceps," according to Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Freeman had to bow out of the Arizona Fall League early because of a similar biceps issue. He will open the year at Triple-A Memphis no matter what the doctor says.

Sam Freeman will not appear in any more Arizona Fall League games due to mild left bicep tendinitis.

Cardinals farm director John Vuch said the tendinitis is not a big deal, but there's no reason to push the young left-hander. Freeman posted a 5.40 ERA with 18 strikeouts over 20 innings for the Cards this season and will try to win a spot in the bullpen next spring.

Freeman has a chance to stick as a left-handed specialist, and looks to be the preferred option to Barret Browning. The 25-year-old was posting a 1.89 ERA and 1.11 WHIP in 42 minor league appearances.

Cardinals reliever Sam Freeman (oblique) has been placed on the 7-day minor league disabled list.

Freeman is behind only Marc Rzepczynski and Barret Browning as the Cardinals' left-handed, one-out specialist. If healthy, he remains a lock to be promoted when rosters expand. Freeman is posting a 1.77 ERA in 40 minor league appearances.

Freeman made his major league debut in early-June with the Cardinals, but will need to work on his command before being reconsidered for a promotion. The Cardinals promoted Barret Browning from Triple-A Memphis in a corresponding move.

Joe Strauss of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that the Cardinals will recall Sam Freeman from Triple-A Memphis before Friday's game.

It will be Freeman's major league debut when he gets into a game, as he was just called up to Memphis a couple weeks ago. The southpaw holds a 2.31 ERA and 17/8 K/BB ratio over 23 1/3 innings between Double- and Triple-A this season while holding left-handed batters to a .179 average. He'll give the Cards another lefty in the bullpen alongside Marc Rzepczynski.

Cardinals purchased the contract of LHP Sam Freeman from Double-A Springfield.

Freeman, 24, made his way back from Tommy John surgery this season, posting a 3.16 ERA and 59/32 K/BB ratio over 68 1/3 innings between High-A Palm Beach and Double-A Springfield. He could have a future has a left-handed specialist.
