Rangers designated LHP Sam Freeman for assignment.

Freeman was just acquired via trade from the Cardinals last week but the Rangers have elected to not have a lefty in the bullpen rather than carry him on the roster. Still, as a southpaw that can throw in the mid-90s, he could be scooped up on waivers.

Rangers acquired LHP Sam Freeman from the Cardinals for a player to be named later or cash considerations.

Freeman was unlikely to crack the Cardinals' Opening Day bullpen, so they opted to flip him to get what they could. The 27-year-old posted a 2.61 ERA, and 1.40 WHIP with a 35/19 K/BB ratio in 38 innings in 2014.

Cardinals recalled LHP Sam Freeman from Triple-A Memphis.

Freeman, a hard-throwing southpaw, will function as a left-handed specialist for St. Louis. The 26-year-old has a 4.05 ERA in 33 1/3 career major league innings.

Cardinals optioned LHP Sam Freeman to Triple-A Memphis.

Freeman was removed from the 25-man roster to clear a spot for Jason Motte, who is back from Tommy John surgery. Freeman pitched one scoreless inning during his short stay in St. Louis. He'll get an extended look soon.

Cardinals recalled LHP Sam Freeman from Triple-A Memphis.

Freeman is unscored upon in four relief appearances for the Cards this year and boasts a 2.97 ERA at Triple-A. He'll operate as a third left-hander out of the bullpen.

Cardinals optioned LHP Sam Freeman to Triple-A Memphis.

Freeman has pitched in back-to-back games, so the Cardinals are calling up Tyler Lyons as bullpen depth. The 26-year-old has yet to allow a run in four appearances at the major league level.

Cardinals recalled LHP Sam Freeman from Triple-A Memphis.

Freeman, 26, has a 2.95 ERA and 61/24 K/BB ratio in 64 innings this season at Triple-A. He should do well in a left-handed specialist role for the big-league Redbirds.

Cardinals optioned LHP Sam Freeman to Triple-A Memphis.

Freeman was sidelined with a shoulder impingement this spring, but he managed to return to action Sunday against the Mets. The 25-year-old southpaw will provide bullpen depth in the minors.

Sam Freeman (shoulder) will return to Grapefruit League action Sunday.

Freeman hasn't appeared in a game since February 25 due to an impingement in his pitching shoulder. He wasn't going to make the Opening Day roster, anyway, and should be fine to start the Triple-A season on time.

Sam Freeman has been diagnosed with an impingement in his left (throwing) shoulder.

It's not an ideal diagnosis, but it could have been worse. The left-hander will be shut down for a couple of days. He has little chance of making the 25-man roster.

Sam Freeman plans to "see a doctor in the coming days about renewed discomfort in his biceps," according to Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Freeman had to bow out of the Arizona Fall League early because of a similar biceps issue. He will open the year at Triple-A Memphis no matter what the doctor says.

Sam Freeman will not appear in any more Arizona Fall League games due to mild left bicep tendinitis.

Cardinals farm director John Vuch said the tendinitis is not a big deal, but there's no reason to push the young left-hander. Freeman posted a 5.40 ERA with 18 strikeouts over 20 innings for the Cards this season and will try to win a spot in the bullpen next spring.
