Cubs prospect SS Addison Russell went 2-for-4 with a solo home run on Thursday for Double-A Tennessee.
The homer was Russell's first since joining the Cubs organization and his second in 27 games this season. The 20-year-old has started to heat up at the plate after going 0-for-9 with four strikeouts in his first two games with Tennessee, as he's batted .308 with two extra-base hits over his last seven contests. As long as he can stay healthy, Russell seems poised for a big second half with his new team. Jul 18 - 2:41 PM

Date:

Cubs shortstop prospect Addison Russell went 2-for-5 for the second consecutive night for Double-A Tennessee.

Russell was 0-for-9 over his first two games, but has gone 4-for-10 over his last two games, bringing his Cubs-only line to .211/.211/.211 over four games. Russell is a better shortstop, both now and long-term, than Javier Baez, but the Cubs future infield is beyond crowded, with Arismendy Alcantara, Baez, Kris Bryant, and Russell making the case for three spots, one of which is already in the possession of 22-year old Starlin Castro.
Jul 12 - 12:27 PM

Cubs acquired SS Addison Russell, OF Billy McKinney, RHP Dan Straily and a player to be named or cash considerations from the Athletics for RHP Jeff Samardzija and RHP Jason Hammel.

The 20-year-old shortstop is widely considered one of the top all-around prospects in all of baseball and is the centerpiece of the deal for the Cubs. The A’s first round selection from the 2012 draft missed two months of the season due to a torn hamstring, but appears to be fully recovered. Russell is hitting .297/.400/.422 with a homer, nine RBI and four stolen bases through his first 18 games of the 2014 campaign between High-A Stockton and Double-A Midland. His arrival could shift Javier Baez away from the shortstop position.
Jul 5 - 12:06 PM

Addison Russell's rehab from a torn right hamstring has been moved from High-A Stockton to Double-A Midland.

Russell started the season well, but tore his hamstring and missed two months. He is back in the Texas League, and will look to make up for lost time. Russell still has an outside chance to reach the major leagues by the end of the season, but will likely be in line to make his major league debut in early 2015.
Jun 16 - 7:46 AM

Athletics prospect SS Addison Russell returned to action on Sunday, going 2-for-3 with an RBI and walk for High-A Stockton.

The 20-year-old also stole a base in the contest, which is a good sign considering he'd missed the previous two months with a hamstring injury. Russell likely will return to Double-A Midland, where he began the season, once the organization is comfortable with his progress, though the injury and subsequent time on the disabled list has hurt his chances of late-season call-up to the major leagues.
Jun 9 - 1:34 PM

Athletics shortstop prospect Addison Russell (hamstring) will play for High-A Stockton on Sunday.

Russell has been playing in extended spring training games and is ready for some official contests. He'll eventually return to Double-A Midland, where he injured his hamstring in early April, once the A's think he's ready. Russell had been a guy that could have pushed for a cup of coffee this season, but the injury probably has derailed that possibility.
Jun 6 - 9:45 AM

Addison Russell (hamstring) played four innings in an extended spring training game on Wednesday.

Russell sustained a Grade 3 strain of his right hamstring in early April, and he's coming back slowly as to avoid further injury. Russell may make an appearance with the Athletics in September, with an eye on being in Oakland by 2015.
May 28 - 6:37 PM

Athletics shortstop prospect Addison Russell will miss at least a month with a Grade 3 strain of his right hamstring, Yahoo Sports' Jeff Passan reports.

Russell was placed on the seven-day disabled list Sunday with a strained hamstring, but Passan hears it's a more serious tear than initially indicated. Before the injury, it was believed the former first-round pick could be in Oakland before the end of the season. With the setback, it may be 2015 before he makes his major league debut.
Apr 9 - 8:35 PM

Addison Russell has been placed on the seven-day disabled list at Double-A Midland with a strained hamstring.

Russell sustained the injury during the second game of the season. He dealt with a similar ailment during spring training as well. One of the top prospects in all of baseball, Russell was off to a blistering start at the plate, going 5-for-7 with a double and a homer in his first two games.
Apr 6 - 9:15 PM

Athletics prospect shortstop Addison Russell has gone 5-for-7 with a home run and a double.

Russell dealt with a hamstring ailment during spring training, but it seems fine now. His consistent success at levels where he is one of the youngest players suggests that he will be ready for the major leagues soon. If he's available in a keeper league, keep an eye on him as he could develop into a middle of the order threat who plays shortstop.
Apr 5 - 9:28 AM

Athletics reassigned SS Addison Russell, INF Darwin Perez and RHPs Philip Humber, Deryk Hooker and Matt Buschmann to minor league camp.

The A's planned to make Russell one of the final cuts, but he's dealing with a hamstring ailment and will work on rehabbing it in minor league camp. One of the top prospects in the game, Russell has a shot to make his major league debut at some point this season.
Mar 16 - 12:37 PM

Addison Russell (hamstring) is progressing well in his recovery, and is expected to take batting practice on Saturday.

He has already been taking ground balls in the infield, and could return to game action early in the week. The A's top prospect has hit .280 (7-for-25) with three extra-base hits and three RBI in 12 games this spring.
Mar 15 - 11:56 AM

Addison Russell (hamstring) will miss at least one week.

This news doesn't much impact fantasy owners, as Russell had no chance of cracking the Opening Day roster. Russell left Monday's game versus the Dodgers with a strained right hamstring. The ridiculously gifted 20-year-old will begin the season at Double-A Midland, but it's not of out the question that he could debut with the A's before September.
Mar 11 - 12:21 PM

Addison Russell left Monday's game versus the Dodgers with a strained right hamstring.

Russell suffered the strain while running to second base after doubling off of the Dodgers' Brian Wilson. He left the field on a cart, but that is viewed as a precaution. It's not clear how long the top prospect might be sidelined. Russell is expected to open the season at Double-A.
Mar 10 - 7:24 PM

Addison Russell went 2-for-2 with a double against the D'Backs on Thursday.

It's very unlikely that Russell will break camp with the A's but he should make his major league debut at some point during the season.
