Addison Russell (foot) is feeling better as he goes through workouts, but there's no timetable for his return.

Russell had said that he expected to return from the disabled list when eligible this past Saturday, but obviously that didn't happen. Cubs general manager Jed Hoyer said that the shortstop is dealing with a bit of plantar fasciitis in addition to a muscular issue with his foot and that he'll require a rehab assignment before returning. It sounds like it could be a while before he's activated. Javy Baez has been handling shortstop for the Cubs.

Addison Russell (foot) expects to be activated from the disabled list when first eligible on Saturday.

Russell landed on the DL on Friday with a right foot strain, but he's feeling better and thinks he'll only need the minimum 10 days. Javier Baez is getting a fourth straight start at shortstop with Russell out.
Aug 6 - 12:16 PM

Cubs placed SS Addison Russell on the 10-day disabled list, retroactive to August 2, with a right foot strain.

It's unclear at this point how long he will be on the shelf. Javier Baez will function as the Cubs' regular shortstop while Russell is sidelined.

Addison Russell (foot) remained out of the Cubs' lineup Friday.

It's the second straight game he's missed due to a foot injury. The Cubs haven't ruled out a stint on the disabled list for Russell, who will continue to be evaluated. Javy Baez will handle shortstop Friday.

Addison Russell went 1-for-3 and made a key error in a loss to the Diamondbacks on Wednesday.

His second-inning single was one of just three knocks his team could manage in the whole ballgame and all three were singles. He made a throwing error that contributed to a two-run sixth inning for the Diamondbacks and that was more than enough for them to snare the win. Russell is slowly improving his performance at the plate and is now slashing .241/.305/.417 with 10 homers and 36 RBI.
Aug 3 - 12:53 AM

Addison Russell swatted his 10th home run of the season as the Cubs topped the White Sox on Wednesday night.

Russell finished the evening 2-for-5. His solo shot in the ninth inning increased the Cubs' advantage to 8-3. For the season, he's hitting .241/.306/.425 with 10 long balls and 35 RBI.

Jul 19 - 4:03 PM

Addison Russell is not in Monday's lineup versus the Braves.

It sounds like a routine day off for the young shortstop. Javier Baez will cover shortstop duties and bat eighth. Ben Zobrist will bat leadoff and play second base.
Jul 17 - 2:45 PM

Addison Russell went 2-for-4 with a home run and three runs scored in a win over the Orioles on Saturday.

He took a Wade Miley offering over the left field wall in the second inning. It was his ninth longball of the season and provided his 31st RBI. He also homered in Friday's game. His owners would like to see the 23-year-old start paying off on some of his vaunted potential. He seems to be heating up a little after a very slow early portion of the season. His slash line is .234/.305/.411 through 292 plate appearances.
Jul 15 - 10:40 PM

Addison Russell clubbed a go-ahead solo homer in the ninth inning on Friday, powering the Cubs to a 9-8 victory over the Orioles.

The Cubs utilized four early home runs to take an 8-0 lead through three innings, which they would give completely back over the next five frames. Russell tagged O's closer Brad Brach for the solo shot in the ninth that proved to be the difference. He finished the night 2-for-4 with a pair of runs scored and is now hitting .230/.300/.398 with eight long balls and 30 RBI on the season.
Jul 14 - 11:40 PM

Addison Russell is not in the Cubs' lineup Saturday against the Pirates.

He's just getting a breather. Javier Baez will fill in at shortstop and bat eighth against Bucs right-hander Ivan Nova. An All-Star in 2016, Russell has slumped to a lousy .228/.297/.386 slash line over 254 at-bats this season.
Jul 8 - 4:07 PM

Addison Russell (shoulder) is in the Cubs' starting lineup on Thursday against the Nationals.

He'll start at shortstop and bat fifth after missing a handful of games with right shoulder discomfort. Russell is slashing .230/.298/.404 with seven home runs, 29 RBI, two stolen bases, and 36 runs scored in 70 games this season for the defending World Series champions.
Jun 29 - 12:37 PM

Addison Russell (shoulder) could return to the Cubs' starting lineup Thursday.

Russell hasn't started a game since exiting Sunday's series finale against the Marlins with right shoulder discomfort, but he did pinch-hit on Monday and Tuesday. It's clearly not an overly serious injury. Cubs manager Joe Maddon needs Russell active now more than ever with Kris Bryant (ankle) and Ben Zobrist (wrist) both sidelined.
