Addison Russell said Monday that he's still "in the strengthening stage" with his ailing left hamstring.
In other words, he's yet to resume baseball activities. Russell said the hamstring "feels great" and "each day is significant growth," but it's unclear when he might be given the go-ahead to run. Russell strained his left hamstring while legging out a triple in Game 3 of the NLDS against the Cardinals. Javier Baez will fill in in at shortstop in the best-of-seven Championship Series and try to build some momentum toward an expanded major league role in 2016. Russell could rejoin the postseason roster if the Cubs advance to the World Series.

Cubs manager Joe Maddon said Addison Russell (hamstring) would be doubtful to play in a potential NLDS Game 5 against the Cardinals on Thursday.

Russell left Game 3 on Monday with left hamstring tightness and was sent for an MRI on Tuesday. The Cubs should have more clarity on his situation soon, but they aren't counting on him for the remainder of the NLDS. Javier Baez is starting at shortstop in Game 4 on Tuesday.

Russell's hand look to hit third base awkwardly as he slid in with a triple in the bottom of the fourth inning. The Cubs should have more on his status shortly. He was replaced in the game by Javier Baez.

Addison Russell went 3-for-5 with a double, two RBI, and two stolen bases as the Cubs beat the Reds 10-3 on Wednesday.

Russell hit an RBI single, stole second base, and was stranded in the fourth. In the sixth, he hit into a fielder's choice, stole second, and was stranded. He singled and scored in the eighth, and ended his night by hitting an RBI double in the ninth. Russell has been solid in his rookie campaign, batting .241/.304/.388 with 13 home runs, 53 RBI, 57 runs scored, and four stolen bases.

Addison Russell clobbered a pair of home runs on Friday, leading the Cubs offense in a 14-5 rout over the Diamondbacks.

Russell swatted a solo home run off D'Backs starter Zack Godley in the second inning, increasing the Cubbies early lead to 4-0. He victimized him again in the fourth, this time a two-run homer, putting the Cubs ahead 6-1. He also drew a walk, finishing the afternoon 2-for-3 with three runs scored and three RBI. The rookie shortstop is hitting .244/.303/.403 with 12 long balls and 41 RBI.

Russell tied the game at 3-3 with his fifth-inning double, but the Cubs would fall behind 7-5 after the Reds scored six times in the top of the ninth. Russell made a feeble attempt at a comeback, drilling a solo home run in the ninth inning against Aroldis Chapman, but it was a drop in the ocean. The rookie is batting a mediocre .243/.300/.390 with 10 home runs and 36 RBI on the year.

Addison Russell (groin) went 0-for-3 with a strikeout in his return to the Cubs' lineup Wednesday.

Russell missed a couple of games with tightness in his groin. It obviously wasn't anything major. The 21-year-old didn't show much at the plate in his return Wednesday, but he made some slick plays at shortstop.
