Addison Russell went 2-for-3 with a two-run home run Saturday facing the Mariners.
Russell hit a two-run home run -- his first of the spring -- off of Felix Hernandez in the third inning. His terrific spring performance has flown under the radar thanks to teammate Kris Bryant. Russell is now batting .409 (9-for-22) with three doubles. He won't break camp with the team, but he's expected to be a long-term fixture with the Cubs along with Bryant. Mar 21 - 7:46 PM

The Cubs are shutting down Addison Russell from the Arizona Fall League.

Russell is healthy, but the Cubs feel like he has played a full season. The 20-year-old is one of the top shortstop prospects in the majors, but he saw some time at second base during the Arizona Fall League in an effort to increase his versatility. It's not clear where he'll fit in 2015, but he's on the fast track to the big leagues.

Cubs prospect Addison Russell has played second base in the Arizona Fall League.

Cubs president Theo Epstein said earlier this month that Russell would prepare to play multiple positions and the 20-year-old made his first start at second base last Monday. "Everything's going good," said Russell. "I missed nine weeks so not only the at-bats, I need to get some reps at short and possibly at second. That's what I'm working on right now." The Cubs still have Starlin Castro at shortstop, so they are simply keeping their options open. The logjam could ultimately be resolved with a trade.

Cubs president Theo Epstein revealed at a season ticket holder event Friday that shortstop prospect Addison Russell has been told to be prepared to play multiple positions next season.

Unless they make a trade or two this offseason, the Cubs have a logjam at shortstop, so it makes sense that they'd prep Russell to play elsewhere. That said, Russell is capable defensively at the position, so it would seem to be a bit of a waste moving him to a less premium position. Chicago remains likely to be active in trade talks over the winter.

Cubs prospect SS Addison Russell went 2-for-5 with a home run and five RBI on Tuesday for Double-A Tennessee.

The home run, a grand slam to the opposite field, was Russell’s 10th since coming over from the A’s on July 6. In general, the 20-year-old has put impressive numbers at Tennessee, batting .301/.348/.556 with 19 extra-base hits, 27 runs and 27 RBI in 39 games. The only thing Russell hasn’t done this season is steal bases, though that should have been expected after he missed most of the first half with a hamstring injury. For that same reason, it would make sense for the Cubs to send him for another tour of the Arizona Fall League.

Cubs shortstop prospect Addison Russell went 2-for-5 with a double, a home run, and stolen base on Monday for Double-A Tennessee.

Russell has hit well in Tennessee, putting up a .297/.346/.534 line with eight doubles and nine home runs over 38 games. His season was interrupted by injury, but he has flashed the potential to be an elite shortstop. He should be in Chicago by the end of 2015.

Cubs shortstop prospect Addison Russell went 2-for-4 with a double and a walk for Double-A Tennessee on Saturday.

Russell has hits in 19 of his last 22 games, and he is hitting .345/.394/.575 with five doubles and five home runs during that time. Russell has the potential to hit .300 with 15-plus home runs, which would make him a top 3 shortstop.

Cubs prospect SS Addison Russell went 1-for-3 with a home run and two RBI on Sunday for Double-A Tennessee.

Russell, 20, has raked since coming over from the A’s in early July, as Sunday’s performance pushed his Tennessee batting line to .293/.333/.566 through 25 games. Russell also has found his power stroke during that time, as he’s already clubbed eight home runs and three doubles for his new team. He’s now hit safely in nine of his last 10 games, batting .364 with five home runs during that span.

Cubs prospect shortstop Addison Russell went 4-for-6 with a double for Double-A Tennessee on Monday, raising his line to .303/.338/.579.

Russell has hits in each of his last five games, hitting .480/.480/.920 with two doubles and three home runs. He has the potential to hit .300 with 15-20 home runs and 15-20 stolen bases, which would make him a top 25 player in fantasy baseball. The Cubs have begun the process of moving Javier Baez to second base, and Russell could be in Chicago as soon as early-2015.

Cubs shortstop prospect Addison Russell went 2-for-5 with two home runs for Double-A Tennessee on Friday.

Russell has hit .250/.297/.517 since being traded to the Cubs organization, but has ripped five home runs. Javier Baez has been spending time at second base, which strongly indicates that the Cubs front office views Russell as their shortstop of the future. Starlin Castro has shortstop locked down in Chicago, and the off-season will likely be filled with trade rumors of ways to open a hole for Chicago's biggest acquisition.

Cubs prospect SS Addison Russell went 2-for-4 with a solo home run on Thursday for Double-A Tennessee.

The homer was Russell's first since joining the Cubs organization and his second in 27 games this season. The 20-year-old has started to heat up at the plate after going 0-for-9 with four strikeouts in his first two games with Tennessee, as he's batted .308 with two extra-base hits over his last seven contests. As long as he can stay healthy, Russell seems poised for a big second half with his new team.

Cubs shortstop prospect Addison Russell went 2-for-5 for the second consecutive night for Double-A Tennessee.

Russell was 0-for-9 over his first two games, but has gone 4-for-10 over his last two games, bringing his Cubs-only line to .211/.211/.211 over four games. Russell is a better shortstop, both now and long-term, than Javier Baez, but the Cubs future infield is beyond crowded, with Arismendy Alcantara, Baez, Kris Bryant, and Russell making the case for three spots, one of which is already in the possession of 22-year old Starlin Castro.

Cubs acquired SS Addison Russell, OF Billy McKinney, RHP Dan Straily and a player to be named or cash considerations from the Athletics for RHP Jeff Samardzija and RHP Jason Hammel.

The 20-year-old shortstop is widely considered one of the top all-around prospects in all of baseball and is the centerpiece of the deal for the Cubs. The A’s first round selection from the 2012 draft missed two months of the season due to a torn hamstring, but appears to be fully recovered. Russell is hitting .297/.400/.422 with a homer, nine RBI and four stolen bases through his first 18 games of the 2014 campaign between High-A Stockton and Double-A Midland. His arrival could shift Javier Baez away from the shortstop position.

Addison Russell's rehab from a torn right hamstring has been moved from High-A Stockton to Double-A Midland.

Russell started the season well, but tore his hamstring and missed two months. He is back in the Texas League, and will look to make up for lost time. Russell still has an outside chance to reach the major leagues by the end of the season, but will likely be in line to make his major league debut in early 2015.
Mon, Jun 16, 2014 07:46:00 AM

Athletics prospect SS Addison Russell returned to action on Sunday, going 2-for-3 with an RBI and walk for High-A Stockton.

The 20-year-old also stole a base in the contest, which is a good sign considering he'd missed the previous two months with a hamstring injury. Russell likely will return to Double-A Midland, where he began the season, once the organization is comfortable with his progress, though the injury and subsequent time on the disabled list has hurt his chances of late-season call-up to the major leagues.
