Addison Russell went 4-for-5 with a home run, two RBI and three runs scored as the Cubs pounded the Marlins 11-1 on Thursday.
The Cubs' cleanup hitter on this day certainly did his fair share of cleaning up, homering in the seventh inning and knocking two more doubles over the course of the game. It's been a difficult year for the 23-year-old, but he's now hitting .297 (14-for-47) with four homers this month. Overall, Russell still has some work to do on his .234/.304/.413 line. Addison Russell's wife Melissa stated through her attorney Wednesday that she will not speak to MLB investigators about recent allegations of domestic violence.

Melissa Russell's friend wrote on social media earlier this month that the Cubs shortstop "physically and mentally abused" his wife during their relationship. Addison has denied those claims and Melissa isn't talking, but the two are in the process of a divorce and there's still the possibility of a suspension under Major League Baseball's domestic violence policy. We just wouldn't expect a quick resolution.

Addison Russell went 2-for-4 with an RBI as the Cubs shut out the Padres on Tuesday evening.

Russell delivered a run-scoring single in the fourth inning that increased the Cubs' lead to 2-0. While his bat has perked up a bit over the past two weeks, he's still hitting a highly-disappointing .224/.297/.386 with six homers and 27 RBI for the year.

Addison Russell delivered a two-run double as part of a six-run uprising in the ninth inning on Friday as the Cubs rallied to beat the Pirates.

Willson Contreras plated the tying run in the ninth, then Jon Jay, Anthony Rizzo and Russell followed with run-scoring hits to put the game away. It was Russell's lone hit in five at-bats on the night. He has had a very rough go of it offensively, hitting .214/.291/.368 with five homers and 25 RBI.

Addison Russell belted his fifth home run of the season in a losing effort against the Mets on Monday night.

Russell tagged Mets' starter Jacob deGrom for the solo shot in the seventh inning, accounting for all of his club's offense in the ballgame. He finished the night 1-for-2 plus a walk. The 23-year-old is in the midst of a rough season at the plate, slashing just .216/.297/.368 with five homers and 21 RBI.

In fact, he's not even at the ballpark. This comes mere hours after MLB began investigating domestic violence claims made against him. ESPN Cubs reporter Jesse Rogers clarified that Russell, who released a statement on Thursday, has not been suspended, rather he's just taking some time to get his personal life in order. Javier Baez will fill in at shortstop and bat seventh Thursday against Rockies right-hander Tyler Chatwood.

Addison Russell released a statement Thursday denying allegations of domestic violence against his wife.

MLB began investigating Russell after his wife's friend claimed on social media that she had been "mentally and physically" abused by him. "Any allegation I have abused my wife is false and hurtful," said Russell. "For the well-being of my family, I’ll have no further comment." As much as Russell would like it to, this story isn't going away anytime soon.

Russell's wife, Melisa, offered hints on social media late Wednesday that the couple was breaking up and in a subsequent comment on one of those posts a friend of Melisa's accused the Cubs shortstop of "mentally and physically abusing her." Gordon Wittenmyer of the Chicago Sun-Times writes that "MLB is investigating based on the posts and is expected to try to interview both the wife and the friend." Russell could be facing a suspension under the league's domestic violence policy, though there probably won't be a resolution to this anytime soon.
