Facing the team that drafted him, Jarred Cosart yielded four runs in 1 2/3 innings Sunday against the Phillies.

Fortunately, the Astros have ditched the idea of Cosart as a closer candidate. He'll be left in the rotation and start the year in Triple-A after a shaky spring that's seemed him amass an 8.22 ERA so far. He hit two batters and walked another today.

The Astros are considering letting Jarred Cosart compete for the closer job in spring training.

General manager Jeff Luhnow floated Cosart's name as a possible candidate at the Winter Meetings following the trade of Wilton Lopez. Cosart has only started in the minors and is viewed as one of the team's top prospects, but his secondary stuff hasn't developed as hoped, so the 'Stros could try his power fastball at the back-end of the pen. Ultimately, he's probably more likely to wind up back in the Triple-A rotation to start the season, but it's something to file away.

Astros purchased the contract of RHP Jarred Cosart from Triple-A Oklahoma City.

Cosart was acquired in the July 2011 trade that sent Hunter Pence to the Phillies. The 22-year-old right-hander had a 3.30 ERA and 92/51 K/BB ratio in 114 2/3 innings this past season between Double-A and Triple-A.

Astros pitching prospect Jarred Cosart has been promoted to Triple-A Oklahoma City.

Part of last year's Hunter Pence deal, Cosart wasn't really challenged at the Double-A level, and the Astros believe he's ready for the next step. Aside from a possible September call up, he isn't likely to reach the majors this season.

Astros prospect Jarred Cosart threw five scoreless innings Sunday for Double-A Corpus Christi.

Cosart was coming off a 17-day layoff because of blister issues. The 21-year-old right-hander has not allowed a run in 9 1/3 innings this season at Double-A and could climb to the Triple-A level by the end of this summer if the good times continue. He was acquired last July from the Phillies in the five-player Hunter Pence trade.

Astros acquired RHPs Jarred Cosart and Josh Zeid, 1B Jonathan Singleton and a player to be named later from the Phillies for OF Hunter Pence and cash considerations.

Cosart immediately becomes the best pitching prospect in the Astros' system. The 21-year-old right-hander has a 3.67 ERA over parts of three seasons in the minor leagues, averaging 8.0 K/9 and 2.9 BB/9. He has a 3.92 ERA with High-A Clearwater this season. Drafted in the 38th round in the 2008 First-Year Player Draft, the six-foot-three right-hander has a fastball that sits in the mid 90s to go along with a solid curveball and developing changeup. There are concerns about whether he'll be able to hold up as a starting pitcher, but he has frontline potential.

Phillies prospect right-hander Jarred Cosart, who was left off the Futures Team roster with a strained elbow, visited Dr. James Andrews last week.

"He got a clean bill of health," said Phillies assistant general manager Chuck LaMar. "Dr. Andrews said it was nothing major. He felt Jarred was fine. We just didn’t want to take any chances. Jarred is back in Florida ready to begin his throwing program." Cosart, 20, is 7-3 with a 3.79 ERA and 1.07 WHIP in 14 starts with Single-A Lakewood this season, averaging 9.7 K/9 and 2.0 BB/9. He was ranked as the organization's No. 8 prospect by Baseball America over the winter, but his stock has increased greatly this season.
