Eury Perez doubled twice and walked Monday as the Braves played an Astros split-squad to a 2-2 tie.

Perez is better defensively than Eric Young Jr. and he's having the better spring of the two thus far, yet Braves writers are seemingly pretty confident that Young will be in center field to begin the season. That's seemingly because Young is a "proven leadoff hitter," and Perez has just 23 major league at-bats to his credit.

Eury Perez went 2-for-3 as the Braves' No. 9 hitter against the Astros on Sunday.

Perez is competing with Eric Young Jr., Todd Cunningham and Zoilo Almonte for the center field job in Melvin Upton Jr.'s absence. He's the best defender in the group, and while he doesn't offer any power at all, he could get on base just enough to be a tolerable stopgap.

MLB.com's Mark Bowman believes Eury Perez is the early favorite to be the Braves' Opening Day center field following Melvin Upton's (foot) injury.

It makes sense, as Eric Young and Zoilo Almonte are both better suited for the corner outfield and Perez is likely a better option than Todd Cunningham. Perez has just 23 plate appearances in the majors but is a career .305/.360/.384 hitter in the minors and has put up gaudy stolen base totals. His speed could give him some fantasy value if he finds his way into the lineup.

Braves claimed OF Eury Perez off waivers from the Yankees.

It's a good landing spot for the 24-year-old, as the Braves are lacking outfield depth following the trades of Justin Upton, Jason Heyward and Evan Gattis. Perez is a career .305/.360/.384 hitter in the minors and has plenty of speed. He should crack the Opening Day roster as a backup.
Jan 23 - 4:06 PM

Yankees designated OF Eury Perez for assignment.

Perez was claimed off waivers from the Nationals at the tail-end of last season. The speedy outfielder has limited experience in the majors but is a career .305/.360/.384 hitter in the minors. The 24-year-old could draw interest on waivers.

Yankees claimed OF Eury Perez off waivers from the Nationals.

Perez was designated for assignment by the Nats last week. He has a promising .310/.354/.411 slash line with 63 stolen bases in 193 career games at Triple-A, so the 24-year-old is worth a shot for the Yanks.

Nationals activated OF Eury Perez from the 60-day disabled list; optioned him to Triple-A Syracuse.

Perez's fractured left toe has healed, but he'll remain at Syracuse instead of joining the big club. The speedy outfielder hasn't appeared in the majors this season.

Nationals recalled OF Eury Perez from Triple-A Syracuse; placed him on the 60-day disabled list with a fractured left toe.

The move was made in order to clear room on the 40-man roster for Greg Dobbs. Perez has been out since late April and isn't not clear how much more time he'll miss.

Nationals optioned OFs Eury Perez and Steven Souza to Triple-A Syracuse and LHP Sammy Solis to Double-A Harrisburg; reassigned INF Mike Fontenot, OF Brian Goodwin and C Koyie Hill to minor league camp.

There are no surprises in this group. Solis could be an option for the Nats eventually as a reliever, though they'll surely want him working as a starter in the minors.

Nationals recalled OF Eury Perez from Triple-A Syracuse.

Perez went 0-for-5 in five games during his brief stint with the big club earlier this year. Perez impressed the Nationals' management with a strong showing in the Grapefruit League and that success carried over to Syracuse, where he slashed .300/.336/.422 with 23 steals in 96 games. The 23-year-old speedster is a career .305 hitter in the minors with 242 steals in 632 games. Perez could potentially provide a few steals down the stretch for NL-only owners, but Washington's outfield is too crowded to expect anything more.

Nationals recalled OF Eury Perez from Triple-A Syracuse.

Perez will provide outfield depth with Jayson Werth (hamstring) on the disabled list. He's hitting .346/.352/.439 with seven stolen bases in his first 23 games at the Triple-A level, but isn't likely to make an impact during his time with the Nationals.

Eury Perez is expected to be recalled by the Nationals when Jayson Werth is officially placed on the disabled list.

Perez impressed the Nationals' management with a strong showing in the Grapefruit League, and that success has carried over to Triple-A Syracuse. He's hitting .346/.352/.439 with a homer, six RBI and seven stolen bases through his first 23 games. With Werth's stint on the DL only expected to last a week or so, Perez may not have much time to make an impact with the big club.
