Ryan Lavarnway has elected free agency.
The former highly-touted prospect has fallen off considerably in recent years, seeing just 13 plate appearances at the big league level over the past two seasons. He still has intriguing power potential, but isn't likely to land anything more than a minor league deal. Oct 21 - 2:10 PM

Athletics sent C Ryan Lavarnway outright to Triple-A Nashville.

Lavarnway couldn't declared free agency if he wanted, but he's chosen to stick in the organization as minor league depth. The 30-year-old is a career .201/.262/.318 hitter over 420 plate appearances at the big league level.
Aug 8 - 3:33 PM

Athletics designated C Ryan Lavarnway for assignment.

This move clears a roster spot for Dustin Garneau who was claimed off of waivers from the Rockies on Friday. As he typically does, Lavarnway could attract some interest on waivers from a team starving for catching depth.
Aug 5 - 2:19 PM

Ryan Lavarnway went 1-for-3 with a two-run double in Friday's loss to the Twins.

Lavarnway picked up a two-run double off Jaime Garcia in the fourth inning. He was just called up on Friday to provide catching depth following Josh Phegley's trip to the disabled list to heal up an oblique injury. The 29-year-old backstop holds a .197/.257/.315 triple-slash at the major league level and offers no fantasy upside.
Jul 29 - 1:54 AM

Athletics purchased the contract of C Ryan Lavarnway from Triple-A Nashville.

Lavarnway was pushed off the 40-man roster earlier this month, but he's needed now with Josh Phegley (oblique) hitting the disabled list. Lavarnway, 29, is a .197/.257/.315 career hitter in the majors.
Jul 27 - 9:52 AM

Athletics sent C Ryan Lavarnway outright to Triple-A Nashville.

Lavarnway was designated for assignment by Oakland last week and passed through waivers unclaimed. The 29-year-old catcher is a .197/.257/.315 career hitter over parts of six seasons at the major league level.
Jul 12 - 2:16 PM

Athletics designated C Ryan Lavarnway for assignment.

The 29-year-old former top prospect continues to bounce around the league. There's a chance he could attract some interest on waivers, otherwise he'll continue to function as catching depth at Triple-A Nashville.
Jul 8 - 2:56 PM

Athletics recalled C Ryan Lavarnway from Triple-A Nashville.

Lavarnway will give the A's a little bench depth while Josh Phegley is on paternity leave. Lavarnway, 29, last appeared in a major league game in 2015.
Jul 5 - 12:42 PM

Athletics optioned C Ryan Lavarnway to Triple-A Nashville.

Lavarnway did well in limited action this spring, producing a stellar .421 average over 19 Cactus League at-bats. He also spent a couple of weeks playing for Team Israel in the World Baseball Classic. The Athletics are going with Stephen Vogt and Josh Phegley at catcher to begin the year.
Apr 1 - 10:23 PM

Athletics signed C Ryan Lavarnway to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.

Lavarnway opened the 2016 campaign as a member of the Braves, saw his release in mid-May and was subsequently signed by the Blue Jays near the end of that month. He did not receive a major league at-bat with either Atlanta or Toronto. The 29-year-old backstop slashed a paltry .266/.351/.384 over 331 at-bats while splitting time between the Braves' Triple-A affiliate and the Blue Jays' Double-A one.

Blue Jays signed C Ryan Lavarnway to a minor league contract.

He's been assigned to Double-A New Hampshire. Lavarnway was released by the Braves earlier this month after batting .276/.336/.357 for Triple-A Gwinnett. Lavarnway is now 28 and is merely organizational depth.

Braves released C Ryan Lavarnway.

He became expendable when the Braves acquired Anthony Recker from Cleveland earlier this week. Before getting axed, Lavarnway was hitting a respectable .276 in 25 games for Triple-A Gwinnett. He'll find work elsewhere as minor league depth.

Braves re-signed C Ryan Lavarnway to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.

Lavarnway played in 27 games with the Braves this past season while batting .227/.311/.394 with two home runs and six RBI over 74 plate appearances. The 28-year-old has a chance to serve as A.J. Pierzynski's backup if the Braves decide to give Christian Bethancourt some time in the minors.

Braves sent C Ryan Lavarnway outright to Triple-A Gwinnett.

The 28-year-old backstop appeared in 37 big league games between the Orioles and Braves in 2015, hitting a meager .191/.283/.319 with two homers, six RBI and a 28/12 K/BB ratio. The former top prospect may never live him to the massive hype that once surrounded him, but he still provides solid depth behind the plate.
Sat, Oct 10, 2015 08:41:00 AM

Ryan Lavarnway went 2-for-4 with a solo home run in Sunday's loss to the Cubs.

Lavarnway's solo home run in the fifth inning was his second of the season. He started the year with the Orioles, but they designated him for assignment in late May, at which point the Braves scooped him up. In limited spot duty, he's hit .257/.358/.489 with two homers and six RBI. The 27-year-old catcher doesn't see enough at-bats (just 47 with the Braves thus far) for fantasy relevance.
