Red Sox optioned C/DH Ryan Lavarnway to Triple-A Pawtucket.

Lavarnway didn't receive any at-bats in his few days with the big club. He's being sent down to make room for the return of John Lackey, who will start Sunday.
Apr 28 - 8:43 AM

Rob Bradford of WEEI.com reports that Ryan Lavarnway will be sent back to Triple-A Pawtucket when John Lackey is activated from the disabled list on Sunday.

Lavarnway didn't receive any at-bats during his brief stay in Boston. He should be given a shot later this summer.
Apr 27 - 11:35 PM

Red Sox recalled C Ryan Lavarnway from Triple-A Pawtucket.

Lavarnway is a .172/.230/.286 career hitter in the major leagues, but he has monstrous numbers on the farm. He could see some action against left-handed pitchers.
Apr 25 - 2:27 PM

The Red Sox are expected to promote Ryan Lavarnway prior to Thursday's game.

He'll take Alfredo Aceves' roster spot. Lavarnway is batting .310/.423/.452 with a homer and seven RBI this season at Triple-A Pawtucket. He could see some starts against left-handed pitching but might be sent back down on Sunday when John Lackey is activated from the DL.
Apr 24 - 9:01 PM

Red Sox optioned C Ryan Lavarnway to Triple-A Pawtucket; reassigned RHPs Anthony Carter and Jose de la Torre to minor league camp.

The Red Sox are set with Jarrod Saltalamacchia and David Ross behind the plate, so cutting Lavarnway doesn't come as a surprise. The 25-year-old batted just .136 (6-for-44) with one double in 16 games this spring.
Mar 27 - 9:39 AM

Ryan Lavarnway went 0-for-5 on Friday to lower his spring average to .133.

Lavarnway's struggles might have something to do with the fact that he was essentially told there was no spot for him before camp even started. That said, he certainly could have helped his chances of getting traded to a team that would use him had he performed well this spring. He doesn't have much of anything left to prove in Triple-A, but that's where he's bound unless Jarrod Saltalamacchia or David Ross gets hurt.
Mar 15 - 4:39 PM

Red Sox GM Ben Cherington said he doesn't expect to carry Ryan Lavarnway on the Opening Day roster.

It's not unexpected news, but serves to confirm what we already knew was going to be the case. Barring a trade, the Red Sox are set to open 2013 with Jarrod Saltalamacchia and David Ross as their catchers. After struggling with a .157/.211/.248 batting line in 46 games this past season, Lavarnway will look to get more seasoning in the minors.
Feb 9 - 12:03 PM

While there had been some speculation to the contrary, the Red Sox are unlikely to shift Ryan Lavarnway to first base to allow them to carry all three of their catchers.

The David Ross signing led to speculation that Lavarnway might change positions. But the Red Sox aren't going to mess with that for now. It's possible that he -- or Jarrod Saltalamacchia -- will be traded.

Ryan Lavarnway smashed a two-run double in the seventh inning on Tuesday night, helping the Red Sox to a 7-5 victory over the Rays.

Lavarnway is still hitting just .170/.237/.283 through his first 106 at-bats, but he'll likely continue to draw starts at DH over the final two weeks of the season and could hold value in AL-only fantasy formats.

Ryan Lavarnway homered and drove home four runs, leading the Red Sox to an 8-5 victory over the Blue Jays in Toronto on Friday night.

He finished the night 1-for-3 plus a walk with a run scored and four RBI. His three-run blast off Aaron Laffey evened the score at 3-3 in the fourth inning. He then added a sacrifice fly to tack on a valuable insurance run in the eighth. He's struggled mightily at the plate this season, hitting .165/.235/.275 with two homers and seven RBI through his first 91 at-bats.

Ryan Lavarnway will start behind the plate Thursday night against the Twins and catch Jon Lester.

It's the first start of the season for Lavarnway, who was called up from Triple-A Pawtucket on Wednesday. He's an interesting bat, but will likely be sent back down to the minors once David Ortiz (Achilles) is ready to return from the disabled list.

Red Sox recalled C Ryan Lavarnway from Triple-A Pawtucket.

Lavarnway was batting .295/.376/.439 with eight home runs and 43 RBI in 83 games this year at the Triple-A level. He possesses serious power potential but probably won't play enough this time around on the major league roster to warrant fantasy attention.

Red Sox optioned C Ryan Lavarnway to Triple-A Pawtucket.

Lavarnway posted a scorching .429/.488/.486 batting line this spring, but with Jarrod Saltalamacchia and Kelly Shoppach locked into roster spots, there just wasn't room for him. He'll play every day at Pawtucket.

The Boston Globe suggests Ryan Lavarnway should be a candidate for the Opening Day roster.

Lavarnway has projectable power, but can’t manage a staff or call a game. The question is whether the Red Sox believe the Jarrod Saltalamacchia-Kelly Shoppach tandem will be better than a Saltalamacchia-Lavarnway tandem. Lavarnway is batting .429/.469/.464 in 31 plate appearances this spring.
