Red Sox activated 1B Ryan Lavarnway from the 60-day disabled list; optioned him to Triple-A Pawtucket.

Lavarnway is finally recovered from hamate bone surgery, but he'll get a little more time in the minors before potentially joining the Red Sox as a September callup. The 27-year-old is a .205/.254/.322 career hitter in 295 plate appearances at the major league level.

Ryan Lavarnway (wrist) went 3-for-5 with two RBI Thursday as he resumed a rehab assignment with Triple-A Pawtucket.

Making his way back from hamate bone surgery, Lavarnway tried to begin a rehab assignment late last month before shutting things down. He shouldn't need much time before being ready for activation, but he's no guarantee to be added to the big league roster.
Aug 8 - 8:25 AM

Red Sox transferred 1B Ryan Lavarnway from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day disabled list.

Lavarnway underwent surgery earlier this week for a broken left hamate bone. He's expected to be sidelined for 4-6 weeks and will likely be optioned to Triple-A Pawtucket once he returns to full health.
Jun 5 - 1:55 PM

Ryan Lavarnway underwent surgery Tuesday in Cleveland for his broken left hamate bone.

Lavarnway is expected to be out 4-6 weeks and will likely be optioned back to Triple-A once he's healthy.
Jun 3 - 5:38 PM

Ryan Lavarnway will miss at least the next 4-6 weeks due to a broken hamate bone in his left wrist.

Surgery to remove the bone is being scheduled. Lavarnway was only up with the big club for a couple days but suffered the injury on a swing during Thursday's contest. He's hit .265/.357/.346 with two homers and 11 RBI in 44 games this season at the Triple-A level.
May 30 - 3:49 PM

Red Sox placed 1B/C Ryan Lavarnway on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left wrist.

The results of his MRI haven't been revealed yet, but obviously the injury is bad enough to necessitate a trip to the disabled list. More should be known about a potential timetable for Lavarnway later Friday. Alex Hassan has replaced him on the roster.
May 30 - 2:02 PM

Ryan Lavarnway will undergo an MRI on his left wrist Friday.

Lavarnway, who was just called up Monday, injured the wrist during Thursday's game. Obviously more will be known about his timetable when the results of the exam are revealed.
May 29 - 10:38 PM

Ryan Lavarnway left Thursday's game versus the Braves with left wrist soreness.

Lavarnway was making his first career start at first base but had to leave for a pinch-hitter in the fifth inning. It's poor timing, as he would be in line to see some at-bats with Mike Napoli (finger) on the disabled list.
May 29 - 8:57 PM

Red Sox recalled C Ryan Lavarnway from Triple-A Pawtucket.

Lavarnway was hitting .265/.357/.346 with two homers and 11 RBI in 44 games this season at the Triple-A level. He owns a weak .585 career OPS in the majors and probably won't play enough to carry fantasy relevance anyway. Lavarnway will back up catcher and first base.
May 26 - 9:56 AM

Red Sox optioned C Ryan Lavarnway to Triple-A Pawtucket.

Lavarnway did his best to make the club this spring, slashing .289/.357/.474 in 38 at-bats, but the club is set with veterans A.J. Pierzynski and David Ross behind the dish. Lavarnway could be converted to a first baseman at Triple-A to alleviate the logjam the Sox have at backstop in their organization.
Mar 28 - 6:42 PM

Sean McAdam of CSNNE.com reports that Ryan Lavarnway is "being shopped around" by the Red Sox.

There's no room for Lavarnway in Boston with A.J. Pierzynski and David Ross on the roster and no room for him at Triple-A Pawtucket with Christian Vazquez and Daniel Butler expected to handle the catching duties there. If Lavarnway does wind up back at Pawtucket, he's expected to see most of his playing time at first base and DH.

Mar 17 - 3:05 PM

Ryan Lavarnway went 2-for-2 with a double as the Red Sox beat Northeastern University 5-2 in seven innings Thursday.

By signing A.J. Pierzynski and retaining Mike Napoli and Mike Carp, the Red Sox left Lavarnway on the outside looking in once again. He has an option year left, so he'll probably head back to Triple-A Pawtucket for another go. However, if someone wants to flip a prospect for him, he should be available. The Red Sox have better defensive catchers on the way, and Lavarnway probably won't hit enough to be more than a stopgap first baseman or DH.
Feb 27 - 4:10 PM

Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe reports that Ryan Lavarnway will work at first base in addition to catching during spring training.

The more versatility that the 26-year-old can display during spring training, the better his chances will be of cracking the Opening Day roster. He has intriguing offensive potential, especially with the catcher eligibility, but holds little value in mixed leagues without consistent at-bats.
Jan 31 - 9:44 PM

Red Sox recalled C Ryan Lavarnway from Triple-A Pawtucket.

Lavarnway has seen sporadic time with the Red Sox this season, hitting .283/.323/.383 with eight RBI in 60 at-bats. He'll provide additional depth behind the plate and another right-handed power option off the bench.
