Athletics activated 1B Nate Freiman from the 15-day disabled list, optioned to Triple-A Nashville.
With the emergence of Mark Canha as a legitimate bat off the bench and backup at first base, Freiman became expendable. He'll continue to serve as organizational depth for the A's while playing every day at Triple-A. May 9 - 1:24 PM

Date:

Nate Freiman (back) will begin a rehab assignment at Triple-A Nashville on Monday.

It's not clear how many rehab games he'll need, but Freiman isn't a given to be added to be big league roster once ready. He's missed the last two months with a lumbar muscle strain.
May 4 - 6:36 PM

Nate Freiman (back) could start a rehab assignment next week.

Freiman had four at-bats and played first base in extended spring training Wednesday as he works back from a lumbar muscle strain. Assuming the rehab goes well, Freiman should be back with the A's in mid-May.

Nate Freiman (back) played four innings in an extended spring training game Wednesday.

Athletics placed 1B Nate Freiman on the 15-day disabled list with a lumbar muscle strain.

Freiman's suffering from a back strain and has not yet been cleared for baseball activity. Barring setbacks, it's possible he'll return by mid-April, but this is difficult to gauge until he tests the back a bit more.
Apr 4 - 8:02 PM

Nate Freiman (back) is starting to feel better after undergoing aggressive treatment on his back strain.

He still hasn't been cleared for baseball activity. With Mark Canha expected to make the Opening Day roster, Freiman may have been squeezed out of a roster spot regardless. He isn't expected to return until mid-April.
Mar 28 - 11:31 AM

Nate Freiman has been diagnosed with a strained back muscle and could be out for two weeks.

That's not gonna help his cause for the A's Opening Day roster. Mark Canha, a Rule 5 Draft pick this past December, probably already had the edge on Freiman anyway.

Athletics recalled 1B Nate Freiman from Low-A Beloit.

Fremina owns a weak .241 batting average and .293 on-base percentage this year in the majors, but the big 27-year-old has pretty good pop and will give the A's some right-handed power off the bench for the stretch run.

Athletics optioned 1B Nate Freiman to Low-A Beloit.

The move clears a roster spot for Drew Pomeranz, who will make a spot start Wednesday against the Astros. Freiman has hit .241/.293/.556 this year in the majors. He'll be back up when rosters expand in September.

Nate Freiman clobbered a pair of home runs in a losing effort against the Braves on Sunday night.

Nate Freiman went 1-for-2 with a double and walk as the A's topped the Blue Jays 4-1 Thursday in a game played under official protest of Oakland skipper Bob Melvin.

The drama began in the second inning, when Anthony Gose grounded to Freiman with the bases loaded and one out. Freiman attempted to tag Munenori Kawasaki as he ran from first to second -- first-base umpire Vic Carapazza signaled a missed tag -- and then threw to Stephen Vogt for a force at home. Blue Jays manager John Gibbons won a challenge of the ruling that Kawasaki had been tagged, making Edwin Encarnacion safe at home since the force play no longer was in effect. Melvin lodged a formal complaint which was relayed up to the press box. Fortunately, the run didn't affect the outcome of the game.
