The move clears a spot on the 40-man roster. Herrmann, 28, underwent Tommy John surgery earlier this month and will miss the entire 2013 season.

Frank Herrmann underwent Tommy John surgery on his right elbow on Wednesday and will miss the entire 2013 season.

It's a tough blow for Herrmann, who made 15 relief appearances with the Indians last season. The 28-year-old will now have to set his sights on getting ready for 2014.

Frank Herrmann (elbow) is scheduled to see Dr. David Altchek in New York next week.

Herrmann is still in the process of gathering information before deciding whether to undergo Tommy John surgery. Usually when this process begins, surgery is the end result. He would obviously miss the 2013 season if an operation is required.

Herrmann is currently gathering more opinions before he makes a decision. The right-hander is obviously hoping to avoid an operation that would sideline him for all of the 2013 campaign.

Frank Herrmann has been shut down with a sore right elbow.

The Indians currently aren't sure how long he'll be sidelined. Obviously, the odds that Herrmann breaks camp as part of the bullpen aren't too good now.

The Harvard grad posted a 4.76 ERA and 3/3 K/BB ratio in 5 2/3 innings over four appearances earlier this season for the Tribe. He'll work the middle innings.

The move clears a spot for 1B Matt LaPorta. In the bigs a little more than two weeks, Herrmann posted a 4.76 ERA and 3/3 K/BB ratio in 5 2/3 innings over four appearances. He'll likely be back once rosters are expanded.

Indians recalled RHP Frank Herrmann from Triple-A Columbus.

He'll take the place of Jose Lopez on the active roster. Herrmann, who made 80 appearances with the Indians from 2010-2011, has a 4.28 ERA and 53/18 K/BB ratio over 48 1/3 innings at the Triple-A level this year. He'll pitch in middle relief.

Herrmann was sent down just nine days ago. In 4 1/3 innings of work earlier this season, he was unproductive, allowing seven baserunners and five runs (four earned). He did manage to tally seven strikeouts, however, and could fare a little better the second time around after being serviceable in 2010.

Well, that was quick. Herrmann was just called up from the minors Tuesday, but didn't make an appearance during his brief stay. He has a 3.38 ERA over seven appearances with the big club this season.

Herrmann will take the place of the injured Carlos Carrasco on the Indians' active roster. The 26-year-old right-hander was sent to the minors earlier this month after allowing five runs -- four earned -- on six hits over his first four appearances this season. He'll contribute in middle relief.
