Phillies pitching prospect Jesse Biddle returned to game action Saturday, allowing a run on one hit and one walk over two frames for the Gulf Coast League Phillies.
Biddle has been on the temporary inactive list at Double-A Reading for nearly a month as the Phillies sought to give the struggling hurler a mental break. He'll throw another outing for the GCL Phillies before possibly rejoining Reading. Biddle has posted a 5.03 ERA in 15 starts this season. Jul 27 - 10:23 AM

The Phillies have placed pitching prospect Jesse Biddle on the temporary inactive list at Double-A Reading.

Biddle has been rocked with a 12.64 ERA over his last four starts. He's not injured, but it sounds like the top prospect just needs a mental break. "Nothing feels fluid on the mound, nothing feels natural," said Biddle. "I’m miserable out there. I’m very unhappy. And I don’t know why."
Jun 26 - 6:38 PM

Phillies prospect left-hander Jesse Biddle walked six and allowed three hits in 3 1/3 innings for Double-A Reading on Wednesday.

Biddle has a 6.50 ERA and 1.889 WHIP over his last four starts, during which opposing batters are putting up a .310/.414/.493 line. He has struggled in his second season with Double-A Reading, putting up a 4.06 ERA and a 1.398 WHIP. Biddle has been more hittable this season (8.1 H/9, up from 6.8 H/9 in 2013) and is still walking too many batters (4.5 BB/9) while experiencing a drop in his strikeout rate (9.0 K/9 from 10.0 K/9).
Jun 12 - 12:11 PM

Phillies left-handed pitching prospect Jesse Biddle struck out seven in six innings on Wednesday, allowing one unearned run for Double-A Reading.

Biddle walked four batters and allowed two hits, both of which were doubles. His inconsistency is maddening, but he has a 3.20 ERA with a 1.224 WHIP. He could be in line for a promotion to Triple-A Lehigh Valley, and could see time in Philadelphia later in the season.
May 15 - 9:24 AM

Phillies left-handed pitching prospect Jesse Biddle allowed eight hits, three walks, and one hit batsman, allowing five runs (three earned) on Friday for Double-A Reading.

Biddle is spending his second consecutive season in Reading, so the fact that he is struggling is particularly troubling. He struck out six batters, but threw only 57% (55/96) of his pitches for strikes. He has 52 strikeouts in 44 2/3 innings, but he has allowed 38 hits and 18 walks, leading to a 1.254 WHIP. Biddle is still the best pitching prospect in the Phillies system, but his command woes have taken much of the sheen off the apple.
May 10 - 12:02 PM

Phillies left-handed pitching prospect Jesse Biddle walked five in four innings, allowing six runs (four earned) on Monday night.

Biddle's previous two outings were borderline dominant, so his clunker of a start can be viewed as an aberration. However, Biddle career 4.3 BB/9 rate is troubling and he will need to improve his command before he has a chance of being successful in the major leagues. Biddle has thrown 361 of his 588 (61.4%) pitches for strikes in 2014. Biddle is in line to get promoted to Triple-A Lehigh Valley in the early summer, and could get a September call-up.
Apr 29 - 10:41 AM

Phillies left-handed pitching prospect Jesse Biddle struck out 10 batters in seven innings on Wednesday for Double-A Reading.

Biddle allowed two hits and walked one batter in his best start of the season. Biddle threw 111 pitches, inducing seven groundouts, six flyouts, zero line drives, and two popups. He sports a 2.86 ERA and a 12.1 K/9 rate, while batters are hitting .213/.265/.352 off him. Biddle is rapidly climbing the Phillies pitching depth chart, and could make his appearance with his hometown Phillies later this season.
Apr 24 - 8:27 AM

Phillies left-handed pitching prospect Jesse Biddle struck out 11 batters in 7 innings on Friday, allowing two runs (one earned), two hits, and one walk.

Biddle struggled in his first three starts in his return to Double-A but put together a solid outing. Biddle still looks on track to reach the majors later in 2014, but he may not make his debut until 2015 as the Phillies tendency to move prospects slowly could have an impact.
Apr 19 - 11:11 AM

Phillies prospect LHP Jesse Biddle allowed four runs on six hits and a walk while striking out six batters in seven innings on Tuesday for Double-A Reading.

Biddle, 22, is back in Double-A after posting a 3.64 ERA and 154/82 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 138 1/3 innings last year at the level. So far this season, the left-hander has allowed four runs in back-to-back starts, though his outing on Tuesday was significantly better after he lasted only 3 1/3 innings last week in his season debut. Biddle could theoretically reach the majors later this season, but he'll first need to improve his overall command and consistency.
Apr 9 - 1:20 PM

Phillies left-handed pitching prospect Jesse Biddle will return to Double-A to open 2014.

With Cole Hamels (biceps) returning later this month and the late signing of A.J. Burnett, Biddle will not begin the 2014 campaign in Triple-A as was originally expected. The 22-year-old had a solid 2013 at the Double-A level (3.64 ERA and 10 K/9) despite dealing with whooping cough and plantar fasciitis. Jonathan Pettibone is likely first on the list for a minor league call-up if the Phillies need an emergency starter this summer.
Apr 3 - 10:52 AM

Phillies reassigned LHP Jesse Biddle to minor league camp.

The No. 27 pick from the 2010 draft is also Baseball Prospectus' No. 94 prospect in the game. He went 5-14 with Double-A Reading last year, but that was mostly an indicator of his teammates, as Biddle posted a 3.64 ERA and 154/82 K/BB rate over 138 1/3 innings. The 22-year-old could potentially work his way up to the big leagues with another big showing on the farm in 2014.
Mar 8 - 6:47 PM

Phillies prospect LHP Jesse Biddle lasted only 1 1/3 innings on Sunday, allowing five earned runs on five hits and six walks with two strikeouts.

That marks back-to-back poor outings for the 21-year-old, as he allowed four earned runs on three hits and three walks in just 2/3 innings on July 23. After a lights-out start to the season Biddle has struggled with his command recently at Double-A Reading, posting a 4.80 ERA with 41 hits allowed and a 45/30 K/BB ratio over his last 45 innings. That said, the southpaw still has a cool 3.89 overall ERA, 6.7 H/9 and 9.9 K/9 in 106 1/3 total frames. He is expected to reach the majors at some point during the 2014 season.

Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro said Jesse Biddle is not being considered as an option to replace Roy Halladay (shoulder) in the rotation.

The club's top prospect, Biddle has posted a 2.56 ERA and 0.92 WHIP with 40 strikeouts over his first 31 2/3 innings at Double-A Reading this season. The 21-year-old has made just six starts above A-ball, though, so the Phils want him to get more seasoning. Adam Morgan and Tyler Cloyd are the top candidates to replace Halladay, though Amaro is also weighing options outside the organization.

Phillies prospect left-hander Jesse Biddle struck out 16 over seven shutout frames Monday night with Double-A Reading.

Biddle took a perfect game into the seventh inning, but ended up allowing one hit and two walks. The 2010 first-round pick has a 3.14 ERA in pro ball, including a 2.16 ERA and 30/9 K/BB ratio in 25 innings across his first four starts this season. Baseball America ranked the 21-year-old as the game's No. 89 prospect during the offseason.

Phillies agreed to terms with first-round pick LHP Jesse Biddle.

Biddle, who was selected 27th overall, is believed to have signed somewhere around the slot recommendation of $1.16 million. The hard-throwing left-hander is expected to join the rookie league GCL Phillies next week.
