Cubs re-assigned OFs Albert Almora, John Andreoli, Matt Murton, Juan Perez, INFs Kristopher Negron and Jesus Guzman, RHPs Ryan Williams, Jean Machi and Brandon Gomes to minor league camp.
There's a decent amount of major league service time in this group, but none of the cuts are terribly surprising. Mar 25 - 1:41 PM

Cubs signed RHP Brandon Gomes to a minor league contract.

The deal presumably includes an invitation to spring training. Gomes recently elected free agency after being designated for assignment by the Rays. The 31-year-old had a 4.27 ERA and 44/15 K/BB ratio over 59 innings this past season and will provide some bullpen depth in Cubs' camp.

Brandon Gomes has elected free agency.

Gomes, who was designated for assignment last week, chose free agency after refusing an outright assignment to Triple-A Durham. The 31-year-old is coming off a 4.27 ERA and 44/15 K/BB ratio over 59 innings this past season and will hope to find a bullpen job elsewhere.

Rays sent RHP Brandon Gomes outright to Triple-A Durham.

Gomes cleared waivers after being designated for assignment last week. He has three days to decide whether to accept the minor league assignment or refuse and test free agency. The 31-year-old posted a 4.27 ERA and 44/15 K/BB ratio over 59 innings this past season.

Rays designated RHP Brandon Gomes for assignment.

The 31-year-old right-hander becomes a casualty of the talent being too deep in the Rays organization. He was a respectable member of their bullpen in 2015, posting a 4.27 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 44/15 K/BB ratio over 59 innings. If he elects free agency, he shouldn't have a problem landing on his feet elsewhere.

Brandon Gomes earned his first career save, holding the Yankees scoreless in the ninth inning of Tuesday's 6-3 victory.

Gomes got two quick outs, then saw the Yankees' next two hitters reach base on a single and a James Loney fielding error. But the right-hander bounced back to get Brett Gardner on a fly out to end the game. Regular closer Brad Boxberger had pitched in back-to-back games and blew Monday's save in ugly fashion, but will continue to handle save opportunities the rest of the way.

Rays purchased the contract of RHP Brandon Gomes from Triple-A Durham.

Grant Balfour, owed $7 million, was removed from the 40-man roster on Saturday night after getting rocked by the Yankees. Gomes will take that spot and pitch in a middle relief role. The 30-year-old right-hander showed good promise this spring in the Grapefruit League.

Rays reassigned RHPs Brandon Gomes, Jhan Marinez, and RHP Jim Miller, LHPs Everett Teaford and Jordan Norberto, OFs Corey Brown and Joey Butler, and C Mayo Acosta to minor league camp.

Rays manager Kevin Cash said the toughest choice was with Gomes. The 30-year-old allowed just one run over 9 2/3 innings of work this spring while striking out 15 batters and walking none.

Rays designated RHP Brandon Gomes for assignment.

The Rays needed some space on the 40-man roster following the three-team deal with the Padres and Nationals. Gomes, 30, holds a 4.17 ERA with 100 strikeouts over 108 career relief innings. He could draw some interest on waivers.

Brandon Gomes pitched a pair of hitless innings in relief Sunday against the Red Sox.

Gomes has struck out 12 in nine scoreless innings this spring, so he should have a bullpen spot nailed down. He had a 6.52 ERA in the majors last year, but he struck out 29 in 19 1/3 innings. Overall, he has a 4.38 ERA in 81 relief appearances as a major leaguer.
