Don't expect Evan Longoria or Jeff Keppinger, both rehabbing in the minor leagues, to be ready by that point. Gomes posted a cool 2.92 ERA and 32/16 K/BB ratio in 37 innings last season as a rookie member of the Tampa Bay bullpen, but he has been ineffective in short spurts this season in the bigs. He'll remain on the Durham-to-Tampa Bay-and-back shuttle all season long.

Brandon Gomes will throw his first bullpen session Tuesday since undergoing November back surgery.

If all goes well and Gomes is able to avoid setbacks over the next month-plus, he should be fully healthy by the opening of the 2012 regular season. The 27-year-old righty posted a 2.92 ERA and 32/16 K/BB ratio across 37 innings last year as a rookie and will be competing for a middle relief job in Rays camp this spring.
