Rays recalled RHP Brandon Gomes from Triple-A Durham.

Gomes pitched well in spring training but ended up being one of the last cuts. He'll slide into a middle relief role with Jeff Niemann (shoulder) landing on the disabled list.

Rays optioned RHP Brandon Gomes to Triple-A Durham.

Gomes was impressive this spring, allowing just two runs over nine innings while striking out nine and walking none, but it wasn't enough to win a spot on the Opening Day roster. The 28-year-old right-hander will serve as bullpen depth in the minors.

Rays recalled RHP Brandon Gomes from Triple-A Durham.

The 28-year-old righty will be available out of the Tampa Bay bullpen on Sunday. He posted a 6.94 ERA and a 1.97 WHIP in 11 2/3 innings with the Rays earlier this season.

Rays optioned RHP Brandon Gomes to Triple-A Durham.

Gomes was only up for Sunday's game, a reinforcement following Alex Cobb's early exit Saturday with a right knee contusion. He's pitched poorly at the major league level this year, but will undoubtedly be back in Tampa Bay later this summer.

Rays optioned RHP Brandon Gomes to Triple-A Durham.

He was down as the Rays prepare to add Jeremy Hellickson (shoulder) and Kyle Farnsworth (elbow) back to the active roster Saturday. Gomes has an ugly 6.94 ERA and 11/11 K/BB ratio over 11 2/3 innings at the major league level this year.

Rays recalled RHP Brandon Gomes from Triple-A Durham.

Gomes posted a 2.92 ERA and 32/16 K/BB ratio in 37 innings last season with the Rays but has been unable to find similar success this year, holding a 5.87 mark. He'll work the middle innings.

Rays optioned RHP Brandon Gomes to Triple-A Durham.

Tampa Bay wants an extra position player on the roster and will recall one prior to Tuesday's game in Washington. Don't expect Evan Longoria or Jeff Keppinger, both rehabbing in the minor leagues, to be ready by that point. Gomes posted a cool 2.92 ERA and 32/16 K/BB ratio in 37 innings last season as a rookie member of the Tampa Bay bullpen, but he has been ineffective in short spurts this season in the bigs. He'll remain on the Durham-to-Tampa Bay-and-back shuttle all season long.

Rays recalled RHP Brandon Gomes from Triple-A Durham.

He's taking the roster spot of Luke Scott (back). Gomes posted a 7.71 ERA and 2.14 WHIP over five appearances earlier this season with the Rays and will work in middle relief.

Rays optioned RHP Brandon Gomes to Triple-A Durham.

It's no surprise, as Gomes was off to a rough start with a 7.71 ERA and 2.14 WHIP over his first five appearances. He figures to be up with the Rays at some point again later this season, though.

Rays recalled RHP Brandon Gomes from Triple-A Durham.

Gomes posted a cool 2.92 ERA and 32/16 K/BB ratio in 37 innings last season as a rookie member of the Tampa Bay bullpen. If he can pitch that well again, the 27-year-old right-hander could be up for a long while.

Rays optioned RHP Brandon Gomes to Triple-A Durham.

Gomes registered a promising 2.92 ERA and 32/16 K/BB ratio in 37 innings last year as a rookie, but the Rays have a talented pitching staff and he failed to stand out this spring. The 27-year-old will be first in line for a call-up if there's an injury or ineffectiveness problem in the Tampa Bay 'pen.

Brandon Gomes (back) is scheduled to make his Grapefruit League debut this Sunday.

Gomes, still in recovery mode from November back surgery, is about a week behind the other relievers in Rays camp. But he should be able to play catch-up between now and the start of the regular season. The 27-year-old right-hander posted a 2.92 ERA and 32/16 K/BB ratio in 37 innings last year as a rookie.

Brandon Gomes will throw his first bullpen session Tuesday since undergoing November back surgery.

If all goes well and Gomes is able to avoid setbacks over the next month-plus, he should be fully healthy by the opening of the 2012 regular season. The 27-year-old righty posted a 2.92 ERA and 32/16 K/BB ratio across 37 innings last year as a rookie and will be competing for a middle relief job in Rays camp this spring.
