Indians purchased the contract of INF Juan Diaz from Double-A Akron.

The move protects him from MLB's Rule 5 Draft in December. Diaz, who turns 23 next month, was acquired from the Mariners last year in the Russell Branyan deal. The Dominican shortstop batted .255/.310/.368 with nine homers, 60 RBI, nine stolen bases and a .678 OPS over 569 plate appearances this season at the Double-A level.

Indians acquired SS Juan Diaz and OF Ezequiel Carrera from the Mariners for 1B Russell Branyan.

Diaz is still very raw, but at 21 years of age he is quite a nice get for the 34-year-old Branyan. The young shortstop was batting .295 with a 779 OPS, seven home runs and 41 RBI in 254 at-bats at high Single-A High Desert. He will start his Indians career with Single-A Kinston.
