Nunez batted .279/.336/.517 with 29 home runs and 96 RBI in 124 games last season at High-A Stockton, but the 20-year-old third base prospect went 3-for-16 (.188) with eight strikeouts this spring in Cactus League play. He's a few years away from the major leagues.

Athletics purchased the contract of 3B Renato Nunez from High-A Stockton.

Nunez is now protected from December's Rule 5 Draft. The 20-year-old third baseman hit .279/.336/.517 with 29 home runs and 96 RBI in 124 games this past season in High-A ball. He could have a very bright future.

Athletics third base prospect Renato Nunez went 2-for-6 with a double and a home run for High-A Stockton on Saturday.

Nunez has a .285/.345/.558 line with 24 doubles, two triples, and 27 home runs in 2014. His K:BB remains an ugly 83:29 line, which underscores his aggressive approach. Nunez has developed nicely since the Athletics gave him a $2.2 million signing bonus back in 2010. He is likely to spend the rest of 2014 in Stockton, then open 2015 with Double-A Midland.

Athletics prospect 3B Renato Nunez went 1-for-3 with a home run and two RBI on Tuesday for High-A Stockton.

Nunez has been crushing the ball since the beginning of June, with a .328/.396/.683 batting line, 17 home runs, 12 doubles and 49 RBI in 47 games. On the season, the 20-year-old has posted a .905 OPS with 26 homers, 23 doubles and 75 RBI in 95 games at Stockton. Though his power profiles nicely at the hot corner, Nunez's swing-and-miss tendencies, highlighted by an 81-29 strikeout-to-walk ratio this season, could lead to struggles against more advanced pitching once he's promoted to Double-A.

Athletics prospect third baseman Renato Nunez went 3-for-4 with a home run and a walk for High-A Stockton on Monday, raising his season line to .287/.350/.562.

The 20-year old Nunez has been raking since the beginning of June, putting up a .340/.412/.712 line with 11 doubles, one triple, and 15 home runs. He profiles as a solid major league starter with some power and below-average defense, which may force him to first base in the future.

Athletics third base prospect Renato Nunez went 2-for-4 with two home runs for High-A Stockton on Monday.

Nunez has been on fire over the past three weeks, hitting .408/.489/.908 with five doubles and 11 home runs over 20 games. The 20-year old Venezuelan slugger could be in line for a promotion to Double-A Midland in the next few weeks.

Athletics third base prospect Renato Nunez with 2-for-5 with a home run and a walk for High-A Stockton on Friday, raising his season line to .287/.356/.545.

The 20-year old Venezuelan slugger has been white-hot since June 20, hitting .436/.516/.945 with four doubles and eight home runs in 14 games, picking up four walks and being hit by pitches five times while striking out only nine times. Nunez lacks all-star potential, but he is clearly too good for the California League and could see time in the Double-A Texas League before the season is over.

Athletics prospect 3B Renato Nunez had another big game Sunday, going 2-for-4 with a pair of solo home runs for High-A Stockton.

The 20-year-old has been on a tear this month, batting .368/.455/.736 with seven home runs, nine doubles and 18 RBI in 23 games. Six of his home runs have come in the past 10 games, pushing his total to 16 for the season, and he's batting a robust .462 during that span. On the year, Nunez is batting .282/.349/.533 with 38 extra-base hits, 44 RBI and a 65-22 strikeout-to-walk ratio through 71 games.

Nunez went 10-for-14 with four doubles, three homers, and a walk during a three-game series in Lancaster, raising his June line to .400/.488/.771. Nunez has hit well off righties (.278/.340/.510) and lefties (.303/.379/.579), and profiles as a solid major league regular.

Athletics third base prospect Renato Nunez went 4-for-5 with three doubles and a home run for High-A Stockton, raising his season line to .272/.339/.498.

Nunez has been on fire in June, hitting .361/.458/.672 with eight doubles, one triple, and three home runs. He has also increased his walk rate (from 5.1 percent in 2013 to 7.2 percent in 2014), decreased his strikeout rate (from 25.0% to 20.2%), and increased his isolated power (from .165 to .226). He is also having a better overall season while experiencing a decrease in his BABIP, from .315 to .306. His poor defense will eventually force him to first base, but for now he is firmly planting his flag as one of the top hitting prospects in the Athletics system.

Athletics prospect 3B Renato Nunez was 2-for-5 with a home run and three RBI on Thursday for High-A Stockton.

Nunez, 20, is now riding a six-game hitting streak during which he's batting .364 with two home runs, eight runs scored and five RBI. The right-handed hitter posted a solid .725 OPS with 19 bombs last year (as a teenage) in his full-season debut at Low-A Beloit, but also a far-less-solid 136/29 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 128 games. It's been a similar story this season for Nunez, who owns an .806 OPS with six home runs and a 30/8 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 27 games.

Athletics signed 3B Renato Nunez, LHP Anderson Mata and LHP Jose Torres.

All three are international free agents out of Venezuela. As mentioned earlier, Nunez is getting a $2.2 million bonus that will be one of the highest given to a 16-year-old this year. Fanhouse's Frankie Pillere ranked Nunez second and Mata 10th among Venezuelan prospects available this summer.

A source told Baseball America that the A's have landed 16-year-old third baseman Renato Nunez for a $2.2 million signing bonus.

Nunez was regarded as one of the top 16-year-olds available this summer. It's the second big splash the A's have made in the international market lately, as they gave right-hander Michael Ynoa a record bonus two years ago.
