It's the fourth time he's been benched since July 25, as Gyorko is hitting just .176/.241/.243 since the All-Star break. Stephen Piscotty is also on the bench, as Greg Garcia and Jose Martinez are getting starts.

Cardinals manager Mike Matheny said that Jedd Gyorko didn't start Thursday for the second time in three games due to fatigue.

Gyorko has batted only .159 with a .500 OPS since the All-Star break. He's on pace this season to play more than he ever has at the big league level, so it's not a surprise that he's getting a little worn down. Gyorko will be back in the lineup Friday. "You could just tell he’s beat down a little bit (by) how they’re going about his work," Matheny said. "He’s a guy who wants to grind just like every other guy we have on this team. He’s also appreciative of the fact that we see he’s a little beat down and if we can find a way to buy him a little time to get right, I think, we’re going to end up seeing benefits down the road."
