Jedd Gyorko went 2-for-5 with a two-run homer Sunday in the Cardinals' 9-0 pounding of the Phillies.
Gyorko doubled and scored in the Cardinals' three-run fourth inning and then went deep to right-center off Phillies reliever Frank Herrmann in the Cardinals' four-run eighth. The 27-year-old infielder now has 20 home runs on the season, in just 272 at-bats. That is a homer for every 13.6 at-bats. Another terrific under-the-radar acquisition for Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak. Aug 21 - 5:04 PM

Jedd Gyorko slugged a game-tying two-run homer off Jeanmar Gomez in the ninth inning Friday against the Phillies.

The Cardinals went on to win the game after Randal Grichuk doubled home Jhonny Peralta in the top of the 11th and Alex Reyes shut down the Phillies in the bottom of the frame for his first career save. Gyorko went 2-for-5 on the night and now has 19 homers on the year. 12 of them have come in his last 29 games.
Aug 20 - 12:26 AM

Jedd Gyorko hit a three-run home run in Tuesday's win over the Astros.

Gyorko took former Cardinals reliever Pat Neshek deep in the sixth inning to extend the Cardinals' lead. The home run was the 18th of the year for Gyorko, who now has 40 RBI. He's already surpassed his home run total from last year, and Gyorko has a shot at his rookie total of 23 dingers if things break right for him over the final month and a half. The 27-year-old is hitting .248/.312/.488 overall.
Aug 17 - 1:26 AM

Jedd Gyorko homered in both halves of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Mets.

He also homered in both halves of a doubleheader last Wednesday versus the Padres and he now has seven home runs in his last nine games. Gyorko probably isn't going to finish this season with an .800-plus OPS -- it's at .814 right now -- but he does have pretty good power and he's probably going to keep playing regularly for St. Louis. There's reason to grab him and start him in deeper mixed leagues.
Jul 26 - 10:57 PM

Jedd Gyorko continued to terrorize his former club, blasting a pair of home runs to power the Cardinals to a 3-2 victory in the nightcap of Wednesday's doubleheader.

Gyorko tagged Padres starter Paul Clemens for a solo homer in the third inning then added on a two-run blast in the fifth. He also left the yard in the first game of Wednesday's twin-bill. Oh, and he went 3-for-3 and homered in the first game of the series on Monday as well. Gyorko finished the nightcap 3-for-4 and is now 8-for-10 with four homers and six RBI in the first three games of the four-game series.
Jul 20 - 11:34 PM

Jedd Gyorko tormented his former team Monday, going 3-for-3 with a solo home run in a win over the Padres.

Gyorko followed Randal Grichuk's longball in the seventh inning with a dinger of his own. He also drew a walk, reaching base in all four trips to the plate. With a .252/.311/.429 batting line and eight home runs, Gyorko has given the Cardinals pretty much what they should've expected from him as a part-time player.
Jul 19 - 12:13 AM

Jedd Gyorko will start at first base Monday versus the Royals.

Gyorko will get the call with left-hander Danny Duffy on the hill for Kansas City. Matt Holliday will serve as the designated hitter while Brandon Moss gets a start in left field. Gyorko is batting eighth Monday.
Jun 27 - 5:38 PM

Jedd Gyorko went 2-for-4 with a three-run home run in a win over the Brewers on Tuesday.

The homer, off Brewers reliever David Goforth in the eighth inning, was Gyorko's sixth of the season. The infielder has been utilized in a part-time role this season, batting .245/.325/.451 with those six homers, 16 RBI and 15 runs scored through 38 games.
May 31 - 11:47 PM

Jedd Gyorko went 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBI in Saturday's win over the Diamondbacks.

Gyorko hit a two-run shot in the second inning to get the scoring started, his fifth home run of the year. He added an RBI single in the seventh inning to cap the scoring. Gyorko has seen plenty of playing time in the early going with Kolten Wong struggling, as he's appeared at second base 23 times compared to just four times as a shortstop. The 27-year-old is hitting .225/.296/.427 with 13 RBI and 12 runs scored on the season.
May 21 - 7:04 PM

Jedd Gyorko went 3-for-5 with his third homer of the year, a three-run shot that contributed to Saturday's rout of the Padres.

Gyorko continues to see sporadic playing time across the infield. He was floundering under the Mendoza Line prior to Saturday's game, but his three-hit performance has him now hitting .242/.306/.515 on the year. He appeared to be in line for regular at-bats at shortstop. Aledmys Diaz has hit the cover off the baseball to grab a hold of that position, though, leaving Gyorko in his wake.
Apr 24 - 12:49 AM

Jedd Gyorko singled and belted a two-run homer in Tuesday's loss to the Pirates.

Gyorko's blast in the fourth inning turned a one-run deficit into a one-run lead, although the Cardinals coughed up the lead an inning later. He drew the start at second base against the left-hander, something that should happen often this season. However, he's also going to play a bunch at shortstop while Jhonny Peralta (thumb) and Ruben Tejada (quad) are out.
Apr 5 - 10:58 PM

Jedd Gyorko went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts on Friday and is hitting just .200 in 30 at-bats this spring.

That's .200 with one double, no homers and no walks. How Gyorko fields at shortstop is more important that how he swings this month, but the Cardinals should probably have Aledmys Diaz penciled in as Jhonny Peralta's replacement right now.
Mar 18 - 3:55 PM

Jedd Gyorko went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI against the Mets on Monday.

With Jhonny Peralta potentially out for a long while, the Cardinals need to evaluate whether it'll be worth starting Gyorko at shortstop in the early going or if it'd make more sense to go with someone rangier, either Aledmys Diaz or Greg Garcia. Gyorko can help his case with the offense, but the defense is going to matter more.
Mar 7 - 4:49 PM

FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports that the Cardinals are taking on $26 million on Jedd Gyorko's contract.

Gyorko is owed $32 million through 2019 and his contract includes a $13 million club option or a $1 million buyout for 2020, so the Padres are covering about $7 million. The Cardinals will also save $6.225 million by parting with Jon Jay in the deal.

Cardinals acquired INF Jedd Gyorko and cash considerations from the Padres for OF Jon Jay.

No word yet on how much cash the Padres will send in the deal, but Gyorko is guaranteed $33 million through 2019 (this includes a $1 million buyout on an option for 2020). He's only making $4 million in 2016, so perhaps the Cardinals could explore trading him next winter if he has a bounceback year. Gyorko figures to serve as a utility player in St. Louis and possibly as a platoon partner for Kolten Wong.
