Nationals pitching prospect Sammy Solis has been shut down with left elbow discomfort.
Solis has missed most of the season with a back injury and was blasted for eight earned runs over 3 1/3 innings in his lone start for Double-A Harrisburg last week. The former second-round pick underwent Tommy John surgery in 2012, but it's not clear at this point how serious his current elbow injury is. Jun 3 - 6:59 PM

Sammy Solis (back) felt good while throwing a bullpen session Thursday.

Solis hasn't pitched in a game since March 2 because of back spasms, but it sounds like he's close to returning. The 25-year-old made it back from Tommy John surgery last season and posted a 3.32 ERA and 43/19 K/BB ratio over 59 2/3 innings between rookie ball and High-A Potomac. He could work his way to the majors before long.

Nationals purchased the contract of LHP Sammy Solis from High-A Potomac.

Solis made 12 starts with High-A this year, posting a 3.43 ERA in 57 2/3 innings. Solis, 25, is now protected during December's Rule 5 Draft. Nationals general manager Mike Rizzo has already said Solis has a chance to pitch in relief with the big club next season.

Nationals general manager Mike Rizzo suggested Wednesday that prospect left-hander Sammy Solis could pitch out of the bullpen in the majors next season.

The Cardinals have used young pitchers in relief roles to great success, so the Nationals haven't ruled out a similar path for Solis. The 24-year-old made it back from Tommy John surgery this past season and posted a 3.32 ERA and 43/19 K/BB ratio over 59 2/3 innings between rookie ball and High-A Potomac. Viewed as a future starter, he's currently pitching in the Arizona Fall League.

Nationals prospect left-hander Sammy Solis has been activated from the disabled list with High-A Potomac.

Solis has been rehabbing from shoulder soreness over the past month and struck out three over two scoreless innings on July 5 with the Nationals' Gulf Coast League affiliate. After missing all of last season due to Tommy John surgery, the 24-year-old southpaw has been limited to just five starts in the minors in 2013.

Nationals prospect Sammy Solis is currently dealing with "general shoulder soreness."

The injury isn't a major concern, but Solis missed all of 2012 due to Tommy John surgery. The 24-year-old left hander has a 3.38 ERA over four starts with the Nationals' High-A affiliate.

Nationals' prospect left-hander Sammy Solis (elbow) will undergo Tommy John surgery next Tuesday.

As expected. The surgery will be performed in Los Angeles by Dr. Lewis Yocum, who was also the surgeon for Stephen Strasburg and Jordan Zimmermann. Solis, who was recently ranked as the Nationals' No. 8 prospect by Baseball America, will be shelved until the 2013 season.

Nationals prospect Sammy Solis (elbow) has been shut down and is likely to undergo Tommy John surgery.

Solis first began experiencing discomfort in his throwing elbow while pitching in the Arizona Fall League and was unable to get through a routine side session this week. The 23-year-old left-hander posted a 3.26 ERA and 93/23 K/BB ratio in 96 2/3 innings last season between two levels of Single-A and was recently ranked as the organization's No. 8 prospect by Baseball America.

Nationals general manager Mike Rizzo said Thursday that prospect left-hander Sammy Solis (elbow) was examined by multiple doctors over the offseason and that "there was a little difference of opinions."

Solis was shut down during the Arizona Fall League due to elbow soreness, so the Nationals are curious to see how he'll respond as he builds up his workload at accelerated minor-league camp. "We had him rest over the winter. We shut him down," said Rizzo. "And now we'll ramp him up and see what happens. So there's a little question." The 23-year-old left-hander posted a 3.26 ERA and 93/23 K/BB ratio over 96 2/3 innings last season between Class A Hagerstown and High-A Potomac and was recently ranked as the organization's No. 8 prospect by Baseball America.

Nationals general manager Mike Rizzo said Friday that prospect left-hander Sammy Solis (elbow) has not yet visited Dr. Lewis Yocum due to strep throat.

Solis experienced discomfort in his elbow while pitching in the Arizona Fall League. He is expected to be examined once he's recovered from his current illness. The 23-year-old left-hander posted a 3.26 ERA and 93/23 K/BB ratio over 96 2/3 innings this season between Class A Hagerstown and High-A Potomac and was recently ranked as the organization's No. 8 prospect by Baseball America.

Nationals pitching prospect Sammy Solis has visited with orthopedic surgeon Dr. Lewis Yocum and team physician Dr. Wiemi Douoguih after experiencing elbow discomfort in the Arizona Fall League.

"We don’t have a final diagnosis for him but we’re concerned enough to send him to two doctors," Nationals general manager Mike Rizzo said. The GM isn't ready to talk about Tommy John surgery yet, but he didn't rule it out, either. "We’re not going to Tommy John yet," Rizzo added. "That’s way down the road — but there is concern, yes. Whenever you have elbow soreness, it’s concerning." Solis, who was recently ranked as the No. 8 prospect in the Nationals system by Baseball America, is likely ticketed for Double-A to start the year if he doesn't have to get operated on.
