Rockies optioned INF Charlie Culberson to Triple-A Albuquerque.

Culberson's chances of breaking camp with the big club were somewhat hampered by a bulging disk in his back. He missed a stretch from March 8 to March 25. Even had he been healthy, he was a long-shot to make the Opening Day roster. He'll serve as organizational depth for the Rockies.

Charlie Culberson hasn’t played since March 8 due to a back injury.

"We know how difficult backs can be, so I'm sure he'll have a different routine every day than he's had in the past just to stay out in front of this thing," Rockies manager Walt Weiss said. It’s not clear when Culberson might be ready to return to game action. He’s not expected to make the Opening Day roster.

Culberson has had a terrible season at the plate, entering Thursday night with a .526 OPS. But his fifth-inning blast off of Alfredo Simon helped pad the Rockies' lead to 7-2 at the time. It was only his third home run of the season, and he still has a meager .189/.244/.311 slash line with 18 RBI in 178 plate appearances.
