The move clears the way for Freddie Freeman to be activated from the disabled list. Carpenter was called up over the weekend and didn't make an appearance during his brief stint with the big club.

According to ESPN Boston, David Carpenter wasn't going to make the Blue Jays' 40-man roster.

Carpenter was acquired in the John Farrell trade, but GM Alex Anthopoulos made it clear that the he had no future with the Jays, and would have been designated for assignment. WEEI.com's Alex Speier believes Carpenter will be facing a similar roster situation with the Red Sox.

It's the second time in three months that Carpenter has been dealt, as he was traded from the Astros to the Blue Jays before the deadline in a nine-player deal. A hard thrower, the 27-year-old holds a 5.70 ERA and 60/29 K/BB ratio over 60 major league innings.

Well, that was fast. Carpenter was just called up Friday, but gave up four runs on three hits and a walk over two-thirds of an inning against the Yankees. He figures to get another shot later this season.

Acquired in the J.A. Happ deal, Carpenter allowed two runs while striking out 14 over 9 1/3 innings for Vegas to earn the promotion. He put up a 6.07 ERA over 29 2/3 innings earlier this season for the Astros but did strike out 27.

Carpenter has been up and down for the Astros this season, posting a 6.07 ERA over 30 appearances. The converted catcher throws pretty hard, though, and could eventually be a suitable middle reliever.
