Diamondbacks recalled LHP Joe Paterson from Triple-A Reno.

Paterson was a key piece of the big league bullpen in 2011 but was a mess in his short stint with them this year. He'll try to win a spot in the pen next spring.

Diamondbacks optioned LHP Joe Paterson to Triple-A Reno.

Paterson has surrendered 15 hits and 11 runs in just 2 2/3 innings this season. The Snakes will hope for better out of left-hander Mike Zagurski, who was recalled from Triple-A Reno in a corresponding roster move.

John Gambadoro of 620 KTAR expects lefty reliever Joe Paterson to be demoted to Triple-A Reno.

He's hardly going out on a limb there, as Paterson has allowed 11 runs on 15 hits and three walks over just 2 2/3 innings this season, resulting in a stunningly bad 37.13 ERA. Gambadoro also expects left-hander Mike Zagurski to take his place on the roster.

After entering with a 9-0 lead in the ninth, Joe Paterson gave up five runs without retiring a batter Monday against the Phillies.

Shane Victorino and Carlos Ruiz hit back-to-back homers off him. Paterson did nice work as a lefty specialist for the Diamondbacks as a Rule 5 pick last year, but this is the fourth time in six appearances this season that he's been charged with at least one run. Overall, he's allowed a whopping 15 hits in 2 2/3 innings. A demotion to Triple-A is likely in the cards.

After Juan Gutierrez and David Hernandez failed to get the job done, Rule 5 pick Joe Paterson picked up his first major league save Friday against the Twins.

The Diamondbacks were up 8-4 at the start of the ninth, so J.J. Putz's unavailability tonight didn't seem like a big issue. However, Gutierrez gave up a homer and a single before being replaced with one out and Hernandez fell apart, giving up an RBI double and then walking three straight batters to make it 8-7. Paterson took over then, fanned Jason Kubel and then got Justin Morneau to ground out to end it. He's yet to give up a run in 10 innings for the Diamondbacks.

Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic hears that left-hander Joe Paterson has made the Diamondbacks' Opening Day roster.

Paterson, a Rule 5 pick, has posted a 5.40 ERA and 12/4 K/BB ratio over 10 innings this spring. If he makes the team, the final spot in the bullpen will likely come down to Esmerling Vasquez or Kam Mickolio.

Diamondbacks selected LHP Joe Paterson from the Giants with the third pick in the Rule 5 Draft.

Paterson, 24, posted a 3.48 ERA and 49/24 K/BB ratio over 54 1/3 innings with Triple-A Fresno this past season. Diamondbacks general manager Kevin Towers knows how to build a bullpen, so it looks like he'll try to him as a left-handed specialist.
