Royals released LHP Joe Paterson.

Royals manager Ned Yost said Thursday that Joe Paterson is in the hunt for an Opening Day bullpen job.

"He's got that funky side delivery. He's on the radar," Yost said. Paterson was signed to a minor league contract back in November after posting a 2.95 ERA and 33/19 K/BB ratio in 42 2/3 innings last season for the Diamondbacks' Triple-A affiliate. The 28-year-old left-hander owns a 6.25 ERA in 40 1/3 career innings at the major league level, so expectations should be tempered.

John Gambadoro of 620 KTAR expects lefty reliever Joe Paterson to be demoted to Triple-A Reno.

He's hardly going out on a limb there, as Paterson has allowed 11 runs on 15 hits and three walks over just 2 2/3 innings this season, resulting in a stunningly bad 37.13 ERA. Gambadoro also expects left-hander Mike Zagurski to take his place on the roster.

After entering with a 9-0 lead in the ninth, Joe Paterson gave up five runs without retiring a batter Monday against the Phillies.

Shane Victorino and Carlos Ruiz hit back-to-back homers off him. Paterson did nice work as a lefty specialist for the Diamondbacks as a Rule 5 pick last year, but this is the fourth time in six appearances this season that he's been charged with at least one run. Overall, he's allowed a whopping 15 hits in 2 2/3 innings. A demotion to Triple-A is likely in the cards.
