Phillies recalled RHP Justin De Fratus from Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

De Fratus has dealt with elbow issues for much of the season but has pitched well at Triple-A when healthy, putting up a 2.49 ERA and 22/3 K/BB ratio over 21 2/3 innings. The Phillies will use him in the middle innings.

De Fratus, out since April with a flexor pronator strain in his right elbow, tossed a scoreless inning in a rehab appearance with High-A Clearwater on Monday. He'll serve as relief depth at Triple-A now that he's back to full health.

It's a procedural move to clear a spot on the 40-man roster, as De Fratus has been out all year with a flexor pronator strain in his right elbow and isn't expected back until mid-June, at the earliest.

De Fratus began the year on the DL with what was called a sprained elbow at the time, but the soreness remained and now the Phillies have a more specific diagnosis. It sounds like he won't be an option for the Phils until at least mid-June.

The 24-year-old right-hander could be in the mix for a bullpen spot this spring after posting a 2.99 ERA and 99/25 K/BB ratio over 75 1/3 innings last season between Double-A Reading and Triple-A Lehigh Valley and a 2.25 ERA over five appearances at the major league level. He was ranked as the organization's No. 7 prospect by Baseball America over the winter.

He'll be checked out by the team doctor before hopefully resuming his throwing before long. At this point, the Phillies don't seem to be concerned that it's a serious ailment. If healthy, De Fratus will compete for a spot in the bullpen after posting a 2.99 ERA and 99/25 K/BB ratio over 75 1/3 innings this season between Double- and Triple-A and a 2.25 ERA in five games with the Phils.
