Giants manager Bruce Bochy said Cory Gearrin and Tony Watson will serve as the team's primary setup men ahead of closer Hunter Strickland.
The Giants have had to reshuffle their bullpen in the wake of Mark Melancon's forearm injury. Sam Dyson has closing experience but Bochy is opting to use him in lower-leverage situations coming off a dismal spring in the Cactus League. For now, Gearrin should be San Francisco's go-to arm in the eighth with Watson getting most of his work against left-handers. Mar 29 - 6:35 PM

Cory Gearrin (finger) threw on Thursday without any issues and is nearing a return to game action.

The right-hander has been sidelined for the past week due to a cracked nail on his right middle finger, but it's improving daily. He'll have no problem being ready in time for Opening Day where he'll function in a middle relief role for the Giants.

Giants and RHP Cory Gearrin avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $1.05 million contract.

The 30-year-old right-hander appeared in 56 games out of the Giants' bullpen in 2016, compiling a 4.28 ERA, 1.16 WHIP and 45/14 K/BB ratio across 48 1/3 innings. Gearrin earns a nice raise over the $550,000 that he made in 2016.

Giants activated RHP Cory Gearrin from the 15-day disabled list.

He'll absorb the roster spot left by injured starter Matt Cain (back). Gearrin missed about six weeks with a strained shoulder. He was working as the Giants' setup man before his injury but now that role belongs to Derek Law.

Cory Gearrin (shoulder) will make another rehab appearance with Triple-A Sacramento.

Gearrin is back to full health after his right shoulder strain, but the Giants need to make room for him on the active roster. The plan calls for him to pitch again on Tuesday in Triple-A, so look for him to rejoin the Giants shortly after that. Gearrin had a 3.89 ERA and 29/12 K/BB ratio over 37 innings prior to hitting the DL in early July.

Giants placed RHP Cory Gearrin on the 15-day disabled list with a right shoulder strain.

This is something of a precautionary move, as manager Bruce Bochy said that the team expects him to be able to return to action after the All-Star break. In 37 innings of relief work this season, the 30-year-old right-hander holds a 3.89 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and 29/12 K/BB ratio.

Braves released RHP Cory Gearrin.

Gearrin posted a 4.28 ERA with 68 strikeouts over 69 1/3 innings from 2011-13 before missing the 2014 season following Tommy John surgery. It's possible the Braves will re-sign him to a minor league contract as he continues his recovery, though there's been no indication to this point that that will happen.

Braves activated RHP Cory Gearrin from the 60-day disabled list.

Gearrin was one of a plethora of Braves hurlers who were forced to undergo Tommy John surgery last season. The 28-year-old is expected to return to the Braves bullpen at some point during the first two months of the 2015 season.

Cory Gearrin will undergo Tommy John elbow surgery.

The right-hander made the decision Tuesday after getting a second opinion on the partial ligament tear in his right elbow. He's already on the 60-day disabled list and will be sidelined through early 2015.

Cory Gearrin was diagnosed Saturday with a partial ligament tear in his right elbow.

Gearrin is likely to need Tommy John reconstructive elbow surgery, but he'll get a second opinion before anything becomes official. The Braves have already placed the right-hander on the 60-day disabled list.

Braves transferred RHP Cory Gearrin from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day disabled list.

The move was made to clear room on the 40-man roster for Pedro Beato. Gearrin's injury has been described as a sprained elbow, but there's a good chance he'll wind up having Tommy John surgery. Even in a best-case scenario, the Braves obviously won't have him for a couple months.

Braves placed RHP Cory Gearrin on the 15-day disabled list with a right elbow injury.

Braves general manager Frank Wren said Saturday that Cory Gearrin's elbow injury has shown "ligament involvement." Of course, Wren used the same terminology when talking about Kris Medlen, who required Tommy John surgery this spring. Gearrin will get a second opinion from Dr. James Andrews next week, but it sounds like he could be headed for season-ending surgery.
