Matt Szczur finished 2-for-2 with a solo home run and a walk in Saturday's game against the Giants.
Szczur welcomed Madison Bumgarner back from the 10-day disabled list with a solo shot in the third inning. After managing just two hits over 27 at-bats across 24 games from June 10-July 8, Szczur has posted back-to-back multi-hit games. Jul 16 - 2:38 AM

Matt Szczur is not in the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Brewers.

Looks like it is just a regular day off for Szczur. Allen Cordoba will play left field and is hitting eighth in his place.
May 17 - 8:39 PM

Matt Szczur doubled and walked in three plate appearances as the Padres' No. 8 hitter Tuesday.

Szczur is 6-for-22 with a homer in seven games for his new team. He's not likely to ever be more than an NL option, but he could move up in the Padres' order if he's merely solid. The Padres might as well leave Manuel Margot in the leadoff spot for the long haul and see what materializes, but Szczur would probably be the better option if the Padres were trying to win right now.
May 17 - 1:11 AM

Matt Szczur slugged a solo homer Friday against the White Sox.

Szczur made the start in center field and batted leadoff with Manuel Margot getting the day off. The 27-year-old is 5-for-13 (.385) with his new club and finds himself in a much better place for playing time in San Diego. He’s worth owning in NL-only formats.
May 13 - 12:52 AM

Matt Szczur went 3-for-4 with an RBI in Wednesday's loss to the Rangers.

He delivered an RBI double in the second inning. This was his second game with the Padres since he was acquired in a trade with the Cubs on Monday. He has a .292 batting average in 24 at-bats on the year and could see increased playing time with his new club.
May 11 - 12:42 AM

Padres acquired OF Matt Szczur from the Cubs in exchange for RHP Justin Hancock.

Szczur had been designated for assignment. The 27-year-old could play pretty regularly against lefties in left field for the Padres, but he's a career .243/.295/.370 hitter and has never run much in the majors following big stolen base totals in the minors. It's doubtful he'll produce much fantasy value unless the Padres let him loose on the bases. Szczur is worth a speculative NL-only play.
May 8 - 8:54 PM

Cubs designated OF Matt Szczur for assignment.

The Cubs needed to call up a fresh arm and Szczur was out of options. The 27-year-old has played sparingly this year, collecting only four hits in 19 at-bats for the first-place Cubs. He could attract interest on waivers.
May 6 - 7:19 PM

Matt Szczur has made the Cubs' Opening Day roster.

Cubs president Theo Epstein said Wednesday that Tommy La Stella will also break camp with the team. Szczur was out of options this spring and would have almost certainly have been scooped up on waivers, so it makes sense that he's sticking around.
Mar 29 - 1:04 PM

FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports that Matt Szczur is among the trade candidates the Braves are considering as they look for an extra outfielder.

Szczur is out of options this spring, so Rosenthal notes that the Cubs are expected to keep him rather than lose him on waivers, but the Braves might be able to make an attractive offer. The 27-year-old hits from the right side of the plate and has experience at all three outfield positions.
Mar 21 - 2:33 PM

Matt Szczur went 3-for-4 with a two-run homer and two runs scored in Monday’s 9-6 win over the Rockies in Cactus League action.

Szczur had a pair of singles (one of them of the bunt variety) before going deep in the Cubs’ sixth-run eighth inning. The 27-year-old did a respectable job off the Cubs’ bench last season, batting .259/.312/.400 with five homers and 24 RBI over 107 games while seeing time at all three outfield spots. Monday’s performance helps his case for a spot on the Opening Day roster. It’s worth noting that the Cape May native is out of options this spring.
Mar 20 - 8:08 PM

Matt Szczur finished 2-for-2 with an RBI single in the Cubs' 1-1 tie with the Indians on Sunday.

The fourth-inning RBI single provided the only run of the game for the Cubs. Szczur also singled in the third. He's trying to win a spot as a backup outfielder this spring, but it's going to be a tall hill to climb for the 27-year-old former top prospect.
Feb 26 - 5:56 PM

Mark Gonzales of the Chicago Tribune hears that the Brewers were close to trading for Matt Szczur at the deadline before talks dissolved.

The late-season emergence of Keon Broxton and impending arrival of Lewis Brinson could remove the Brewers from the equation when it comes to Szczur. However, the Cubs have a surplus of outfielders and could revisit trading the 27-year-old. Szczur is a career .245/.297/.376 hitter over 346 plate appearances and is under team control through 2021.

Matt Szczur singled and smacked a two-run homer in Friday's win over the Pirates.

It didn't take the Cubs long to get to Francisco Liriano, as Szczur followed a Dexter Fowler infield single with a blast to left-center. Szczur has been quite the role player this season for the Cubbies, sporting a .333/.375/.533 with three longballs.

Cubs activated OF Matt Szczur from the 15-day disabled list.

He missed a little over two weeks with a strained hamstring. It's good timing with Jason Heyward nursing a rib injury. Szczur is available for Saturday's game against the Giants but isn't in the starting lineup.

Matt Szczur (hamstring) will begin a rehab assignment with Double-A Tennessee on Thursday.

Szczur was placed on the disabled list at the beginning of May with a right hamstring strain. Prior to the injury, he was slashing a robust .367/.441/.600 with two homers and 10 RBI across 21 contests (30 at-bats). Should his rehab assignment progress according to plan, he could rejoin the Cubs next week.
