The Cubs are planning to promote outfielder Matt Szczur from Triple-A Iowa on Sunday.

Dan Straily is making a spot start Saturday night versus the Mets and will then be optioned to the minors, clearing a roster spot for Szczur. The former top outfield prospect is doubtful to hold fantasy relevance.

Szczur batted .267/.360/.390 with four homers and 42 steals between High- and Double-A this season. The speedster really struggled upon his promotion to Double-A and will likely return there in 2013.

Cubs optioned OF Matt Szczur and INF Junior Lake to Double-A Tennessee; optioned 3B Josh Vitters, LHPs Jeff Beliveau, John Gaub and RHP Alberto Cabrera to Triple-A Iowa.

The Cubs also reassigned catcher Jason Jaramillo to minor league camp. Szczur has emerged as one of the Cubs' most intriguing position prospects since giving up a career in football, batting .293/.335/.423 with 10 homers, 46 RBI, 24 stolen bases and a .758 OPS in 109 games last season between Class A Peoria and High-A Daytona. The 22-year-old center fielder was recently ranked as the game's No. 64 prospect by Baseball America.

Szczur received a $1.5 million bonus from the Cubs earlier this year to to fully commit to baseball and forego a potential career in the NFL. The 22-year-old center fielder batted .293/.335/.423 with 10 homers, 46 RBI, 24 stolen bases and a .758 OPS over 480 plate appearances this season between Class A Peoria and High-A Daytona. He was recently named the organization's No. 3 prospect by Baseball America.

Cubs agreed to terms with OF Matt Szczur.

Szczur, who was the club's fifth-round pick last June, will reportedly receive $1.5 million in order to fully commit to baseball and forego a potential career in the NFL. "We've had the great fortune to get to know Matt the last seven-plus months and are excited by his decision to devote himself completely to baseball and the Cubs," said Cubs General Manager Jim Hendry. "We've come to know Matt not only as a talented athlete but also as an exceptional person. Jim Callis of Baseball America confirmed that Cubs prospect outfielder Matt Szczur has verbally committed to a $1.5 million contract.

Tony Pauline of had the initial report. This new deal means that Szczur has decided against a potential career in the NFL. Szczur was the Cubs' fifth-round pick in the 2010 First-Year Player Draft. The 21-year-old batted .347/.414/.465 over his first 116 professional plate appearances before returning to Villanova to play football in his senior year. He was recently ranked as the No. 7 prospect in the Cubs' organization by Baseball America, though the ranking was done before the Matt Garza trade.
