Nationals signed RHP Michael Crotta to a minor league contract.

Crotta didn't pitch at all in 2012 due to elbow issues, but the Nats are giving him a shot after he hit 96 mph on the radar gun during a recent tryout. The 28-year-old right-hander had an ugly 9.28 ERA over 15 relief appearances with the Pirates in 2011.

Pirates re-signed RHP Michael Crotta to a minor league contract.

Crotta was unconditionally released earlier this week, but it was something of a technicality, as the Pirates were unable to outright him to the minors because he was on the disabled list. The 26-year-old right-hander was designated for assignment at the end of July to clear a spot on the 40-man roster for Ryan Ludwick.

Pirates released RHP Michael Crotta.

The Bucs designated Crotta for assignment in July after the 26-year-old posted a 5.40 ERA in 11 2/3 minor league innings. He drew no interest on waivers.

Pirates designated RHP Michael Crotta for assignment.

The move clears a 40-man roster spot for newly acquired outfielder Ryan Ludwick. Crota, 26, has posted a 5.40 ERA this season in the minor leagues.

Pirates activated RHP Michael Crotta from the 15-day disabled list; optioned him to Triple-A Indianapolis.

Crotta has been sidelined since the early part of May with right elbow inflammation. The 26-year-old right-hander had a 9.28 ERA over 15 appearances prior to the injury, so he'll have to earn his way back to the major leagues.

Michael Crotta (elbow) has been sent to Double-A Altoona to begin a rehab assignment.

Crotta has been out since mid-May with elbow trouble. He should be ready to rejoin the Pirates in about a week, but it's probably not a given that he'll be added to the big league roster.

Michael Crotta (elbow) has begun throwing bullpen sessions.

There's no word when he might begin a rehab assignment, but it shouldn't be long. Crotta got off to a nice start for the Pirates this season but struggled once his elbow started barking.

Pirates placed RHP Michael Crotta on the 15-day disabled list with right elbow inflammation.

That would help explain why he's been so awful recently. Crotta had a 1.93 ERA over his first six appearances, but has allowed 10 runs over his last six innings. There's no timetable for his return.

The Pirates are expected to soon send right-hander Michael Crotta to the minor leagues.

At issue is that the Pirates need to clear someone from the active roster to make room for Jose Ascanio, who is set to be activated from the disabled list. It's not like Crotta has made a strong case to stick around. The 26-year-old right-hander has a 9.28 ERA over 10 2/3 innings this season.

Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports that right-hander Michael Crotta is expected to make the Pirates' Opening Day roster.

Crotta, 26, has primarily been a starting pitcher in the minor leagues, but he has thrived as a reliever this spring, posting a 1.46 ERA and 4/2 K/BB ratio over 10 2/3 innings. His inclusion on the roster likely means that Chris Leroux will be on the outside looking in.

Michael Crotta is up to 8 1/3 scoreless innings this spring after retiring all three batters he faced Friday.

Crotta wasn't supposed to be a candidate to make the Pirates, but the Florida Atlantic product has pitched himself into the bullpen picture. He's yet to walk a batter, and he's surrendered just three hits.
