Marlins purchased the contract of LHP Duane Below from Triple-A New Orleans.
Below will take the place of Jon Rauch, who was designated for assignment following Friday's game. The 27-year-old lefty has worked exclusively as a starter in the minor leagues this season, posting a 2.68 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and 30/10 K/BB ratio over 47 innings. It's unclear what his role will be with the Marlins initially. May 17 - 10:32 PM

Marlins claimed LHP Duane Below off waivers from the Tigers; optioned him to Triple-A New Orleans.

Detroit designated Below for assignment on Wednesday to clear a roster spot for Jose Valverde. The 27-year-old was sporting a cool 2.10 ERA, 0.74 WHIP and 15/4 K/BB ratio in 25 2/3 innings this season with the Tigers' Triple-A affiliate in Toledo. He's a nice catch for the Fish.

Tigers designated LHP Duane Below for assignment.

The move clears a spot for Jose Valverde on the 40-man roster. Below has a 2.10 ERA and 15/4 K/BB ratio over four starts this season with Triple-A Toledo. He could draw interest on waivers.

Tigers optioned LHP Duane Below, RHP Jose Ortega and C Bryan Holaday to Triple-A Toledo; optioned INF Hernan Perez to Double-A Erie.

Below was in the mix for a roster spot this spring as a long reliever, but he really struggled during Grapefruit League play, allowing 11 runs on 14 hits and three walks over eight innings. He'll have to earn his way back into the Tigers' good graces.

Tigers optioned LHP Duane Below to Triple-A Toledo.

Below gets the boot after giving up three runs on three hits and a walk over an inning Monday night against the Twins. The southpaw now has a 3.88 ERA and 29/8 K/BB ratio over 46 1/3 innings this season. He figures to return in September.

Duane Below pitched fairly well in a brief outing against the Twins on Tuesday evening, surrendering five runs (one earned) on five hits over 2 2/3 innings.

As has often been the case with the Tigers this season, the brutal defense behind Below played a major role in the outcome of the game. Ramon Santiago booted a simple ground ball in the third inning which extended the frame, allowing Josh Willingham to come to the plate and bash a three-run homer. Below did manage to strike out three without issuing a walk, but he's unlikely to see another start and is mostly irrelevant in fantasy leagues.

Tigers manager Jim Leyland announced that Duane Below will start Monday against the Royals.

Leyland said over the weekend that Below was not under consideration for a future start, but things changed after Adam Wilk was sent down to the minors this week. Below has a perfect 9/0 K/BB ratio over 12 scoreless innings this year and will hold down a spot in the rotation until Doug Fister returns from the DL, so he's worth owning in AL-only leagues.

Tigers manager Jim Leyland said Sunday that Duane Below is not under consideration for a future start.

Below looked impressive in the first half of Saturday's doubleheader against the Rangers, allowing only four singles across six scoreless innings. "Because he's done good in the bullpen, everybody wants to know if I'm going to start him right now," said Leyland. "And the answer to that is no -- emphatically no right now."

Duane Below tossed six scoreless innings in relief of Rick Porcello against the Rangers on Saturday.

A life-saver in the first game of a day-night doubleheader. Below gave up four hits (all of them singles) while striking out four and walking none. He has yet to allow a run in 10 innings this season.

Tigers recalled LHP Duane Below from Triple-A Toledo.

Below will replace the injured Luis Marte in the Tigers' bullpen, serving as a long reliever. Below lost out on Detroit's fifth-starter job to Drew Smyly, but he'll be a member of the Opening Day roster nonetheless.

Tigers optioned LHP Duane Below, RHP Brayan Villarreal to Triple-A Toledo.

Below had a horrible spring, losing out to Drew Smyly for the final spot in the rotation. He'll serve as depth at Triple-A. Villarreal was terrific in camp, posting a 1.59 ERA over nine appearances, but it wasn't enough to earn an Opening Day roster spot.

Duane Below failed to impress in his latest start, allowing three runs and walking four in 3 1/3 innings Friday against the Orioles.

With a 5.17 ERA and a 9/10 K/BB ratio in 15 2/3 innings, Below hasn't capitalized on his chance to claim the opening in Detroit's rotation. He might get it anyway, but it would be by default.

Duane Below had his longest outing of the spring Sunday, allowing one run in 3 2/3 innings against the Yankees.

It didn't look like Below was being taken very seriously as a fifth starter candidate when he pitched two innings last Sunday and just one in his last appearance Wednesday, but he got stretched out a bit today. The 26-year-old wouldn't project as much of a starter for the Tigers, but he might be a safer choice than Andrew Oliver or Drew Smyly.

Duane Below struggled in Tuesday's start against the Nationals, allowing one run on four hits and three walks over 2 2/3 innings.

Below was yanked after throwing 38 out of 63 pitches for strikes. He's still in the mix for the fifth starter job, but Andy Oliver and Drew Smyly have emerged as the favorites now that now that Jacob Turner has been shut down due to a dead arm.

Lynn Henning of the Detroit News considers Duane Below the favorite to win the final spot in the Tigers rotation.

Henning has Below in the driver's seat, followed by Adam Wilk, Jacob Turner and Drew Smyly. He's simply basing it on age, though, as Below is the elder statesman of the group at 26. We're doubtful that's the main criteria Detroit will use, and Below might have the least amount of upside of anyone in the group. Turner, who most assumed was the front-runner for job, is certainly the most talented, but he's just 20 and the Tigers could choose to give him some more seasoning.
