Padres designated INF Luis Sardinas for assignment.
Sardinas lost out on the starting shortstop job this spring but stuck on in a utility role. He hit just .163/.226/.163 in 53 plate appearances with the Padres. There's a decent chance he passes through waivers unclaimed and continues to provide organizational depth. May 21 - 7:45 PM

Padres manager Andy Green said Friday that Luis Sardinas is now competing for a utility role on the club's Opening Day roster.

He entered spring training as the likely starting shortstop, but has been surpassed by veteran Erick Aybar. He entered Friday's game as a defensive replacement in the outfield where he'll continue to flash his versatility over the final week-plus of spring play.

Luis Sardinas went 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI single in Thursday's loss to the Dodgers.

Sardinas hit an RBI single in the fourth inning to boost the Padres to a 2-0 advantage. Said advantage would not hold for the long, as the Dodgers would seven runs over the next three innings. For the season as a whole, the 23-year-old shortstop is hitting .265/.339/.398 with two homers and six RBI over 76 at-bats.

Luis Sardinas went 2-for-4 with a homer, a walk, four RBI, and two runs scored in Friday’s loss to the Marlins.

Sardinas just missed a grand slam in the fourth inning, but he settled for a bases-clearing double. He didn’t miss in his next at-bat, as he took Mike Dunn deep for a solo blast in the sixth inning. The 23-year-old was recently acquired from the Mariners and should get a chance to show what he can do at shortstop down the stretch, though we aren't expecting much in the way of fantasy value.

Padres recalled INF Luis Sardinas from Triple-A El Paso.

He'll replace the injured Jabari Blash (finger) on the active roster. Sardinas was just acquired from the Mariners last week and owns a lowly .218/.257/.268 batting line in the majors. He figures to serve in a utility infielder role.

Padres acquired INF Luis Sardinas from the Mariners for cash.

Sardinas was designated for assignment by Seattle last week after batting just .181/.203/.264 over 77 plate appearances. The 23-year-old utility infielder is a .218/.257/.268 career hitter in the major leagues, but he could very well open the 2017 season as the Padres' starting shortstop if they don't make an upgrade this winter.

Mariners designated INF Luis Sardinas for assignment.

Sardinas had managed a paltry .181/.203/.264 triple-slash over 75 at-bats prior to being optioned down on Sunday. Now that he has been designated for assignment, he figures to pass through waivers unclaimed.

Mariners optioned INF Luis Sardinas to Triple-A Tacoma.

Sardinas was no longer needed with Leonys Martin returning from the disabled list, so he'll head back to Triple-A where he'll provide organizational depth.

Mariners recalled INF Luis Sardinas from Triple-A Tacoma.

Chris Taylor has been optioned to Triple-A as the corresponding roster move. Earlier this season, the 23-year-old Sardinas saw 26 at-bats with the M's and managed just four hits in that space. While he could see his share of playing time until Ketel Marte (thumb) is ready to return, Sardinas has yet to find the sort of major league success that would make him a palatable fantasy option.

Luis Sardinas went 2-for-3 with a pair of two-run doubles as the Mariners topped the Padres 6-5 in Cactus League play on Thursday.

The Padres led 1-0 through five innings, but Sardinas helped fuel the comeback effort. Interestingly enough, Sardinas tallied just four RBI in 105 plate appearances all of last season. The 22-year-old was acquired from the Brewers back in November and will compete with Chris Taylor for a backup infielder job this spring.

Mariners acquired 2B Luis Sardinas from the Brewers for OF Ramon Flores.

Sardinas, 22, has the bat of a utility infielder. In 97 at-bats with the Brewers in 2015, he hit a paltry .196/.240/.216. He initially came to the Brew Crew as part of the Yovani Gallardo trade to the Rangers in January. The Brewers have been shedding pieces throughout the week. Veteran first baseman Adam Lind's still with the team, but his name's surfaced in rumors as well.
