Ryan Verdugo was annihilated in his first big league start Tuesday, allowing six earned runs over 1 2/3 innings Tuesday to the Mariners.

The 25-year-old left-hander was called up as an emergency starter earlier in the day, and odds are that he'll have to wait a while before getting another chance with the Royals. Verdugo, the last remnant of the Melky Cabrera trade after Jonathan Sanchez was cut Tuesday, surrendered eight hits, two walks and a homer against one of MLB's worst offenses.

The Royals were forced to use Everett Teaford on Monday, so Verdugo would likely start Tuesday against the Mariners. The 25-year-old southpaw has a 3.58 ERA and 72/44 K/BB ratio in 88 innings at the Triple-A level this season. He can be ignored in fantasy leagues.

He was sent down to make room for Clint Robinson, who will join the active roster Friday in Pittsburgh. Verdugo was called up from the minors earlier this week, but didn't make an appearance during his brief time with the big club.

Because the Royals have off-days on Thursday and Monday, they can shrink the rotation to four members for the time being. As such, Kansas City plans to use Verdugo out of the bullpen. The 24-year-old southpaw, acquired along with Jonathan Sanchez from the Giants in the Melky Cabrera deal, was 3-1 with a 3.61 ERA in 11 starts for Omaha this season.

Verdugo was acquired earlier this month from the Giants in the Melky Cabrera deal. The 24-year-old posted a 4.35 ERA and 1.37 WHIP in 25 starts this season but also struck out over a batter per inning. He's now protected from the Rule 5 draft.

Verdugo, 24, posted an underwhelming 4.35 ERA and 1.37 WHIP in 25 starts this season at Double-A Richmond. He possesses swing-and-miss stuff and had great numbers in the lower ranks of the Giants' minor league system, but he'll have to find a way to put it all together before he can be considered a potential major league starter.
