Bogaerts took a pitch off the hand July 6 at Tampa Bay and has been dealing with discomfort ever since. Boston is hopeful it's just a day-to-day situation, but an MRI is scheduled. Deven Marrero will start at shortstop and bat eighth on Tuesday night against the Blue Jays.

Xander Bogaerts has been moved down to the No. 6 spot in the Red Sox' order Tuesday against the Blue Jays.

It's the first time since May 5 that he's hit lower than third. Bogaerts is hitting just .154/.244/.231 so far in July.

Xander Bogaerts went 0-for-4 on Monday and is just 6-for-39 with two runs scored in July.

Bogaerts wasn't great in June, either, and his average has declined from .339 on May 30 to .296 now. He could probably use more time off than he's gotten, something that was clearly the case last year, too.

Xander Bogaerts is not in the Red Sox' lineup for the second game of Sunday's doubleheader against the Yankees.

It looks to be nothing more than a breather for Bogaerts. Tzu-Wei Lin is starting in his place at shortstop and batting ninth against Masahiro Tanaka and the Yankees on Sunday night.

Xander Bogaerts went 1-for-3 and drew a walk in a loss to the Rays on Saturday.

His single was one of only three base knocks his teammates could generate against Rays' pitching on the afternoon. The Red Sox are hopeful that Xander Bogaerts (hand) will be able to return on Saturday or Sunday.

Bogaerts was held out of Friday's lineup after being hit in the right hand by a pitch on Thursday. X-rays came back negative and there's "a lot of improvement," but he felt worse than expected on Friday. "It's still tough to hold a bat and throw a ball," said Bogaerts. "I knew coming in today it would be tough to play. Hopefully tomorrow it's much better compared to today." Consider him day-to-day.

Red Sox fans (and fantasy owners) can all let out a collective sigh of relief. Xander's .308 average ranks 12th in the American League.
