Ian Krol (shoulder) is scheduled to begin a rehab assignment Friday with Low-A West Michigan.

Krol will pitch there Friday and Sunday before being activated on Tuesday if all goes well. The reliever has been on the disabled list since June 21 because of left shoulder inflammation.

Krol had his first bullpen session Saturday, but feels that he had improved command on Monday. The 23-year-old landed on the disabled list last week with left shoulder inflammation, but he should be back around the All-Star break if he continues to make progress.

Krol said it's something he usually deals with each year, and he's already feeling better. "I've had the same thing [in the past]," Krol said before Monday's game. "It's not pain, just aggravating." It's not clear whether Krol will be available Monday, but it sounds like this isn't a long-term concern.

The 22-year-old southpaw has solid numbers on the season, registering a 3.24 ERA, 1.16 WHIP and 20/7 K/BB ratio over 25 innings with the Nationals, but had struggled over his last eight appearances before being sent down on August 20. He'll work in a middle relief role.

Ian Krol has tossed 9 2/3 scoreless innings while boasting a 12/1 K/BB ratio in nine appearances since being called up by the Nationals.

Krol made the full-time move to relief this season and has really seen his stuff play up, as he's sitting comfortably in the mid-90s now. The Nats entered the season with left-handed relief issues, but it appears they've found diamonds in the rough in Krol and Fernando Abad, who holds a 1.42 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and 14/1 K/BB ratio over 12 2/3 frames.

Krol was sporting a 0.69 ERA and 29/7 K/BB ratio in 26 innings at the Double-A level. The 22-year-old left-hander was acquired in this winter's three-team Michael Morse trade and will operate as a middle reliever.
