Leonys Martin's early-season struggles continued in Sunday's loss to the Royals as he went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts.
The hitless afternoon drops Martin down to an abysmal .176/.262/.378 on the season. If he doesn't turn things around soon, he could be in jeopardy of losing most of his playing time in the Mariners' outfield. May 1 - 8:21 PM

Leonys Martin is batting leadoff on Wednesday.

Nori Aoki is out with a sore shin, so Martin will handle the top spot in the Mariners' batting order against Rangers right-hander Colby Lewis. It's an intriguing DFS matchup for the speedy 28-year-old outfielder. Aoki should return to action on Friday.

Leonys Martin slugged a walk-off homer as the Mariners beat the White Sox 5-4 in 10 innings on Friday.

The Mariners tied the game in the bottom of the ninth on a two-run homer from Nelson Cruz. Martin is batting just .190 (8-for-42) this spring, though he is 6-for-6 in stolen base attempts. The 28-year-old fell out of favor with the Rangers last season while batting just .219/.264/.313 over 95 games, but the Mariners bought low over the winter in hopes of a rebound. He figures to be at the bottom of the order, but there’s some sneaky speed potential here in fantasy leagues.
Mar 25 - 7:38 PM

Leonys Martin hit a three-run homer in Wednesday's win over the Giants.

As was the rage on Wednesday, Leonys teed off on Jeff Samardzija. In this case, he launched a three-run homer in the first inning to jump start the Mariners offense. They would manage another two homers against Samardzija before his day was done. Martin also collected a single on the day to finish 2-for-3. Last season, he played in just 95 games due to injury. When he did manage to take the field, the 28-year-old slashed .219/.264/.313. Until he can re-prove his health (he had hand surgery in August), it is difficult to project what kind of numbers he might post with the M's.

Mariners and OF Leonys Martin avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $4.15 million contract.

The M's acquired Martin earlier this offseason in a deal with the Rangers. The 27-year-old owns a .255/.305/.361 career line with 84 steals in five career seasons. He'll be the starting center fielder when camp opens.
Jan 14 - 6:09 PM

Mariners acquired OF Leonys Martin and RHP Anthony Bass from the Rangers for RHP Tom Wilhelmsen, OF James Jones, and a player to be named later.

Seattle's new general manager Jerry Dipoto is following in Jack Z's footsteps here, dipping into the bullpen in order to upgrade elsewhere. This seems like a pretty good move, though. That Martin is no better of a hitter now than the day he entered the league has made him a big disappointment, but his glove in center field remains well above average and he still might take a step forward with the change of scenery. Even if he doesn't, he'll probably be an acceptable regular against right-handers. He does need a platoonmate, whether it's Franklin Gutierrez (currently slated to platoon with Seth Smith in left) or someone else.

According to Yahoo's Jeff Passan, the Rangers have traded Leonys Martin to the Mariners in a deal also involving Tom Wilhelmsen and James Jones.

MLB.com's T.R. Sullivan had Jones's inclusion. The Rangers have been looking to trade Martin since midseason, and there was no chance he'd still be with the team on Opening Day. The Mariners certainly found the price here more palatable than they would have in a deal for Boston's Jackie Bradley Jr.

Rangers general manager Jon Daniels said Wednesday that the team "100 percent" plans to tender a contract to Leonys Martin.

While the Rangers won't non-tender Martin, he figures to be a potential trade candidate this offseason. The 27-year-old lost his starting job to Delino DeShields, Jr. in 2015 while batting just .219/.264/.313 over 95 games. After being left off the postseason roster, he declined to report to the Rangers' instructional league team in Arizona. Still, he would make sense as a buy-low somewhere. Martin will be arbitration-eligible for the first time this winter.

Rangers general manager Jon Daniels said Tuesday that the club has drawn trade interest in Leonys Martin from teams "looking to buy low."

Delino DeShields usurped Martin in center field this season and Martin drew the ire of the team when he failed to show up to the instructional league in Arizona as asked. Thus, it's not terribly surprising that clubs anticipate the Rangers are perhaps willing to move him. Martin hit an ugly .219/.264/.313 in 2015 and is just a career .255/.305/.361 batter, but he's a very good defensive center fielder.

Leonys Martin, apparently pouting over his exclusion from the Rangers' postseason roster, did not report to the Instructional League in Arizona as he had been told.

The Rangers sent several players there to continue playing and remain fresh in the event that they were needed at some point during the playoffs due to injury. The outfielder has had a tumultuous season and may now be at risk of being non-tendered this winter.

Rangers recalled OF Leonys Martin from Triple-A Round Rock.

Martin had surgery to remove the hamate bone from his right hand late last month but has made a quick return. He'll take batting practice on Tuesday but will likely be used mainly as a pinch-runner and defensive substitution down the stretch.

Leonys Martin (hand) could return before the end of the season.

Martin had surgery to remove the hamate bone from his right hand on August 26 and it was thought at the time that it would end his season. However, he's been working out and the Rangers could bring him back as a defensive sub and/or pinch-runner late in the year. "He’s a definite defensive weapon," manager Jeff Banister said, "if we can get him where he’s healthy enough and able to do it."

Leonys Martin will have surgery on Wednesday to remove the hamate bone in his right hand.

Martin had been holding out hope that he could play through it, but the decision has been made to have the procedure. It will end a disappointing season for the outfielder, as he batted just .220/.265/.314 in 309 plate appearances for the Rangers and was sent to the minors earlier this month.

Leonys Martin has been diagnosed with a fractured right hamate bone.

It's been a bad month for Martin, who was optioned to Triple-A on August 4. He'll have surgery to remove the bone soon and there's a distinct chance that it will end his season. Martin has hit a disappointing .220/.265/.314 in 309 plate appearances this season.

Rangers optioned OF Leonys Martin to Triple-A Round Rock.

Martin has batted just .220/.265/.314 in 309 plate appearances this season for the Rangers, who will hope that a short demotion to the minors gets him going like it did for second baseman Rougned Odor. Delino DeShields Jr. has been serving as Texas' starting center fielder.
