Leonys Martin has elected free agency.
Rather than accept his outright assignment to Triple-A Iowa, Martin will seek a new home on the open market. He hit just .172/.232/.281 in 128 at-bats with the Cubs in 2017. He's an extremely skilled defender and has an intriguing blend of power and speed, so there should be plenty of clubs willing to give him another shot. Nov 11 - 8:35 AM

Cubs sent OF Leonys Martin outright to Triple-A Iowa.

Martin is arbitration-eligible for a final time this winter, but he'll be non-tendered and hit free agency. He batted only .172/.232/.281 over 49 games in the majors in 2017.
Nov 6 - 5:30 PM

Cubs purchased the contract of OF Leonys Martin from Triple-A Iowa.

Martin was acquired from the Mariners prior to the waiver trade deadline. He doesn't figure to play a ton down the stretch but does offer good defense and an excellent arm in center field. Martin is under team control through 2018 but is a likely non-tender candidate.

Cubs acquired outfielder Leonys Martin from the Mariners for a player to be named or cash.

The Cubs or anyone else could have acquired Martin off waivers a week ago, though that would have meant taking on just under $1 million in salary. The Cubs weren't willing to do it then, but they thought it was a good idea to trade for him now for outfield depth down the stretch. He probably won't get many starts, but he offers better defense than Jon Jay in center field and probably more offense against right-handers than Albert Almora.

Mariners sent OF Leonys Martin outright to Triple-A Tacoma.

It's the second time this season that he's been outrighted off the 40-man roster. Martin could have declared free agency, but that would've been forfeiting what remains of his $4.85 million salary for this season, so he'll remain in the organization.
Aug 25 - 2:17 PM

Mariners designated OF Leonys Martin for assignment.

Martin has batted just .174/.221/.287 across 122 plate appearances this season at the major league level. The 29-year-old outfielder passed through waivers unclaimed back in late April and will probably make it through again because of his $4.85 million salary for 2017.
Aug 23 - 1:30 PM

Leonys Martin smacked a game-winning solo home run in the top of the 10th inning in Oakland on Tuesday.

Martin's clout, just his second of the season, came off of reliever Josh Smith to cap a monster comeback for the M's. It isn't much, but Martin has hit safely in a season-high four consecutive games to raise his average from .153 to .184. He still has a ways to go before he can be trusted in most fantasy leagues.
Aug 9 - 2:49 AM

Leonys Martin drove in two runs Monday in the Mariners' defeat of the Rangers.

Martin plated Danny Valencia on a groundout in the top of the fourth inning and then added a game-tying RBI triple in the top of the sixth. The 29-year-old outfielder also had a nice game Sunday against the Mets, but he's batting just .145/.197/.242 this season at the major league level and seems doubtful to provide meaningful fantasy value down the stretch.
Jul 31 - 11:36 PM

Leonys Martin went 2-for-4 with a solo home run in Sunday's win over the Mets.

Martin cranked a solo homer off Seth Lugo in the second inning to give the Mariners an early 4-0 advantage. He had just been called up from Triple-A prior to the game. He should continue to see starting work with Mitch Haniger (face) out injured. Martin has picked up eight hits in 58 at-bats when up with the big league club this season, but was playing well in Triple-A at the time of his call back up.
Jul 30 - 7:25 PM

Mariners purchased the contract of OF Leonys Martin from Triple-A Tacoma.

Martin lost his spot on the 40-man roster back in April but made his way back on it after hitting .312/.352/.506 with 11 homers and 24 steals for Tacoma. He should see regular starts while Mitch Haniger (face) is sidelined.
Jul 30 - 1:30 PM

Mariners sent OF Leonys Martin outright to Triple-A Tacoma.

Martin was designated for assignment by Seattle earlier this week after batting .111/.172/.130 over his first 58 plate appearances. The 29-year-old outfielder passed through waivers unclaimed primarily because he's making a $4.85 million salary in 2017. He should get another shot with the Mariners at some point this summer.
Apr 27 - 3:01 PM

Mariners designated OF Leonys Martin for assignment.

Martin was off to a brutal .111/.172/.130 start this season, but it's a surprise that the Mariners are cutting him loose given his plus defense and ability to steal bases and offer a little pop when he's right. He could clear waivers given his $4.85 million salary, but Martin won't be out of a job long. The Tigers are an obvious fit. Jarrod Dyson will slide over to handle center field now, with the Mariners likely going with a combination of Guillermo Heredia, Taylor Motter and Danny Valencia in left.
Apr 23 - 1:11 PM

Leonys Martin went 0-for-4 and struck out twice in Monday's loss to the Astros.

The Mariners should be sitting either Martin or Jarrod Dyson against left-handers in favor of Guillermo Heredia, but they had both in there against Dallas Keuchel tonight, perhaps to give them the honor of starting on Opening Day. Most likely, Dyson will do more sitting versus southpaws than Martin. Both would be platoon players on an ideal roster, but there's no way the Mariners can make that work while carrying 13 pitchers.
Apr 3 - 11:11 PM

Leonys Martin contributed three hits Wednesday in the Mariners' Cactus League win over the Indians.

Not a bad day at the office for No. 12. Martin's monster afternoon included a first-inning single, a double in the third and another two-bagger in the sixth. Martin had been hitless in five spring at-bats prior to Wednesday's explosion. One of the only outfielders left after Seattle's offseason remodeling, Martin is penciled in as the Mariners' everyday center fielder.
Mar 1 - 7:16 PM

Leonys Martin arrived in Mariners' camp on Wednesday.

Martin was late to camp because he testified Tuesday in a human-trafficking trial in Miami. It shouldn't take him long to get up to speed. The 28-year-old batted .247/.306/.378 with 15 homers, 47 RBI, and 24 steals over 143 games last season. He'll function as Seattle's primary center fielder again in 2017.
