Tigers signed INF/OF Jordany Valdespin to a minor league contract.
He did not receive an invitation to big league camp in spring training. Valdespin made it up to the majors briefly with the Marlins last season but spent almost all of the year at Triple-A, hitting .293/.348/.387 with two homers and seven steals. He's merely a depth addition. Tue, Dec 22, 2015 09:59:00 PM

Marlins sent INF/OF Jordany Valdespin outright to Triple-A New Orleans.

Valdespin went hitless in four plate appearances earlier this month before being designated for assignment. He's cleared waivers and will remain in the organization.

Marlins designated INF/OF Jordany Valdespin for assignment.

Valdespin was with the club for just three days, going hitless in his four plate appearances. While he's a headcase, he's certainly talented enough that there may be other teams willing to take a chance on him on waivers.

Marlins purchased the contract of INF/OF Jordany Valdespin from Triple-A New Orleans.

He'll take the roster spot of Marcell Ozuna, who was demoted on Sunday. Valdespin, 27, was batting .287/.342/.378 with one home run, 16 RBI, and six steals over 60 games in Triple-A. He could be relevant in NL-only leagues if the at-bats are there.

Joe Frisaro of MLB.com reports that the Marlins will recall Jordany Valdespin from Triple-A New Orleans.

He'll take the spot of Marcell Ozuna on the Marlins active roster after the outfielder was demoted on Sunday. Valdespin was pulled from his game at Triple-A shortly afterwards and is heading to join the team in Boston for Tuesday's game, though the move hasn't been announced yet.

Jordany Valdespin has gone 7-for-12 in his first three games with Triple-A New Orleans.

He's hit in the leadoff spot all three games, starting in right field twice and center field once. Two of his seven hits have gone for extra bases. Valdespin hit .378 with the Marlins this spring before being sent down in late March. The 27-year-old appeared in 52 big league games as a utility player in 2014.

Marlins reassigned 2B Jordany Valdespin and C Jhonatan Solano to minor league camp.

Valdespin had a great spring, hitting .378/.425/.595 in 37 at-bats, but he was a long-shot to make the Opening Day roster barring injuries. In his major league career, he's a .218/.273/.372 hitter. As always, be weary of the apparitions of spring. Solano will be at Triple-A as depth with Jarrod Saltalamacchia and Jeff Mathis locked in as the big club's two catchers.

Jordany Valdespin had a two-run triple in his lone at-bat Tuesday as the Marlins beat the Red Sox 9-4.

With the Marlins giving more playing time to the actual candidates to make their roster, Valdespin has seen less action during the second half of the spring. He's impressed with his .379 average, three triples and eight RBI, but the Marlins still aren't going to carry him unless someone gets hurt.

Facing his former team, Jordany Valdespin went 2-for-4 with a triple and three RBI in the Marlins' 13-2 rout of the Mets on Monday.

Valdespin is 4-for-11 with two triples in three games for the Marlins. He's a long shot to make the Marlins, and even if he wins a spot, he'd just be their 25th man, with little playing time likely on the way. Still, the talent is there for him to help a club in a substantial role. He just needs to start making the most of it.

Jordany Valdespin went 2-for-5 with a triple and two runs scored as the Marlins' leadoff man Friday in a 5-3 win over the Red Sox.

Valdespin probably won't have a spot on the Marlins' Opening Day roster, but his bat remains intriguing. Last year, he had a really impressive 29/36 K/BB ratio in 265 plate appearances while hitting .270/.374/.437 in Triple-A. That's a huge improvement from, say, 2011, when he came in at 110/32 in 670 plate appearances for the Mets' Triple-A club. If he gets another chance at some point, he could surprise.

Marlins sent INF/OF Jordany Valdespin outright to Triple-A New Orleans.

The 26-year-old got a decent look at second base for the Marlins in the second half of the season, but hit just .214/.280/.347 with three homers and 10 RBI in his 98 at-bats. He's plenty talented, though a history of personal conduct issues could impact him finding another opportunity elsewhere. He'll likely have to settle for a minor league pact.

Jordany Valdespin launched a pinch-hit homer in the seventh inning of Friday's loss to the Braves, briefly knotting the score at 2-2.

Valdespin, hitting for the pitcher's spot in the lineup, took David Carpenter deep to left with the solo shot. He has seen his playing time cut considerably in recent weeks with the return of Donovan Solano, and is now hitting .228 (18-for-79) in his time with the Marlins this season.

Jordany Valdespin went 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored in a win over the Nationals on Tuesday.

The multi-hit game was Valdespin's first since being recalled 10 days ago, and he's now hitting .267/.290/.500 in those 10 games. He's started eight of those 10 games as he's been splitting time between the outfield and second base, but the 26-year-old is nothing more than a fringy NL-only option at this point.

Marlins manager Mike Redmond indicated Saturday that Jordany Valdespin will see regular playing time at second base for the time being.

Valdespin is starting at second and in the No. 2 spot in the batting order Sunday for the second time in as many games since being promoted. "Our offense has been slow and sluggish, so we are looking for a guy that can hit at the top of the order … and get us going a little bit," Redmond said. Valdespin is only a .220/.271/.378 hitter across 354 career plate appearances, but he has a little bit of pop and can run, so the 26-year-old is worth a shot in deeper leagues while he's hitting in front of Giancarlo Stanton.
