Jake Petricka left Saturday's game against the Royals with a stiff lower back.
Petricka pitched a third of an inning and gave up a walk before exiting the game. Javy Guerra entered and picked up his first save of the season. Petricka will likely be unavailable for Sunday's finale. Sep 27 - 11:13 PM

Jake Petricka got four outs against the Tigers for his 14th save Monday.

Petricka came in with two outs in the eighth and struck out J.D. Martinez to strand Victor Martinez on base. He then pitched a perfect ninth. Petricka is 14-for-16 in his ninth-inning save chances since becoming the White Sox's primary closer (he had one other cheap blown save in there after allowed an inherited runner to score in the eighth). He's not going to be assured of keeping the job next year, but he'll be the top choice among the incumbents.
Sep 22 - 9:55 PM

Jake Petricka took his fifth blown save and his fifth loss after giving up two runs in the ninth Monday against the Royals.

Petricka came in with two outs in the eighth and bailed Zach Putnam out of a jam, but he gave up two doubles to tie the game in the ninth. The Royals went on to win on a little grounder up the middle that Alexei Ramirez couldn't handle. It was ruled an infield single that allowed the runner to score all of the way from second, so the run was earned, even though that seemed rather ridiculous. We would hope this doesn't cost Petricka additional save chances down the stretch.
Sep 16 - 12:00 AM

Jake Petricka pitched a scoreless ninth for his 13th save Thursday against the A's.

Petricka also earned a save last night after a long layoff that includes a few days away to attend the birth of his child. There's a good chance he'll get Friday off now, so perhaps Zach Putnam will pick up a save opp.
Sep 11 - 5:06 PM

Jake Petricka pitched a perfect ninth for his 12th save as the White Sox beat the A's 2-1 on Wednesday.

The White Sox scored twice in the bottom of the eighth to take an unexpected lead. Petricka, who hadn't worked since Sept. 2 after missing the weekend to be with his wife and newborn, was probably going to pitch the ninth either way. He's not assured every remaining save chance for the White Sox, but he remains the best bet in their pen.
Sep 10 - 11:52 PM

Jake Petricka will not be available this weekend against the Indians, as he just welcomed a new child.

Zach Putnam will presumably handle save opportunities in Petricka's place. Petricka has a cool 2.73 ERA with 11 saves on the season for the White Sox. He should be back in the Chicago bullpen Monday against the Athletics.
Sep 6 - 5:21 PM

Jake Petricka pitched a scoreless 10th inning against the Twins to earn the save on Tuesday.

With a three-run lead, Petricka made quick work of the Twins, cutting through the bottom of the order and leadoff hitter Danny Santana to finish the game. That's now three straight scoreless appearances since a couple rocky outings in late August. If White Sox manager Robin Ventura has proven anything, it's that he's loyal to a fault with his closers, so Petricka is obviously still the guy to own in the Sox 'pen.
Sep 3 - 12:45 AM

Jacob Petricka pitched a scoreless 10th for the save as the White Sox edged the Mariners 2-1 on Saturday.

Conor Gillespie singled in Jordan Danks to give the White Sox the lead in the 10th. Petricka's ERA stands at 2.02, and he's been plenty good enough to stick in the closer's role once Zach Putnam returns from the DL. Of course, the White Sox are getting Matt Lindstrom back, too, but he doesn't belong anywhere near the closer's role.
Aug 10 - 12:37 AM

Jacob Petricka pitched a wobbly ninth on Friday, allowing three hits and a run before ultimately saving Chicago's 10-8 win over the Twins.

We'll use the term "nailed down" in very loose fashion here. It took a lot of hammering. The White Sox came into the ninth leading 10-7, only to see Petricka give up three straight singles to start the frame. To be fair, two of them were infield singles. With the bases loaded and nobody out, Petricka was able to induce Kurt Suzuki into an RBI groundout before striking out Kennys Vargas and Oswaldo Arcia to end the game. Phew. It's outings like this that make Chicago's closer situation incredibly difficult to predict.
Aug 2 - 1:28 AM

Jacob Petricka earned his fifth save of the season as the White Sox defeated the Twins on Thursday.

Petricka had no issues wrapping up the win, notching a 1-2-3 inning with two strikeouts. The White Sox aren't sure yet who to use in the closer's role, or if they should pick anyone at all. Petricka owns a 2.06 ERA with a 1.26 WHIP and 41/26 K/BB ratio.
Jul 24 - 11:15 PM

Jacob Petricka notched his fourth save with a scoreless ninth in a two-run game against the Royals on Monday.

Ronald Belisario has settled back into his eighth-inning role, but it's still unclear who will get the ninth on a nightly basis. Petricka was also given a chance to close Saturday, only to be pulled in favor of Zach Putnam after allowing two to reach with two outs. Putnam converted that one to earn his second save in two days, but he went unused tonight after also getting Sunday off. At least it seems pretty clear in light of Javy Guerra's recent struggles that the closer committee is down to Petricka and Putnam. If one of the two has a couple of bad appearances in a row, it will probably solve matters.
Jul 22 - 12:00 AM

Jake Petricka earned his third save of the season Sunday as the White Sox blanked the Mariners.

Petricka protected Chicago's 1-0 lead by recording the final six outs of the game with perfect eighth and ninth frames. This after Zach Putnam blew a save opportunity on Saturday. Petricka boasts a sharp 1.85 ERA with 36 strikeouts in 48 2/3 innings this season and is worth speculating on in most mixed fantasy leagues while the White Sox try to settle on a reliable option at closer.
Jul 7 - 1:12 PM

After coming into a 1-1 game, Jacob Petricka walked two and allowed two inherited runners to score Wednesday against the Royals.

Petricka gave up a go-ahead sac fly initially after replacing Jose Quintana in the eighth. After that, he issued the two walks, the second coming with the bases loaded. It did no damage to his ERA, but it did hurt Quintana's. It also didn't help Petricka's chances of seeing save opps in the short term.
May 21 - 11:03 PM

After Matt Lindstrom got hurt, Jacob Petricka recorded the final two outs of the game against the Royals on Monday for his first career save.

Daniel Webb might have been the choice, but he pitched three innings the previous two days. Both Petricka and Webb could be candidates for saves if Lindstrom's ankle/foot problem turns out to be significant. Petricka has a 1.85 ERA in 24 1/3 innings since his callup.
May 20 - 12:19 AM

Jake Petricka was perfect for two innings out of the pen Wednesday, striking out two against the Cubs.

Petricka has pitched 10 scoreless innings since April 25, and he has a 1.71 ERA overall since being called up on April 4. He's been a middle-relief guy thus far, but he could soon get a look in a setup role.
