Yankees designated LHP Josh Spence for assignment.

The move was made in order to clear a spot on the 40-man roster for the arrival of Kevin Youkilis. Spence, who was claimed off waivers from the Padres last month, struggled in 2012 but pitched well for San Diego in 2011.

Padres designated LHP Josh Spence for assignment.

Spence appeared in just 11 games for the Padres this year and posted an underwhelming 4.20 ERA in 31 appearances at the Triple-A level. However, some team could take a chance that he'll rebound to his 2011 form.

Padres recalled LHP Josh Spence from Triple-A Tucson.

Spence appeared in just 11 games for the Padres this year and didn't pitch that well at Triple-A, posting a 4.20 ERA over 31 contests. It was a disappointment after he fared so well in 2011.

Padres optioned LHP Josh Spence to Triple-A Tucson.

With Tim Stauffer to be activated from the disabled list on Monday, San Diego needed to open a roster spot and did so at the expense of Spence. The 24-year-old southpaw posted a 4.35 ERA and 1.74 WHIP over 11 appearances after producing a 2.73 ERA and 31 strikeouts over 29 2/3 innings in 2011. He'll be back later this season.

Padres optioned LHP Josh Spence to Triple-A Tucson.

This comes as a bit of a surprise after Spence posted a 2.73 ERA and struck out 31 batters over 29 2/3 innings upon his call-up from the minors last June. We'll surely see the 24-year-old southpaw back at the major league level at some point this year.

Padres purchased the contract of LHP Josh Spence from Double-A San Antonio.

Spence, 23, had a 1.71 ERA and 42/11 K/BB ratio over 35 relief appearances this season. The Aussie has held left-handed batters to a .130 batting average, so he has a chance to be a real weapon out of the bullpen. His promotion could open the door for Cory Luebke to move to the starting rotation at some point in the near future.
