Ryan Buchter (shoulder) has begun throwing from 75 feet.
Buchter has been out since late April with a shoulder strain, but the fact that he's able to now play long toss is a good sign towards his recovery, albeit not a guarantee that he's close to returning. If there's no soreness, there's a chance that Buchter could begin bullpen sessions next, but there's obviously still work to be done before that happens. May 24 - 2:35 PM

Athletics placed LHP Ryan Buchter on the 10-day disabled list, retroactive to April 26, with a left shoulder strain.

Buchter exited an appearance Wednesday after feeling tightness in the shoulder. That the A's are calling it a strain doesn't seem like good news, although it's unclear at this point how long he might be sidelined.

Ryan Buchter left Wednesday's game against the Rangers with shoulder stiffness.

Buchter grimaced after throwing his last pitch against Texas, and left with trainers. He'll undergo testing on his shoulder, and we should know more about the severity of the injury when the results of that become public, likely on Thursday.

Ryan Buchter (undisclosed) exited Wednesday's game against the Rangers with an apparent injury.

Buchter was clearly in pain, as he grimaced immediately after throwing the pitch, and trainers came out to check out the left-hander before he exited the contest. We'll update you with what the what the injury is and the severity of it when we have that information.

Athletics acquired LHP Ryan Buchter, 1B/OF Brandon Moss and cash from the Royals for RHPs Jesse Hahn and Heath Fillmyer.

Buchter was acquired by the Royals from the Padres in a trade last July and boasts a career 2.85 ERA across 139 relief appearances in the majors. He hasn't reached arbitration status yet and should be a nice lefty relief piece for the A's for a few years.

Royals acquired LHP Ryan Buchter from the Padres in the Trevor Cahill trade.

He has control issues, but Buchter boasts a 2.93 ERA with 125 strikeouts over 101 1/3 innings the last two seasons. He'll provide a boost to the Royals' left-handed relief corps.

Ryan Buchter allowed a run but earned the save Saturday against the Giants.

With Brandon Maurer having pitched Thursday and Friday, it was Buchter who got the call to protect a two-run lead in the ninth. Things got a little hairy after a two-out RBI single by Brandon Crawford cut the lead to one, but Buchter got Eduardo Nunez to fly out to end the threat. The 30-year-old will primarily be used as a setup man while Maurer is still around and healthy, but it's interesting to note that he's the first man up should the closer be unavailable.

According to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports, Ryan Buchter and Brad Hand have both "drawn consistent trade interest."

Both are lights out against lefties and still under team control for several more years. Per Rosenthal, the Padres are looking for top prospects in return. Given how weak the team's starting rotation is, the Padres shouldn't be in a rush to trade away two of their best relievers. Buchter and Hand combined for a 2.89 ERA over 152 1/3 innings last season.

Padres recalled LHP Ryan Buchter from Triple-A El Paso.

Buchter will return to the San Diego bullpen ahead of Thursday's matinee game against the Braves after mostly resting for 11 days in the minors. He owns a 3.00 ERA, 1.09 WHIP, and 68/27 K/BB ratio in 54 innings of relief this season at the major league level.

Padres optioned LHP Ryan Buchter to Triple-A El Paso.

Nick Noonan is also headed down to the minors. Buchter's demotion comes as a bit of a surprise. He's pitched well in a setup role this season, though he has allowed a run in each of his last two outings. Perhaps the Padres are looking to give Buchter some rest before bringing him back when the rosters expand next month.

Sources tell ESPN's Adam Rubin that the Mets are more likely to acquire a reliever than a starting pitcher at the trade deadline.

The New York Post has already listed a few possible fits including Atlanta's Chris Withrow, Oakland's John Axford and Padres relievers Ryan Buchter and Brad Hand. The Padres have been shopping almost everyone lately so dealing away Buchter and Hand before the August 1 trade deadline isn't out of the question. New York's bullpen actually carries the league's seventh-lowest ERA at 3.24, though the Mets could probably stand to add another arm behind closer Jeurys Familia and setup man Addison Reed.

Dennis Lin of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports that Ryan Buchter is "seemingly in line for the closer role" with the Padres following the trade of Fernando Rodney.

Buchter has been the club's best reliever this season aside from Rodney, posting a 2.91 ERA and 50/18 K/BB ratio over 34 innings. He was blasted for five runs over one-third of an inning on Wednesday, but evidently Lin doesn't think that would scare the Padres off from giving the southpaw a shot in the ninth. Buchter obviously needs to be owned in all fantasy leagues, but Brandon Maurer should be picked up, too, as he's likely next in line.

After taking over with the Padres down 7-3 in the ninth, Ryan Buchter was lit up for five runs in one-third of an inning by the Orioles on Wednesday.

That's a bad, bad day for the guy who is the current favorite to take over as the Padres' closer if Fernando Rodney is traded. His ERA jumped from 1.60 to 2.91. If there's any solace to be taken, it's that the Padres probably weren't winning this one anyway. They did end up scoring three runs in the bottom of the ninth, but that was against the last man in the Orioles pen, Oliver Drake, and he wouldn't have been pitching in a 7-3 game.

Padres manager Andy Green said Ryan Buchter will serve as the primary setup man for closer Fernando Rodney.

Brandon Maurer had been setting up for Rodney but the Padres no longer feel comfortable with him in that role. Maurer has seen his ERA balloon from 4.13 to 7.11 over his last three appearances. Buchter has pitched to a respectable 2.16 ERA over 27 outings this year. He's worth owning in leagues where holds are counted.

With Fernando Rodney unavailable, Ryan Buchter worked a scoreless ninth inning against the Brewers on Thursday for his first save.

Buchter is a lefty but this was just a case of Padres manager Andy Green feeling most confident in him, as Buchter retired Jonathan Lucroy, Chris Carter and Hernan Perez to end the game. Buchter earned the honor after posting a 0.54 ERA, 0.96 WHIP and 23/8 K/BB ratio over 16 2/3 innings this season. Rodney, who had worked both ends of Wednesday's doubleheader, will be the closer on most days, but if he ever misses extended time it's worth remembering that the 29-year-old Buchter has his manager's confidence.
