Alex Dickerson has been diagnosed with a disc protrusion in his back and will be sidelined for the next 3-4 weeks.
Dickerson won't need surgery, but he can obviously now be ruled out for the first couple weeks of the 2017 regular season. He entered spring training with good odds of claiming a share of the Padres' starting left field job. Travis Jankowski and Jabari Blash will likely work in a platoon there to open the year. Padres manager Andy Green said Wednesday that Alex Dickerson (back) will see a spine specialist.

Dickerson recently experienced a setback with his back injury, so the Padres want to see if there's anything different they can do to get him on track. His chances of being ready for Opening Day are looking increasingly doubtful.

Alex Dickerson (back) could make his Cactus League debut on Saturday.

Dickerson tweaked his back during the first week of spring training, but he went through a full practice Thursday morning in Padres camp. He'll probably DH in his spring debut before the Friars clear him for outfield play. Dickerson is trying to win the starting left field job in San Diego.

Alex Dickerson (back) took batting practice and shagged flyballs Tuesday.

It's the first time he's gone through the majority of the Padres' workouts since he tweaked his back during the first weekend of camp. Dickerson entered spring training as possibly the favorite to start in left field, but he'll need to get into game action soon.

Alex Dickerson (back) could make his Cactus League debut later this week.

Dickerson is almost fully recovered from a stiff back that's kept him on the shelf for a week. He took the day off Monday but is nearly game-ready and the time he's missed shouldn't be that big of a deal.
Feb 27 - 4:32 PM

Padres manager Andy Green said of Alex Dickerson's (back) recovery that "it’s been a little bit of a slow process for him."

Dickerson has been sidelined for the last week with back stiffness. Green said that the outfielder remains day-to-day but added that Dickerson won't be ready to play in games for at least a few more days. Dickerson is hoping to be the Padres' Opening Day left fielder.

Feb 21 - 9:39 PM

Alex Dickerson was held out of workouts on Monday because of back stiffness.

The Padres aren't concerned that it might be a long-term thing. Dickerson is competing for a starting corner outfield job this spring after batting .257/.333/.455 with 10 homers in 285 plate appearances for San Diego last season.
Feb 20 - 4:11 PM

Alex Dickerson went 1-for-1 with a solo home run in Thursday's loss to the Giants.

Dickerson came off the bench to swat a solo home in the eighth inning. It drew the Padres to within 2-1, but neither team would score again after that home run. For the season as a whole, the 26-year-old Dickerson holds a .258/.327/.466 triple-slash to pair with his 10 homers and 35 RBI over 236 at-bats.

Alex Dickerson hit his ninth homer to account for the Padres' lone run Friday against the Rockies.

Dickerson is making his case for a starting spot in next year's outfield by hitting .262/.326/.475 in 202 at-bats to date. Still, his upside is pretty limited, particularly since he's not a very good outfielder (he began his pro career as a first baseman). The Padres could do worse in left field, but they could also do better.
