Dickerson had opted to go the rest and rehab route to treat the sprained UCL in his left elbow, but to date hasn't experienced any improvement so he'll throw in the towel and go under the knife. It's unclear just how much time he stands to miss, but he's likely looking at his second straight lost season.

That's the plan, at least, but if the rehab doesn't take, Dickerson will still probably require the surgery. Either way, he's out for at least the first month of the regular season and maybe longer. It's a bad beat for the 27-year-old, who missed the entire 2017 season due to back issues.

Dickerson was slowed last week by renewed discomfort in his back, but it clearly wasn't a major issue. The outfielder should soon be cleared for a minor league rehab assignment. He was placed on the disabled list at the end of spring training with a bulging disc.

Dickerson is making his way back from a disc protrusion in his back. He might be ready for a minor-league rehab assignment around June 10 barring any setbacks. "He's feeling good and pushing really hard to be cleared to go play," manager Andy Green said.
