Padres outfield prospect Alex Dickerson could be done for the season after having surgery on his left heel.

Dickerson suffered a severely sprained ankle during warm-ups prior to a mid-March spring training game, and he evidently must have had some ligament damage in the heel. It's possible he could return late in the year. It's a blow for the 23-year-old outfielder, as he could have threatened for a call-up this season.

Padres prospect Alex Dickerson traveled back to San Diego to have his ankle examined.

Dickerson, who suffered the injury over the weekend, was diagnosed with a severe left ankle sprain earlier this week. He will likely open the 2014 regular season on the minor league disabled list. The 23-year-old outfielder hit .288/.337/.494 with 17 home runs, 68 RBI, and 10 stolen bases in 126 games last summer for the Pirates' Double-A affiliate.

Padres prospect outfielder Alex Dickerson (ankle) was scheduled to undergo an MRI on Monday.

Dickerson sprained his left ankle during a warm-up drill on Saturday. While he was in considerable pain initially, he said it had lessened by Monday. Still, we won't know anything for sure until test results come back. Acquired from the Pirates over the winter, the 23-year-old hit .288/.337/.494 with 17 home runs, 68 RBI, and 10 stolen bases in 126 games last season at the Double-A level.

Alex Dickerson suffered a sprained ankle during warmups on Saturday.

The Padres outfielder was able to walk off the field under his own power, but the injury could sideline him for a couple of days. He's still battling for a reserve spot on the Padres Opening Day roster.

Alex Dickerson connected on a solo homer against Matt Garza, helping to lead the Padres to a 6-2 win over the Brewers in Cactus League play on Friday.

The 23-year-old, who was acquired from the Pirates over the offseason, got the start at first base in this one, but has also seen time in the outfield. After a stellar 2013 season at Double-A Altoona where he slashed .288/.337/.494 with 17 homers, 68 RBI and 10 stolen bases, he could catch on as a utility player on the Padres Opening Day roster with a strong effort this spring.

Padres general manager Josh Byrnes indicated that Alex Dickerson will be an outfielder with his new organization.

Dickerson, who was swapped from the Pirates to the Padres on Monday in exchange for RHP Miles Mikolas and OF Jaff Decker, has played first base in the past. "We think he can really hit," Byrnes said. "We spent a lot of time on him in the [2011] Draft. I know he's worked hard on his defense, which was a question coming out of college." Dickerson, the Pirates' No. 13-ranked prospect according to MLB.com, was named the Eastern League Rookie of the Year in 2013 after hitting .288 with 17 home runs and 68 RBI in 126 games at Double-A Altoona.
